American Idol Winner David Cook Teams With Grammy Winning Producer Rob Cavallo on Debut Album Due Out in Fall 2008

NEW YORK, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- American Idol winner David Cook has teamed up with Grammy winning producer Rob Cavallo on his debut album for 19 Recordings/RCA Records, due out this fall.

Cavallo, best known for his work with the legendary pop-punk band Green Day, has also produced records for superstar artists such as Kid Rock, Eric Clapton, My Chemical Romance, Goo Goo Dolls, and is working with the Dave Matthews Band on an upcoming release.

Cook has been busy in the studio when not on the road with the American Idols Live tour, co-writing many of the upcoming album tracks alongside some of music's hottest rock songwriters.

Earlier this summer Cook set the record for the most new entries by an artist in the 50-year history of the Hot 100, with 11 songs entering the chart dated June 7, 2008. That broke the record of six new entries in one week. Cook's 11 songs were led by "The Time of My Life," which debuted at No. 3, making it the highest new entry of 2008. "The Time of My Life" debuted at No 1 on two other charts, the Hot Digital Songs and the Hot Digital Tracks.

25 year-old David Cook hails from Blue Springs, Missouri.

Thanks, Pam. It does sound like old news....at least to us...but I'm always glad to see it out there. I'm so looking forward to the release of that CD.

Yeah, it might seem like old news to us. But for people who are not really Cook fans..they might be interested in his album because of Rob Cavallo producing it..

It's always nice seeing articles of David popping up..(even if it's old news/repetitive)

Thanks for posting Pam08!

Your welcome. Glad to see some "positive" response in here. I posted that link at mj's blog and well, one of the so called fans decided to post some more old fashioned handwringing with the Taylor/Blake stuff. I know I can't say it there, but I would have loved to have told her, GET OVER IT! laugh.gif

I probably would have. Glad I don't go over there. laugh.gif Not sure why there is all the handwringing.
Wondering how that shows any kind of support.

Okay, it's not anything we didn't already know, but it's nice that RCA puts out a press release to get the word out. I wonder if they are going to repeat the Billboard records stuff in every single press release, though smile.gif

As far as the Grammys go, it's better to give it more time. Daughtry got horrible reviews, but because the album sold well and there was more than one single out there he still got nominated. There will have to be some time for Cookie to get established if he has even a prayer with this sort of thing.

OK, an official press release from RCA that repeats the Billboard chart feats and some people are still convinced that 19/RCA hates him? I know I've done more than my share of handwringing, but one does have the draw the line somewhere. Even I occasionally allow logic to enter into the equation.

RCA/Cook's genre just works differently than Jive/Archie's genre. Daughtry didn't get a single out until late September at the earliest so we were never going to have something months and months ahead of time.

yes, it is information we know - but what makes this special is that it is an official press release -
cookiedough87
Yeah, the Grammys are the first thing I thought about when they gave us the estimated date release...fall of 08...and I was bummed because we'll have to wait well over a year for any nominations headed David's way at the Grammys...

I hope that this does reel in some outside fans since David has a lot of control and he's working with so many great artists and now a well-known producer...

I'm sure we will have some grammys coming his way no matter when, considering the producer, the vocals and the people he is working with, he will follow Kelly and Carrie's path.

Pam, I didn't find anything wrong with the post at MJ's. Realistically it is true you can have the best producer and all the promo in the world and still not sell like gangbustas. I thought the poster was just pointing out a simple fact and wasn't handwringing. The posts that make me roll my eyes out of my head are the ones that predict: RCA hates him, RCA and 19 are through with him, he will get no single, he will get a weeks worth of promo and then they will kick him to the curb, his airplay for TOML will start plummeting, basically every worst case scenario possible rolleyes.gif

It's good that RCA sent something official out over the wires because that's when news starts spreading more mainstream. E online has a blurb up too now.

ETA an MTV article too

Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Eric Clapton … David Cook? That’s what Grammy-winning producer Rob Cavallo’s résumé will look like soon. The man who helped make American Idiot and The Black Parade modern classics is dipping his toes into the “American Idol” pool, signaling one of two things: Either Cook is the real deal, or, well, a gig’s a gig.

There are some interesting tidbits from those two media articles.

From MTV (I'll cut out the snottiness):

Cook is co-writing the majority of the songs on the album, with professional help from Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace, Chantal Kreviazuk, the Nixons’ Zac Maloy and Ed Roland of Collective Soul, among others.

