'Idol' winner David Cook to perform at Rio Tinto By Scott Iwasaki Deseret News Published: Tuesday, June 8, 2010 2:38 p.m. MDT 2 comments Facebook Twitter | E-MAIL The last time "American Idol" winner David Cook performed in Utah was back in 2008 during the "American Idol" tour. Cook, who took the winning title during Season 7 of "American Idol," will perform at the Rio Tinto Stadium after the Real Salt Lake/Los Angeles Galaxy Game on June 9. The singer said he's looking forward to coming back to Utah. "It has been a minute for sure (since I was in Utah)," Cook said during an interview from Los Angeles. "I'm not sure what I'll be playing, because we're still trying to figure out the set list." Cook has been busy working on his new CD, the follow-up to his 2008 self-titled release. "The priority is to put our best foot forward with this second record," he said. "So far I've really tried to put the focus on writing all of this record." In order to do that, Cook has "upped his game" with his songwriting. "I've got in a room with some great people and really tried to write in a way that is not completely in left field, but not necessarily in my comfort zone. "(With the new album) I wanted to push the boundaries on people's perceptions of what type of artist I am." With the last album, Cook said everything happened so fast. "I had to rely on past experiences and thoughts on the future," he said. "Now that we have more time, I'm able to focus on the moment and the present." Some of that means reflecting on loss, especially the death of his older brother Adam, who died last year after an 11-year battle with cancer. "This record has been extremely therapeutic and allowed me to see the hopeful side of lost," Cook said. "In that regard (making this record) allows us to explore all the different avenues that a song could go. "This record is my baby, and I take that seriously." In that same vein, Cook said he sees his involvement in charity work just as important. Some of the charities he supports are the Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation and the David Wright Foundation. The latter assists in the health, emotional development and education of children in need, set up by New York Mets baseball player David Wright. "One of the greatest things is the charity work, and to have this platform to be a voice of things that I'm passionate about outside of music is paramount (in my life)," Cook said. "I enjoy stepping outside of myself and this bubble and do things that feel bigger than just singing a song. "(I like) gong to a children's hospital and seeing a child smile," he said. "I'm heavily involved in cancer charities, and hopefully I'll be around when that cure comes." If you go... What: David Cook Where: Rio Tinto Stadium, 9256 S. State When: June 9, immediately following the Real Salt Lake/L.A. Galaxy game How much: $22-$67 Phone: 801-727-2700 Web: www.riotintostadium.com e-mail: scott@desnews.com

David Cook to perform before and after RSL Game Music » "Idol" winner will sing the anthem, then perform after the game at Rio Tinto. By David Burger The Salt Lake Tribune Updated: 06/08/2010 03:58:52 PM MDT David Cook wants Utahns to know that there are no hard feelings. He knows that he beat Murray's David Archuleta in season seven of "American Idol," but hopes that the pain Utahns felt about Archuleta finishing in second-place has dissipated. "I'm hoping that enough time has passed," Cook said. "Hopefully I will be received well." The 27-year-old rocker will perform in Utah for the first time since touring with Archuleta in the "American Idols LIVE! Tour" in 2008. Cook will sing the national anthem before tonight's RSL soccer game at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, and then perform for about an hour after the game ends. It's the second consecutive year for a "Summer Kick-Off" event, where a singer has performed a short post-game concert, said Bill Manning, RSL and Rio Tinto Stadium president. "With David Archuleta last year and David Cook this year, these 'American Idol' performers fit our demographics perfectly and we look forward to continuing this tradition for years to come." After performing 153 shows in 2009, Cook has spent 2010 writing more than 40 songs for his follow-up to his 2008 major-label debut, which sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide. Spending 10 months on the road was valuable in writing for his sophomore album, as the singer said he realized that some songs sound great in the studio but don't necessarily work on stage. "I took a lot of lessons from the tour," Cook said. "I'm trying to be more cognizant of the live show ... The big parts will be bigger, and the small parts will be smaller." The focus of his forthcoming album -- due for a fall release -- will be "more of a concise thought, more about the hopeful side of loss," he said. Losing his oldest brother, Adam, to brain cancer last year inspired some of his songs, Cook said. After tonight's concert, he will fly to Los Angeles and begin pre-production on his album Friday. Tonight, Cook will play for about an hour, doubling the amount of songs Archuleta performed at a similar event last year, said Trey Fitz-Gerald, director of public affairs and broadcasting for RSL and Rio Tinto Stadium. "[I will] do whatever RSL wants me to do," Cook said. "I'll even put on the mascot costume." That might -- might -- offset the fact that the Missouri-born singer is an admitted fan of RSL rival, the Kansas City Wizards. dburger@sltrib.com |
