i will start with AI songs and progress to AH...never in my life have i been so affected by lyrics.. is it just because i was ready -- or davids song choices just affected me due to the type of songs he chose? we'll never know really... but the affect on me has been profound for sure....
marlowe here, baring my soul as usual guys.... hello you know just what to say, you know just what to do... opened my eyes to the fact that my husband always says the right thing and means it. made me realize that all men are not like that. all i really need is you after all these years, after all these tears between us, still i couldnt find someone half as right as you, and each time i start to think, what it is i really need, then i must conclude, all i really need is you... again makes me appreciate that my hub and i are very different people, but it really comes down just one thing despite all that - L.O.V.E. always be my baby you'll always be a part of me, i am part of you indefinitely makes me think of my disabled sister who i feel highly connected to, despite the fact that she cant walk and can only speak a few words. but the heart doesnt need words to talk and hers has a lot to say. and i have listened. it is like our hearts talk without the words. innocent gena's losing faith in what she knows, needs a surgery and a new nose, every calorie's a war, and she wishes she was a dancer and she never heard of cancer, she wishes God would give her some answers and make her feel beautiful i really identified with gena here. i remember feeling low, i remember losing hope, i remember all the feelings and the day they stopped. i remember the day years ago when the feelings stop and hope returned. this line helped me remember the past and to be greatful for the present and the future. we are all innocent like david i agree that we all are good people deep down. i thought everyone thought that. but the more people i meet lately, i realize that alot of people assume people are bad until proven wrong. i assume people are good until i am proven wrong. one day, you'll have to let it go, you'll stand up on your own. this one has significance just this week. i have let some things go and it has changed my outlook on life and other people. that is all for now. this has drained me emotionally more than i thought it would. ( i know this is posted under AH and i am getting to that record too!) |

I have alot to say here my dear Marlowe. I will get my thoughts together on all of it and post later. Hubby is getting ready to leave for Canada!! ~melissa I KNEW YOU WOULD. YOU ACTUALLY INSPRIED ME TO START THIS. i know david didnt choose I still havent found what i'm looking for,.... but.... I have climbed highest mountains I have run through the fields I have run, I have crawled I have scaled these city walls These city walls But I still havent found What I’m looking for I have kissed honey lips Felt the healing fingertips It burned like fire This burning desire I have spoke with the tongue of angels I have held the hand of a devil It was warm in the night I was cold as a stone this one, reminds me of my healing journey and the fact that i am not 100% healed yet, but more functional than i have ever been. there is still a little more emotional healing i must do before finally getting there (hence... i still havent found what i'm looking for)... *************************************************************************** The world i know has our conscious shown has the sweet breeze blown has all kindness gone hope still lingers on sit alone in NYC and i dont know why are we listening to hymns of offering have we the eyes to see love is gathering all the words i've been reading now start the act of bleeding into one so i look upon high and i step to the edge to see my world below and i laugh at myself as the tears roll down cuz its the world i know to me these words fascinatelly describe the fact that our world is in a state of change, people have not been as kind or helpful as they were in other generations. we have been self absorbed and materialistic. i beilieve that is all changing and the consciousness of the planet is changing, and we are all growing as people, and as a species, our brains are changing.... in other words - "love is gathering" are we REALLY listening to what we are being told? have we the eyes to see these changes are necessary? that otherwise the world and society is going to hell in a handbasket? and this line..all the words i've been reading now start the act of bleeding into one... really applies to me as the books on self help and spirituality that i have been reading are all coming together and leading me to the same place in my healing process... and these words... so i look upon high and i step to the edge to see my world below and i laugh at myself as the tears roll down cuz its the world i know anyone that has been through a transformation can relate... i have been healing since april and it has caused me to really look back at my past life, and take a step back and look at my present life as well. and often when i do that the tears roll down in gratitude of healing provided to me WOW THAT SONG SAYS SOOO OMUCH |

"Has all the kindness gone?
Hope still lingers on..." When David sang those lines it really hit home for me because I was having trouble believing in my life that love could overcome hate and give me something new to cling on to and believe in. So after he sang those words I found that song being my hope for a while when everything else seemed wrong and misplaced.. Owe it to David for being able to sing every song beautiful in a different, touching way that helps us realize something new and life-chaning. Wow. thats all I have to say. I will come back with more later..right now im too tired to think of other lyrics that have inspired me greatly. |

OK you said any artist --
Land of Hope and Dreams by Bruce Springsteen faith will be rewarded I used this a lot to try to calm the panic in the days before Tropical Storm Hannah when we were planning our Bridgeport road trip, nervously watching the weather and trying to decide whether or not to cancel the trip or whether it was worth giving it a shot. We did go, and faith was rewarded, we had a clear (albeit muggy) early afternoon and a visit with David at the barricades. Monsoon held off until the trip home. |

