I've been thinking...Will David and his buddies give their band a new name in the future? Maybe the second CD they put out will feature them collectively under a new name. I'm not sure if this has been a topic starter. Forgive me if it has.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they will. I have no evidence to back it up though.

I’ve known a few of them for a long time and few of them for a short time, and I couldn’t imagine playing music with anyone else right now. So, that’s good. As far as the band names, we think we have one.

D: I can’t tell you yet. It’s been killing me, I want to. We’re just going for the legalities to make sure some tanning salon somewhere isn’t named the same thing. But hopefully soon.

Say, thanks for the post. Now I'm really curious about the name. I guess it's safe to say that The Midwest Kings is out since Dave commented that they have to check to see if the new name has a history. He would already know about MWK. Come on Dave! Don't keep us waiting! We all like to be teased. Tease me!

David has said that they'll announce the band name sometime this summer (some were hoping it would have been as this second leg kicked off) once the "legal department" looked into it (the joke about making sure there isn't a tanning salon with the name.) He had once said that they had a hard time coming up with a name because everything they kept thinking of was already taken. I think there are also legalities and contracts to work out with the band members as to representation and management and the record company. David has been strongly hinting about a second album recently and, presumably, that one will be under "David Cook and the [Whatevers]" rather than another David Cook solo project. Right now the guys all technically work for David, but I think he may want them all on a more even playing field, to be more like partners rather than employees.

I'm sure there is a lot of legal stuff to work out so what happened to Carly's band doesn't happen to them -- last week Carly's new band announced that they were calling themselves "The Fallen" and then got a cease and desist order from a Philadelphia band already called The Fallen. So Carly's band had to quickly change their name, website, marketing and everything to "We Are The Fallen" which delayed their big promotion of giving their new .mp3 single away free.

WOW! You know so much. I, too, noticed that Dave has been mentioning a second album. I didn't realize that "the band" worked for him. How'd you like to have a boss like David? I say bring it on!

Hmmm... would be interesting to see what the other four guys would bring to the table as far as songwriting is concerned. To me it'll always be about Dave, because band members come and go all the time (not just "touring band members" but also permanent ones), so I'll follow Dave's career wherever it may go regardless of the other 4, but I'm looking forward to hearing the next album and hoping it's more about Dave and the boys and less about all those fancy songwriters 19 management put on the job for the self-titled album.
Would be nice to get a "band feel" from the next album.

i cant wait to find out the name of the band ! yayyyy ! new album talk ! im happy that people are now looking at the band as partners insted of...i dont know. hha. but its not just the band anymore. its more like partners, close friends, or even brothers.

cant wait to see what those 5 guys come up with. i have a joke with me and my classmates about naming his band. i was discussing the issue of band naming and how hard it is to thik of a name that isnt taken. and i go "even a name like **pause**...uhh WINDOW STREAK is probbably taken. now watch that be the name of the band. haha jkkkkk but that would be funny (:

I'm glad the band is getting some attention. Not EVERYTHING is all about David, all the time and I think some people are starting to see the light in that. I think it's great that they're working on a name. Hopefully it won't be "David Cook and the ____" Something a little more original..... haha Window Streak...... nice.

Andy: Well, the band name, just like much of the music in MWK, comes from the incredibly strange mind of Neal Tiemann.
Neal: I made up the name because we needed something to explain the acronym, MWK.
Justin: Neal came up with it while we were at a studio in Sapulpa as the goofy name for a side project, and the ongoing joke just stuck.

I didn't mean anything nasty...I just thought that it would be cool to have such a wonderful person/musician for a boss.

Interesting, I never knew that MWK could, perhaps, actually stand for something other than "Midwest Kings." Now I'm curious! In the meantime, what I've heard is that the "new" band name supposedly has something to do with a MWK song, some line or phrase or title. Also, people have surmised that it would have to be "David Cook and the [Whatevers]" just because of the marketing/promotional appeal of the "David Cook" name, or "brand" as they say in marketing terms. So, like Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, it'll be "David Cook and the [Whatevers]."

I think the guys have absolutely gelled into a cohesive group, and to me it's not just David and 4 guys who play behind him, but all 5 guys together as 1 band.

Couldn't agree more with the last paragraph of your post, willow. And question about the 'David Cook and the (whatevers)' with recognition and marketing... Where have these people heard this? Is this confirmed facts or just personal opinions? Same with the MWK phrase idea... Just trying to get things straight here.
I personally don't think that Dave's name would be required to be in the name... Because people shouldn't buy their music for who he is, they should buy it because it's just good music. I don't think they're going to have too much of a problem with making amazing music or getting their name out there.
But if it is true that 'David Cook' has to be in the name, fine by me. It doesn't really matter after all; it's all about the music!

Everything I've heard is just spec and rumor from the various boards and chats I lurk in, and that's why I specifically said "surmise." I have just the slightest, tiniest pinch of a background in marketing, so I get where people were spec'ing about keeping "David Cook" in the name because of all the work RCA/19 have done in "branding" David Cook. You have to remember that the entire world is not as knowledgeable about David as we are and calling the band just the "Whatevers" would undo a year and a half of promotion and marketing. It's all about business and building name recognition.

I have a possibility.....just a random assumption, but an idea nonetheless.......

At Red White and Boom, before he did Souvenir, he metioned that we'll be hearing a lot more of this. If you go back to my recap of that show, I mentioned this and wondered if he was putting it on the next album. Maybe that'll be the band's name too?

Like you guys, I really don't care what they call themselves as long as they stick together and keep giving us the best music known to man.

I am also SUPER excited about future David/Neal collaborations that I'm sure will happen... those two brilliant songwriting minds together?? I get excited just THINKING about the wonderful songs that could come from that.

However, whether they release a second album just as whatever their band name is, or as David Cook and the 'Whatevers', I just know that I'll be sad to not be able to just go to 'David Cook' on my iPod and play everything in there. But that's what playlists are fooorrrr.

So, if the MWK song title/lyric rumor is true, and the band name is going to come from that, anybody have any ideas on what it's going to be? I think that if they dropped David Cook from the band title (which, as most of you guys have pointed out, is completely unlikely, too big of a name, marketing, etc) 'Anodyne' would be a great band name. One of my favorite MWK songs everrrr.

omg i would love if they named the band 'anodyne' or 'till i'm blue'. although i like the song anodyne more than till im blue i think till im blue would be a better name. but now im just rambling haha