I haven't heard her mentioned before. She is Raine's wife but has experience writing for other people and is a musician herself, of course. I believe she has done some work for Kelly Clarkson.

I still hope we get a joint Cook/Jason Wade song on the album, though! Jason is writing with Chris Daughtry right now, too.

From E! Online:

While no specific release date, save for the month, has been announced for Cook's debut, what is for sure is that this fall will mark yet another battle of the Davids, with Cook and Idol runner-up David Archuleta expected to drop their albums on the same day.

Hmmm. I had a feeling that 11/4 release date for Archie wasn't set in stone. It's Cluben 2.0! 19 knows how to play *that* game.

Is this a good idea? I mean, just the thought of DC not beating Archie in sales will be a great disappointment for an Idol winner - and bring back the discussion Nigel rigged the show.

Well, until we get an official announcement from their record labels, no one knows for sure when the albums will drop. I don't troll for Archie news but if there was an official anything from Jive I'm sure it would have come up by now.

Until that point, I wouldn't believe anything I hear from the Archie crowd about them outselling Cookie. We will see what happens.

i love chantal....i first heard of her when she sang that leavin' on a jet plane song for the armageddon soundtrack. and i especially love "feels like home". i'm looking forward to their collaboration.

BTW... did David get to choose Rob Cavallo or did 19/RCA hire him to be the producer?

To be honest. We all knew there was a possibility that the 11/4 date for Archie was not set in stone and may I ask this, WHY ARE WE BRINGING THAT UP AGAIN especially in this thread? This thread is not about Archie's release. They are 2 different artists, 2 different genres. It's really like comparing apples to oranges.

Plus, that 11/11 date for both isn't written in stone for either one of them. It's nothing to get worked up over IMO. Can we let go of the paranoia please?

I didn't know that bringing up extra information about the release dates printed in the articles counted as paranoia. The information came up in an article based on the press release. That's why I pointed it out.

I asked the Archie fans in the other threads why they were so sure that his album coming out on 11/4 when Archie and his dad had said shortly after that info came out that they weren't sure of an album release. They didn't respond.
So I'll take an update from E! here. I don't know if they have any inside info or not. I'm just repeating what they said.

ETA: Noted, Pam.

chose to bring that up or report that information, so I don't need to be yelled at because I choose to repeat it.

Anyway, I asked the Archie fans in the other threads why they were so sure that Archie's album would definitely come out on 11/4 and I never got a response.

Ok, I'll put this a little differently, since that subject has caused a lot of heated feelings among some in the fanbase and has caused such paranoia, that was why I hate to see things like that brought up when some people are so paranoid as it is. Sorry, if that came out the wrong way

You never got a response because they aren't sure. Three different dates are now being tossed around for his release date which means no one knows.
annie702
annette, pam...thanks smile.gif i love him, too.
Off the chain

Glad to see how they positioned him.
  1. Rob Cavallo's best work with massively critically appraised artists (Eric Clapton = icon, Green Day = American Idiot was spectacular, My Chemical Romance = underground cult fave, DMB = established touring band who are respected and wildly successful despite receiving relatively little airplay on Top 40 radio formats)
  2. He's co-writing most of his material or collaborating with big names (street cred as a full flavored musician, and one whom big names respect enough to work with)
  3. Reminded peeps of the dl records set right after his win
I don't need to be marketed to, I already luv him, but this is nice timing.

I agree, let's not speculate. And remember, they're in different genres. And let's see how "Crush" does this week, and by the end of this month. That can be a real indicator of how Archie sells. Remember, Cookie had just under 1,000,000 itunes downloads the week of AI's conclusion, with nearly a quarter million for TOML. All of Archies downloads totaled like 300,000. I don't think things have changed since then. Cookie is a potential chart buster.
trickortreat
I think David has proved his marketability, Archie hasn't, so I think they are pushing him more than David. David is going to sell worldwide, not just here in the US, he is already huge in some countries and hasn't released a CD yet. TPTB know what they have in David, of that I have no doubt. I listen to WPLJ out of New York on my computer at work because they play TOML. They were discussing David and mentioned that his CD is highly anticipated. So if industry people are thinking this way, I don't think David will have any trouble selling CD's, I want him to sell tons so he can continue to entertain me.
