2009 marks Relay for Life's 25th anniversary! What better way to celebrate David and his 1st solo tour, than to organize a Relay team, and support a cause that is near and dear to David's heart.

Over the next few days, I will be posting Relay For Life events occuring in or within 20 miles of the cities where David is stopping on his tour. Listings will include links to the Relay event pages, where you can register your own team, sign up to join an existing team, or make a donation to a team. Although the Relay events won't necessarily coincide with David's tour dates, fans can still organize a team for the nearest Relay events, or stage a "Show Us Your HOPE" event to promote Relay for Life while David is in town. Even if your tour stop has already passed, it's not too late! Go ahead and get involved!

What is "Show Us Your HOPE" you ask? Here is a passage from RelayForLife.org describing the purpose of this campaign:

QUOTE
"As we mark this milestone (25th Anniversary), be sure to celebrate the role Relay For Life volunteers have played in the fight against cancer. Show Us Your HOPE is about demonstrating your passion and resolve to end this disease. Just a simple activity that captures the essence of the Relay For Life spirit will make a powerful statement about our commitment to end cancer."

All participation, no matter how small, is relevant and significant. Don't be afraid to give whatever time you have, even if you think it couldn't possibly make a difference, because IT WILL!

Here are a few suggestions for Show Us Your HOPE events:
  • Gather volunteers together to spell out H-O-P-E with luminaria at the college/university stadium where David is performing.
  • Spell out H-O-P-E in the window of a campus building, or a large building in your community.
  • Illuminate a building or buildings on campus or in your community with purple lights.

My favorite suggestion is to do a "Paint Your Town Purple" event, which could include:
  • Encouraging folks in your community to wear purple for a day.
  • Tying purple ribbons around trees in your community or on the college/University campus where David is performing.
  • How about convincing the campus venue to light up with purple lighting that evening?

How awesome would it be to do something like this when David is there to perform. Imagine David seeing H-O-P-E spelled out in the bleachers of the campus stadium. Need a visual?

QUOTE
"Promoting Relay For Life as an event that brings hope to those fighting the disease in your community can help increase participation, fundraising and volunteerism. Your demonstration can inspire others to fight back." -RelayForLife.org

Click here to go to the "Show Us Your HOPE" page at RelayForLife.org, for more hints and suggestions, and all the tools you'll need to stage an event, including more suggestions for activities, supporting documents you may need, including a sample press release, and photo tips for documenting your event.

Don't want to wait for me to post your Relay event? You can search for your event by zipcode or city and state here.

Don't forget, if you wish to pledge your volunteer hours to Operation Give Back, check out the link here for information on the project, and a link to the pledge form.

So I challenge you to use your imagination, be creative, and show us YOUR hope! Let's celebrate David, and show him that we believe in
THE POWER OF PURPLE!

Hey everyone. All the concert locations have now been posted with links to the nearest Relay For Life events.

If you would like to organize a Relay team or already have a team that's not in or near one of the concert locations, go ahead and post here as well. This forum is for all things Relay For Life, no matter where the team is located.

Please feel free to use the threads I posted for each concert location to organize your teams, post information about events I didn't list, recruit other members for your teams, ask questions, whatever you need.

If you're reluctant to participate because you don't have time to organize a team, check out the Relay event pages, and see if there's a team you can join. Many of the event pages also list Show Us Your HOPE activities already being planned. The contact info posted in each thread for the local American Cancer Society Office is also a great way to find out about volunteer activities already in the works.

Whatever you do, just remember to take pictures so you can share with your fellow Word Nerds!

Although the Relay For Life forum has now been removed, please feel free to contact me with questions if you are interested in participating in Relay For Life this year, or in the future. The Gallery of HOPE will still remain in the charity forum for those of you who are participating in Relay this summer and would like to post your stories and pictures. Again, here is the link to search for Relay For Life events in your area:
