My husband and I went to the Declaration Tour in Morgantown at West Virginia University on March 6. We spent the day roaming around the WVU campus ... we graduated from WVU 20 years ago, and we were just reminiscing.
We got to the Mountainlair (the concert venue) early in the afternoon. A line of David Cook fans had already started forming because tickets had to be picked up at will-call and there were no assigned seats. So I chatted with some of the fans and was told there would be a sound check at 3:30. So I hung around for a while. Well, 5:00 rolled around and still no sound check. So my husband and I left the Mountainlair to go downtown and do some bar hopping and sight seeing. When we pulled out of the Mountainlair parking garage, guess who we saw walking down the street? David and the band. My husband and I just continued driving downtown. We parked the car, and when my husband got out of the car, David was right there next to us, walking down the street. We went into a pub and guess who's there? David and the band! David was just chillin out ... relaxing before the show and drinking a beer. It was so cool. My husband and I sat at the table right next to him, about two feet away. The waitress had no idea who he was until someone told her. No one bothered him for pictures, etc. (except one girl), and he just seemed like an average guy. About a half hour later, David paid the tab and left. My husband and I left about 15 minutes later and we walked around downtown for a while. Here's the good part. My husband and I walked into another bar and guess what? David and the band were there, too! It was so cool. By this time, I realized I had to do something. So I told my waiter to tell David I wanted to buy him a drink. The waiter went to David's table and told him, David looked over at me, acknowledged me, and ordered a shot of Jack Daniels. When he got the drink, he looked at me, "toasted" me with the drink, and I "toasted" David with my beer. It was so freakin' awesome. About 20 minutes later, David left. On his way out, he passed by our table and said, "Thanks for the drink." I said, "You are very welcome." My husband then said, "We wish you good luck." David said, "Thanks. I appreciate it." And that was it. I didn't see David again until the concert that night, which was fantastic. It was such a cool encounter with David that day. He is a genuinely gracious and nice person. I will never forget it. I didn't ask him to take a picture with me or for his autograph because I already have both from Ford Day. I could tell he was just hanging out and relaxing before the concert, so I left him alone and just bought him a drink. It was an awesome day, and I just had to share it with all the DC fans. :-) |

I am sure it took a lot of restraint not to ask for a picture or something. I don't know if I could do that (I would hope that I could) Congrats. sounds like a great day. Jack Daniels huh! |

this story is like my fantasy come true.....except that i DEFINITELY would have done the JD shot with him!!! Me, too ... if I would've had a couple more beers in me! But he was just relaxing with the band, and I didn't want to go "fan girl" crazy on him and bother him, so I left him alone. It was exciting just being there with him and having him acknowledge me the way he did. I couldn't have asked for anything more. :-) |

The only shot I EVER do is JD!!! One more thing I have in common with Mr. Cook! How cool is that. Seriously, though, this was such a nice fan encounter. It's so nice that David is just able to relax and be the regular guy that he is, and you shared in that experience! How very cool for you. Thanks for sharing your awesome story!!

I had a similiar event happen with another band member driving back from a concert except it wasnt in a bar but just waiting for the light too turn green, and it wasnt David Cook(I wish) it was just Trace Cyrus(Mileys Cyruus's bro) and I was like "Hi" |

tracig, I'm glad you had a good time and I'm sure David appreciated your restrained and supportive fan behavior!
I gotta say, though, your story worries me a little. I mean, I know that in many ways a bar feels like home away from home for DC and the EEB, but . . . well, even if this was"fun" and "relaxing" for your and your hubby as you enjoyed some free time together in anticipation of a great concert -- when I think of it from DC's point of view it sounds more like bored and lonely. It sounds like the down side of life on the moon, and I hate to think of him and the guys hanging out in strange bars at this time of day with nothing to do but drink. Yikes. It sounds from the interviews like they can barely feed and groom themselves on this schedule (e.g., Chef Boyardee for breakfast, no daily showers), so I couldn't imagine adding a puppy. Now, I'm thinking the sooner Dublin joins the tour, the better! Puppies are always good for some fun, some cuddling, some exercise, some laughs. Don't mind me, tracig -- it's just the ol' maternal cougar coming out. NEMO Cougar |

Don't mind me, tracig -- it's just the ol' maternal cougar coming out. NEMO Cougar I never thought of it that way. I'm a mother of a 4 year old and a 7 year old, so I do understand where you are coming from. But I must say, David and the band really just looked like they were relaxing before the show. They were talking, laughing, etc. And from what I could tell, they only had one beer in each bar (2 beers total each) -- other than the shot of JD I bought David (which he ordered). So it's not like they were hanging out getting trashed or anything during the middle of the day (it was around 6:00 when all this occurred). And they probably don't get a chance to do things like this very often. Plus, it was a gorgeous day, sunny and about 70 degrees, and the college atmosphere in Morgantown just lends itself to walking around, bar hopping for a while, and then doing whatever. I believe David was coming from some cities that had been cold and snowy, so I don't blame him for wanting to walk around and enjoy the weather, including sneaking into a few bars and having a beer. The downtown area where the taverns/bars are located in Morgantown is very close to the Mountainlair, where the concert was held. So I think the guys just took advantage of a beautiful day to chill out, walk around a bit, and have a beer -- to be ordinary guys. I think they deserve this, given the hectic schedule they are on right now. Don't get me wrong. I do see your point. But I don't necessarily agree this is the "downside" of things for David. David looked calm, relaxed and like he was enjoying himself. And I'm sure the guys don't do this in every city they visit. And remember ... David was a bartender and played in bars with his band(s). He obviously enjoys the bar atmosphere. :-) |

Very touching story. David and the band should enjoy what little anonymity they have now and enjoy the simple pleasures of just being men.

Glad to hear the mood was upbeat and that a good time was had by all NEMO Cougar |

Great story, and such a nice way to display respectful fan behavior. Impressive!! Lucky lady! Yes, totally agree. This is the kind of stuff I like to hear. I never thought of it that way. I'm a mother of a 4 year old and a 7 year old, so I do understand where you are coming from. But I must say, David and the band really just looked like they were relaxing before the show. He obviously enjoys the bar atmosphere. :-) I totally agree. I mean it's not like they would hit the town and go shopping and antiquing or something like that if it was in the middle of the day, but around 6:00 in the evening that is all that is open and I would probably do the same thing if I wanted to kill some time before a concert. This is what guys do at that age. They hit some of the bars to chill, grap some bar food, take in the local bar scene. My son in law does that. He and his friends meet at their favorite bar and have a beer after work. If you are in a strange town and you want to chill and you are guys - that is what you do. Even as an older woman, I would do that also if my friends were with me. |
