DC is really unveiling my inner word nerd. i've never been an avid reader... but i've always loved writing. i have a strong soft spot for alliteration... it's my favorite thing ever. i also love playing with long and short syllables and choosing the best words in a sentence so it not only makes sense, but has a melodically pleasing rhythm. i use thesauraus.com a lot searching for that perfect word. of course this anal retentiveness doesn't apply to my posting. I used to keep a personal journal. i threw all my writing out about two years ago and i haven't written since. maybe i should start a blog. hmmm. the only thing i would want to write about now would probably be Cookie anyway. haha...
anyway... one entirely too long post later, I like today's word: Upon the conclusion of my encounter with my favorite Idol, I stepped aside and stood shaking with shock and ineffable joy. |

Baleful
With menace in his smile, Simon heaped his scorn And cast a baleful eye At David. Who slowly raised his brow, Then raised his lovesome voice And brought intoxication. |

Intrepid meaning fearless, brave, bold....what Simon used to call DC after hearing his arrangements. |

Greetings all!
I've always been a bit of a word-nerd myself, always having excelled in English, particularly spelling. I remember switching schools in the fifth grade and the school that I moved to thought that they were SO advanced (especially since I was moving from a rural area to a suburban setting), so they tested me to find what LEVEL I was at. My math skills, sadly, were lacking (as always and they still are), but I was reading and spelling at an 8th grade level, to which they were a bit shocked. My parents weren't. I've always had an extensive vocabulary and was curious and inquisitive about the meaning of words at a very young age. I love the fact that David's word-nerd-dom has extended to his "plethora" (his favorite word - according to the interview he gave with TV Guide? I think?) of fans. Not only is he entertaining the masses, but educating them as well. When he used the word "ancillary" during his interview on the Mike and Juliet Show, I was waiting for her to ask what that meant. For those of you budding-word-nerds, here are the definitions: PLETHORA - overabundance, excess (archaically referred to a blood condition - too many red corpuscles in the blood or an increased amount of blood) ANCILLARY - having a secondary nature, subordinate, subsidiary Looking forward to more nerdy words, ~Kristen |

Simon's comments on Tuesday night eluded to baleful results, but in the end our hero's talent was vindicated by America's vote to name David Cook their American Idol.

Simon Cowell on 'Britain's Got Talent' - "It's like having ice-cream with onion; they don't go together" - think he needs to learn some new phrases, never mind some new words!!!
Word Nerds and Cookies Rock and Rule!!! If I think of any good words - i'll be posting them here... |

Travis---Would it be possible to have the replies to the "word for the day" appear just after your word selection for the day? The way it appears on my screen, your word choice for the day appears at the top of the list whereas the replies using that word appear three or four pages in. For instance, today's word--baleful--appears at the first of the list, then you need to scroll through all the sentences using the previous days' words before reaching the responses to "baleful". I believe many readers may be becoming confused as to what the word for the day is because the responses are so far removed from the word choice. Is this just the way my computer is set up? Or does it appear like this for others, also. And if it is just my computer, do you, or anyone, know how I can remedy the situation.
Just a suggestion and/or a request. |

I think the Word of the Day needs to be started anew each day, rather than putting it on the same thread. It becomes quite muddled and is difficult to navigate. I've seen three or four words being tossed around on this same thread. Maybe a new category, like the introductions page, is in order? |

I'm lovin' today's word. Knowledge is power.
I love languages and words and their meanings intrigue me. Especially when a word means two different things in different cultures/countries. I'm a writer at heart so I was always a word nerd. Before Cookie came along, however, people just called me a nerd. |

For those of us who grew up with an extensive vocab, this idea is a magnanimous gesture! I, for one, am tired of having to talk down to the general public so that JohnQ can understand what I'm saying! ( My mom was declared "The Walking Encyclopedia" as the validictorian for her senior class at a prestigious midwest university. Consequently, my introduction to language was high-brow verbage. However, it was never viewed as "Nerdy" because she was also anything but a four-eyed bookworm, she was gorgeous, and became an accomplished pianist! Any hooo... thanks for the attempt to polish the utterances of the masses! (Now, if we could just get them to use these lofty communicatives in proper context....ahhh well....I'll save that for still another day!:) Just wanted to say that I love your sig, it made me giggle. I grew up with a mother who was an English major and always made sure we used words properly. I learned to always have a dictionary by my side when I read a book so I could immediately look up words I didn't know. I'm quite grateful for it now. And as for your comment on using "lofty communicatives in proper context"...AMEN! It's a pet peeve of mine, but also amuses me no end when people use big words because they think it makes them look smart, but they use them incorrectly. Thank you, David Cook, for bringing an appreciation for our language back to the people. |

I've seen three or four words being tossed around on this same thread. Maybe a new category, like the introductions page, is in order? Yes I agree! I actually got confused the 1st time I browsed yesterday. Since each day will have a different word-of-the-day, then it should be in a separate daily thread. But kudos to Travis for bringing up this idea. Very nice. Makes it more worthwhile becoming a DC Fan because you got to learn at the same time. Cooooooool |
