OKAY, so I am admittedly a chronic worrier/anxiety-ridden type person, LOL ..I PROMISE though, there is WAYYYY more to me than that!!! FUN stuff!!! I SWEAR!!!
Anyway-- should it be concerning at all that neither DYFAM or TLG are not even on the top 200 on ITunes??? And I live in a large city-- I have not ONCE heard either single on the radio-- I have called 2 stations (which normally play David) many times, only to be told something like, 'yeah, we don't have it yet'.... and stock answers like that... STILL they are not being played...?! I am green to the workings of the music business, etc, so I genuinely do not know.. but... IS it concerning that these singles seem to have done extremely poorly...? Or is this like 'the norm' in the music business for singles released so far prior to the album release to not do so well at first...? HELP! ..any information/consoling would be greatly appreciated!!!!!! LOL!!!!! THANK YOU!!! |

What a gift I understand your anxiety I share it but I try to take comfort in the postings that Mary brings over from DCO. Like you I am green about such things. The postings she brings over is either in the charts thread or It's coming its coming thread. It shows the spin increases and the HAC adds and that it is normal to start out slow and build momentum. I remember LO starting out slow too but finally built up to where we heard it all the time. Like you I want nothing but good success for David he deserves it so much. |

I too understand and am an anxiety-driven person concerning things and people close to my heart. I check 2-3 times a day online for any positive crumb I can read that encourages optimism. I want David to soar with this coming album. I agree that MG's posts are eagerly looked forward to. Thanks, MG, for all you do!! |

I have learned that worrying about such things accomplishes nothing other than to make yourself crazy. He has never been huge here on the radio although they sure don't mind having him visit the station (he was here last week). His sound just doesn't seem to be what is looked for. Daughtry gets his stuff played more and I'm thinking it is because his work got attention at a time when it was better accepted. I feel that timing is very important. A couple of years can make a big difference.
Now, that doesn't mean things could pick up and this new song could take off. I would love to see it. I do know that contacting radio stations constantly doesn't do much other than to irritate the DJs who really don't have a say so about what is played. I think gone are the days when you could call up the good ol' DJ and ask for a record to be played and he would grab the record and play it. Those play lists are decided and that's that. I have been told by other artists it is much better to contact the station after they play the song to express that you really enjoyed the song. Who sang it? Well, it is really good and I hope to hear it again. If the station gets the inkling you are a fan, you are sunk and that doesn't help the artist one iota. I figure what will happen will happen. That music business is a crazy one where talent doesn't necessarily guarantee success. I will purchase the CDs I need, attend some shows and talk to the people I know about giving the music a try....but not to the point where they run every time they see me coming, though. Many times, less is certainly way more effective than more. Fans who feel the need to use David Cook in every sentence they utter don't realize how counterproductive they actually are. I read stuff where people are whining that their family members exercise major eye rolling at the mention of David Cook. Well, are you constantly mentioning him? I would get irritated as well. I keep my mentions to a minimum. Oh yes, I may mention something funny that I saw about him to my husband, but I don't bring up the subject very much. My husband actually likes Cook and I would not want to jeopardize that. These next several months should be very interesting. Here's hoping for decent sales and a successful tour. Jeannine |

Well said Jeannine.
Ardent fans can actually turn off the very people they are trying to impress. DJ's know by now that David has many followers who are deeply devoted to everything he does. The radio programmers need feedback from the rest of their audience to see if the average listener is attracted to a new song no matter who it is by. I think TLG was a smart choice for a first single, but I also think they should have had the video released at the same time. A hot video can always boost the interest in a new song. Perhaps David doesn't need a top selling single to sell his new CD. From what I've heard it will be wonderful. Having said that, who knows? As you mentioned the music biz and the tastes of the public can change in a day. David's stuff is more classic rock that anything trendy, I think that's why people love him and why is first CD was a hit. His music will stand the test of time and that's really more import in the long run. Having said that, I yearn for him to have a really smash single, so that more people will be turned on to his artistry. |

Everyone-- thanks for your replies!
womannextdoor and cookieookums-- LOL obviously y'all and I are cut more from the same cloth!!! THANK YOU for sharing your thoughts with me on this-- it always does feel a bit better knowing you are not alone in something ..and zoo and Avid4David- well alas... unfortunately.. I just plain don't possess that skill of turning off the 'worrydom' ...my biggest thing, and probably is with a lot of the other 'worriers' out there, is just that... well if his single/ALBUM/tour etc etc etc is *not* successful, for WHATever reason... then his opportunities to create and put out music to us begin to slowly diminish and diminish... and THAT is what I fear the most... not just for him and his loved ones but... well for what I suppose you could call a 'selfish' reason too-- *I* just don't want to EVER not be able to have our David around... he just plain has brought too much talent and JOY and all things wonderful to us, and I would HATE for anything to go wrong to where this/he was something we could no longer access ANYWAY ...that is all it is |

RCA never sent DYFAM to stations for adds. It was never intended to get radio airplay.
On the other hand, TLG is getting a full promotional roll-out by RCA. David has been doing tons of radio promotion w/ interviews and special acoustic shows. TLG is most definitely getting radio airplay (just got its second New York City add this afternoon, and that is market #1); however, David is not Gaga or Katy Perry -- his songs don't automatically debut at #1 on the Hot 100. It's a slow build. LO did it and CBTM did it. It takes time. TLG is charting at #38 on the Mediabase AC chart today. It's just bubbling under #50 on the HAC chart, getting the same slow and steady increases as the new Matt Nathanson and Mat Kearney songs. So far about 35 radio stations have played TLG at least once. And several stations, like KPLZ in Seattle, WWFS in NYC, WMMX in Dayton, and KLLC in San Francisco, have it in their regular rotation. It's a slow and steady process. LO and CBTM didn't hit their peak spins until they were out for about 4 or 5 months. TLG has been out for less than 3 weeks. Radio is very insular. For the most part, you only get to listen to stations in your area, so if you don't hear a particular song, you think it's not playing ANYWHERE. And, yeah, there are some markets where David is never played, but then there are some where he is played constantly. TOML, LO and CBTM still get plenty of airplay nationally. I have a chart: ![]() This is based on the daily spin count at yes.com, and you can see the steady upward trend, with a bigger bump in the last few days (Sundays are anomalies because syndicated programming, like the plethora of countdown shows, affects spin count.) RCA/19 put a lot of time, effort and $$ into producing This Loud Morning, and gave David just about free rein, something they would not have done if they weren't convinced TLM was going to be a hit and make them even more $$. RCA/19 have confidence in David, it would be great if the fans did, too (fortunately most fans do.) |

