ADORABLE "AMERICAN IDOL" WINNER DAVID COOK TRAVELED TO ETHIOPIA WITH THE UNITED NATIONS FOUNDATION TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR FEMALE EMPOWERMENT.
COOK VISITED THE U-N'S BRIGHT FUTURE PROJECT WHICH EDUCATES GIRLS IN ETHIOPIA ON HOW TO BREAK THE POVERTY CYCLE AND CURB CHILD MARRIAGE RATES.
THE EXPERIENCE WAS FILMED AND WILL AIR DURING THE ANNUAL CHARITY SPECIAL "IDOL GIVES BACK."
COOK SAYS THE TRIP CHANGED HIM.
COOK says: "The day I showed up, I actually got to you know, walk in, and they filmed me meeting this classroom of girls and our producer Ron asked the girls if any of them knew who I was and nothing will make you feel more uncomfortable than thirty girls with blank stares on their faces, like I have no idea who this guy is. But they were amazing and they allowed me in a really short period of time to kind of indoctrinate myself into their situation and they really made me feel like I was a part of their world and it was really eye-opening. I think it's impossible to leave a situation like that and not feel changed."

COOK says: "I don't think there's any other way to say it. I've been given this amazing opportunity in my life to do something I love to do and so to be able to pay it forward a little bit. To be able to travel around the world and really see alternate realities like the ones that exist in Ethiopia and feel like I'm in this position to I guess promote change, it's a big deal."

What Not to Sing Power Ranks the "ShowStopper" performances over the years. [Here] Kelly's Stuff Like That There was #1 and David's Billie Jean was #2. Lots of other David performances made it on that list.

As for Slezak, he tweeted after the EW rankings:

@ewmichaelslezak I struggled among "Billie Jean," "Always Be My Baby," and "The World I Know" (because TWIK moved me to tears)

Also totally heartwarming was David Cook's video from a girls' school in Ethiopia, particularly his connection with impossibly cute 7-year-old orphan Mekdes. Who else was left wanting more footage of them playing pattycake, of hearing Mekdes declare her desire to be a ''doctor!'', of listening to Cookie sing ''Hero'' while a band of tiny (and so adorable) swaybots gathered around him? The season 7 champ also made a brief appearance on stage with Ryan, looking very Thurston Howell (only hotter) in a smoking jacket and jaunty cravat. Still, if we're dishing fashion here, I preferred the blue v-neck with navy collar he was rocking in Addis Ababa.

[Also, on the previous page, he takes Idol to task for having DC there but not to sing, and has a picture of DC with the caption header "MMM, COOKIE." Heh.]
