Many performers throw in a little snippet of a "vintage" song during a song. It is not unusual. I have musician friends who throw in Mean Mr Mustard by the Beatles when they do one of their songs. The key and the song itself lends to throwing it in. Just pure fun.

The instrumental part in the middle of KOTN is somewhat similar to the melody of the Eagles' Hotel California. The story I remember hearing from somewhere around the fandom was that David said he and the guys noticed the similarity one night while fooling around with songs and stuff on the bus, and that he was dared to sing it at the next show. So he did. And now it's become pretty much standard every time he performs KOTN now.

 i wasn't expecting it at all at the show in monticello,ia - let's just say i got a little excited... hotel california is one of my all-time favorite songs!

He did at the show in Athens, GA, I think it was the first time. He mentioned him and the guys fooling around with something on the bus and started singing it, but he messed up kinda and said something about more practice and everybody got a good laugh. He didn't do it at the Chattanooga, TN concert though, was kinda bummed about that.

David sang Hotel California tonight in Charlottesville, VA in the middle of KOTN. It was great as usual and got a big response from the audience. I didn't tape tonight's KOTN, but I do have one from the WV State Fair back in August where he did HC in the middle. It's the crazy night w/ the Greenman, this time a member of GRO put the suit on -- HC starts at about the 1:30 mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOaRCe7rEME
Also the other night in Clifton Park, NY David did some crowd surfing while singing HC during KOTN (go to the 3:30 mark): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqbRfHJ5StQ. And I'm sure there are plenty more videos out there on YT. So I think HC in the middle of KOTN is here to stay! |