I just wanted to add that WPLJ- NY (#1 HAC station in the country) added TLG today, which is huge! My understanding is that they don't normally add a song this early on, which makes the news even better. (You would know more about that then me.) Things are indeed looking up for David and TLG on radio today. |

That is the nature of this business. My hope is that he has invested what he has gotten (and continues to get) very wisely. There is a life after this and he is young. Yes, we may not see him all that much, but my thoughts always lie with whether or not he has a happy life. Perhaps that is the mom in me. I don't know. There are so many extremely talented musicians out there that could use support. Don't put your eggs all in one basket musically. Enjoy what is out there. People who are only focused on one person are losing out on everyone around them. I always think that David would hardly bear to listen to just one person or band. Just be like him and enjoy music...period. It is very easy to shut off the angst when you have so much else to enjoy as well. Music is a wonderful thing for both performers and for listeners. Had the opportunity to go to one of the radio promotion events and it was amazing. David, accompanied by Neil, performed Heros, Come Back to Me, Light On, and Last Goodbye. Hope the accoustic version of The Last Goodbye is on the bonus accoustic EP. In between he answered questions and shared stories. The audience was enthusiastic and I know that it takes a while for things to get moving with radio play. Seems like some areas of the West Coast are just slow to pick things up. All will be well.

In case anyone is still worried about TLG's radio airplay progress, here's a chart showing the number of TLG spins (the daily rolling 7-day totals from Mediabase) as compared to CBTM at a similar time in its radio play history (TLG in blue, CBTM in red):
![]() As you can see TLG has had a steady increase in radio airplay over the last month, up 239% and is actually doing a bit better than CBTM was at a similar time in its history. This next chart shows the daily TLG spin count at yes.com: ![]() The number of spins everyday on yes.com is a bit more erratic than the Mediabase numbers, but you can still see the general upward progression over the past almost 6 weeks. I know there have been some people who have been quite "concerned" over what they perceive to be a less than optimal radio airplay and chart climbing progression, but I think the old adage "slow and steady wins the race" applies here. |

Just wanted to chime in and say that I have been hearing TLG a LOT on Dayton's MIX 107.7. It is played pretty much on a daily basis, and as the album drop approaches, I have noticed an increase in plays of other David Cook songs - Come Back to Me, Light On, and even Time of My Life! One day at work, I heard THREE DC songs in the 4 hours I work, including TLG. Amazing!!

WOW well I just have to say again-- Mary, THANK YOU for all that you do-- I have come here to this thread basically on a daily basis for a long time--- knowing that I would *always* be able to find out about 'all things David', thanks to your amazing posts... so... THANK YOU SOOOOO much again
Willow-- wow those charts were amazing and really do show us what is going on... as I had said I am *totally* green to the workings of the music business, so your insight really helped a lot Aside from everything though, I'm still confused.. I guess that's a good word... about why TLG has *still* not been played even ONCE here in Phoenix.. this is the 5th (possibly 6th right now) largest city in the country.. and as said before, this particular station here, MIX 96.9, had *always* played Cookie-- but for some reason, weeks after TLG was released, it still has not played it even *once*.. we checked on it a couple times, each time being told by the DJ at the station that they had gotten a lot of calls about this but... really didn't know what to tell us.. was only their job to play the music, not pick it... ANYWAY! womannextdoor-- just wanted to say hi to you real quick! Have a great day everyone, and great upcoming Holiday!!! Julie |

Julie Your DJ is correct. They play what they are given and really have no say so. Calling them numerous times probably only serves to irritate them. What I have been told by artists is to call after the song is played to compliment them on the song without giving them the impression you are a fan....but more like an interested listener who heard something new you liked. If they get the idea you are a fan calling in, you can forget it. It will be interesting to see how TLG does. IMO, it isn't the song I would have picked as a single, but, as RCA Ed indicated in one of his many posts, they don't like to choose songs fans would choose because they feel it is only an opinion by a minority of people and want a song they feel will be liked by more than just us. I'm still scratching my head on that one because I got the feeling we were being told our taste in music sucks, LOL. Ah well....things will happen as they are meant to happen. No worries. Got way too much on my plate to be hugely concerned about it. Whatever happens will happen. No amount of voting, calling, etc is going to affect the outcome all that much. All I can do is suggest that people give it a try without sounding too over the top about it. The CD is a pretty good piece of work and I do hope people will purchase it. Jeannine |

This is what Hits Daily Double predicts after first day sales. It will be interesting to see if this number, indeed, comes to pass....
Seventh season American Idol winner David Cook’s second 19/RCA/RMG album is looking at estimated sales in the 35-40k range, a far cry from the 280k debut for his first album. Beyonce is certainly getting big numbers predicted (275-300K). Selena and The Scene (for you people who like to keep up with Joey like I do) has a prediction of 75-80K. Edited to say they upgraded predicted sales for TLM to 45-50K. Every little bit helps. Jeannine |