Well, all of his music past and present really has a big effect on me personally, but one of the ones that really struck a chord with me most was 'Therapy' from his Axium days. I could identify with the lyrics as a whole, and it really helped me to overcome a great deal.
Therapy I feel so lonely No one to console me Here as I sit amidst the wind Eyes to see me Not even I believe me And my thoughts are on the mend The sun plays tricks on my eyes Trying now to make my way through all the lies Put on my face to fool you all But I don't have that far left to fall It's therapy for me To wear my heart on my sleeve It's therapy for me It's therapy for me But you can't see this And you've never been this Questioned everything you are I'll come back stronger Can't help but remember That it's easy when it's done being hard The sun plays tricks on my eyes Tryng now to make my way through all the empty lies Put on my face to fool you all But I don't have that far left to fall It's therapy for me To wear my heart on my sleeve It's therapy for me, yeah It's therapy for me, yeah Come back stronger Can't help but remember That it's easy when it's done being hard And, even though it was only a cover, Innocent always makes me feel better when I listen to it. |

OK. So a person's ability to write lyrics is what makes me follow him/her, which is why I didn't really get "into" David until I heard is original music. At which point, my mind was suitably blown.
Personal stuff here. I've had a really crappy 2008. This is probably, in part, why David's music was able to strike such a chord in me. Anyway, there was a period of time in which I was listening to Clean Break literally my entire hour drive to work. It was the only way I could make it there for a few days this spring. The whole song in general, but these lines specifically: "Bleeding, forming scars in vain/I'm finding no shelter from a never ending rain/I'm finding I don't know you I don't know you/But I - I'll pay you back in kind" Another one is Therapy. I remember the first time I actually listened to the words. In the car, coming home from work, the song came on my Ipod, and I was blown away by it all. So much so that the light I was stopped at, waiting in traffic while I was focuisng on the words for the first time, always reminds me of Therapy now. Ha. Anyway, the snippet that's my favorite is: "It's easy when it's done being hard." I love that. So simple. David's talent as a lyricist, for me, lies in first, his use of semi-esoteric words, and his evocative phrases. The meaning of his lyrics isn't entirely clear, so they are open to a personal interpretation. Despite this vagueness as to specificity of meaning, the sentiment behind his words is blatant. He really has a gift for capturing emotion in words and with his voice alone (I know this thread isn't about his voice, but the way the man's voice can portray an emotional crescendo is really amazing. Think Creep or Clean Break, the way he builds the songs up and then just hits a vocal zenith. In Creep he actually does this twice). Oh, and even though all his lyrics are amazing, I'm going to add this one more: "No blood can be seen yet it still can be shed/know these words that you speak are like nails in my head." From Unlucky. Gorgeous imagery from an amazing song. Lately I've been on a MWK binge. Holy sh*t, is Neal an amazing songwriter. Mind blowing lyrics. When I first really listened to "One True Thing" I was blown away. Here's the whole song: "I could say that I'm alright / I think that's what you want to hear / but everytime I step out of this door / I just want to reappear / somewhere else / a place I made up in my head / before this world / started taking pieces away / taking pieces away / just one breath that I can breathe / just one honest untouched scene / just one taste of rust to show the bars that cage are bending / just one melody that I can really sing / after all you've taken, can you give me this / One true thing / I can sway my feelings for / yet another wasted day / never once will I be broken / I will lock my heart away / somewhere else / a key I hid inside my head / before this world / started making its escape / i'm planning my escape / 3AM, I wake myself / from what I hope is a dream / too many times I've been left with nothing I'm down to one" And all the MWK songs are gems like that one. As talented as David is, don't forget/underestimate about the amazing ability of the people he's surrounded himself with. BTW, marlowe, thanks for starting all these awesome threads over here! |

I have so many that I will have to share a little at a time, both from David's and Neal's lyrics, but this one came to mind right away.
It was around the 27th of August. We were planning to go to Kansas City to see the AI concert and here comes Hurricane Gustav almost three years to the day after Hurricane Katrina, heading right towards us. After surviving Katrina, I was totally freaking out. Trying to figure out what to do, whether I could go to KC, what I had to do to prepare for the storm, totally losing it. I was sending gloom and doom emails, like the world was going to end. And then from itunes on my computer, David sings "We've been here before, we'll be here again. So go on and rest your head before you lose it again." How could I not laugh. Those two small verses centered me and focused me and calmed me down so I could do what I needed to do and deal with it all. Missed the concert but survived the storm. So now that is my calming mantra. ---------------- Now playing: Jodee Messina - Heads California, Tales Carolina |

Axium has the rep for being harder than AH, but I don't necessarily think that's the case. His voice is more raw, which gives it more of an "edge" but there are a lot of slower, more melodic songs. Balance, Therapy, Unlucky (which I believe is in 6/8 time, like TOML), Just in Case (the Cain's Ballroom Recording version is staggering), Hold (Andy sings with him at the end, it's gorgeous), Leave Behind (Powerful song), Incarcerate (one of the only Axium songs that doesn't have David with a writing credit, but still gorgeous) I'm actually kind of jealous that you have the almost the whole Axium catalogue to hear for the first time! Lol. |

hanging by a moment - lifehouse
desperate for changing starving for truth closer to where i started chasing after you i am falling even more in love with you letting go of all i've held onto i'm standing here until you make me move i'm hanging by a moment here with you forgetting all i'm lacking completely incomplete i'm taking your invitation you take all of me the bolded lyrics i like because they remind me - to let go - and that others are imperfect too... in a world where most people try desperately to hide their faults and portray an heir of perfection, it is easy to forget that others people are really imperfect and you arent the only one. |
