HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID COOK!

In my upcoming book, I talk about the change that happened from the original Idol era stretching from Clarkson to Underwood, to the second Idol era, (Season 6 to the present) dominated by mostly male mostly rockers. On the Mount Idolmore of this era, there are three names who changed everything: Chris Daughtry, David Cook and Adam Lambert.

No one on Earth saw David Cook as a contender for the crown when he first stepped into the Idoldome. And even on the day of the finale, hardly a person believed that he could beat David Archuleta, that a rocker could win the Idol crown.

David Cook also impressed many as the smartest, saaviest of Idol contenders, very strategically planning his moves. There were many who questioned when he arrived whether a bar rocker could take the contest seriously enough to win it, but Cook’s competitive nature came through and he took it very seriously indeed. The following year, Adam Lambert, in talking with me, citing Cook’s wisdom as one of his roadmaps.

But along the way, Cook had provided some of the most memorable moments in Idol History. His performance on Mariah Carey night, combined with the presence of his brother was about as explosive a moment as I can remember. And since winning the crown, Cook has gone on to impress all as someone very serious about his music, his first album producing a couple songs that even two years later seem to be constantly played.

And on top of that, he was a terrific guy to talk to, incredibly thoughtful and considerate whenever we chatted and has a great brother, Andrew who has become a stalwart of Idoldom and twitter superstar in his own right.

So happy birthday David Cook, a worthy champion in the highest tradition.
