The moment had been building all night for No. 1, which meant it was time for David Cook. Cook raised from the floorboards with guitar in hand and an agenda to bring the house down — as if we’d have it any other way, duh!

His “AI” show-stopping rock performances of Lionel Richie’s “Hello” and Michael Jackson by way of Chris Cornell on “Billie Jean” proved to be major show-stoppers at Van Andel Arena, too. The crowd remained standing while Cook did Steven Tyler proud on Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing.”

Cook talked of his brother’s plight with cancer, while thanking the crowd. He dedicated Foo Fighter’s “My Hero” to his brother. It was a touching moment that reminded everyone that no matter how famous he becomes, he’s still human and has feelings, too.
