So the World Cup is going to be starting in another week's time and I was just wondering if anyone here is gonna be following it? Which team(s) will you be supporting other than that of your home country?
I'm really looking forward to it, though I'm not sure I'll be supporting England - our team is a bit of a joke, to be honest... |

I am not sure why, but I hate watching soccer. I think that I'll probably not tune in.

I'll be following it!!!... I'll be supporting Portugal first and foremost of course, but they've been having lots of difficulties for this championship, so I'm not very confident unfortunately, unlike last time... Hope is the last to die though!!! Other than my home country, maybe The Netherlands.

I;m not too sure whom i'll be supporting, but i think i may go for Brazil or Portugal. 'm not treally an England fan but i love Wayne Rooney.
Rio Ferdinand is out for England with a knee injury while Didier Drigba is very doubtful for Ivory Coast after breaking his arm. |

My family's Brazilian, so I'm rooting for Brazil even though I'm not watching.

A little late coming to this thread, but I was rooting for USA. However, they lost over the weekend. Actually, from the responses I read, most of the teams we had seem to be rooting for, either got knocked out in the qualifying round or round of 16. I'm not sure how Brazil did though. I really had thought the USA were going to come through. May be a bit biased, but the USA did get jipped at times. I hope they get their revenge on Ghana (again) in 4-years. Probably would've rooted for Italy after USA, but they got knocked out before the US. Not really rooting for anyone now, except for whoever beats Ghana

The teams I've been rooting for haven't been knocked out yet!!!... Portugal's playing tomorrow against Spain though, and although I've been pleasantly surprised with my home country's games, I'm scared we won't make it, since Spain is the Euro 2008 champion, and supposedly have a better team than us, but I still have hope and will be rooting for them until the end!!! The Netherlands are in the quarter finals, and Brazil made it through today too! And I agree, the referees have been doing a very poor job during this World Cup, unfortunately it seems worse than ever, it's very disappointing and sad. I hope that after all this, they finally decide to use some technology in the refereeing...

Baseball could use it too...at least every now and then...for those really close calls. If you don't want to get technology, then at least get another referee out there or something. Especially if the team scores a goal. If it's questionable, then ta-da there's a screen to look at and you can slow it down, etc. I wonder if it's a money thing? Either way, invest in it, because it could mean winning the game/big prize or not. I know the World Cup isn't over with yet, but they have 4-years to do something...I hope they do. However, I'm not going to hold my breath. |

I'm curious to see just how satisfiying winning this thing will be since so many bad calls have been made. Wonder if the victory will be a little hollow. Who knows. I agree that technology needs to catch up with this sport. Way too much human error and blatantly bad calls. Makes me wonder if those refs could possibly possess an agenda of some sorts.
I just don't care for soccer and never have. It is probably my least favorite sport to watch. Jeannine |

Talking about bad calls, Portugal lost to Spain 1x0, when there were TWO off sides (is that how you call it in English? lol Sorry guys...) that weren't called on immediately before Spain's goal. *BIG SIGH* Oh well, can't do anything about it unfortunately!

Now that Portugal are out i've decided to concentrate on following Brazil, they've shown during their match against Chile that they can play with flair and yet be tough and resilient at the same time. Wgile i'm not really a fan of Germany i've to admit that i'm impressed with the way they're playing-they've demonstarted that they can play attacking soccer and they're also a young side. I would've loved to see South Korea and Japan in the quarter-finals but unfortunately they've been knocked out, but at least they've impressed, unlike the likes of France, Italy and England, who've been nothing but an absolute joke. And credit to Uruguay and Paraguay too as they've played very well so far.
And yes, it's about time soccer introdued video technology. I can't believe that FIFA(the world goberning body of soccer)is soo out of touch with the times, with their unwillingness to use goal-line technology during games. Too many ridiculous calls have been made not just in this World Cup, but also in club league matches as well, and they've cost teams vital points. |

So the final 4 are Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Uruguay...who would've thunk it?!?! Anything can happen in the name of sports. I haven't really seen much of the World Cup lately, so I don't really have a feel on the teams. Of course it's hard to watch it when they air it when I'm working. Hopefully I can see some of it. I don't really care who wins, all I'm going to say is good luck to the final 4 and may the best team win...with the refs seeing/calling the right/fair plays!!! Either way...good luck...it's going to be a fight to the finish.

Uruguay is the big surprise for me... I'll be rooting for The Netherlands and Germany. Uruguay surprised even themselves. I heard that they had only booked their hotel rooms until July 5th, because the team didn't expect to make it this far. So, FIFA had to help them out. I'm guessing Uruguay usually isn't the best when it comes to soccer/football. Well now they have a chance to get third place. Good luck to Spain and the Netherlands. I hope I can watch...if I don't have anything going on. |
