It’s confirmed, from the Hollywood Reporter:

QUOTE
Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is leaving the most popular show on television, Fox’s “American Idol.”

Confirming online reports, “Idol” production company 19 Entertainment, where Lythgoe serves as president, released a statement Monday announcing Lythgoe was stepping down from his duties on the show.

“Due to the huge success of ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ my summer will be taken up by travels to South Africa, Australia and Canada to work on local versions of the show,” Lythgoe said. “I will step back from my day-to-day producing work on ‘American Idol’ and will be devoting my time to a new venture with Simon Fuller.”

19 Entertainment denied “online rumors” that Lythgoe was leaving the company. “Contrary to online rumors, producer Nigel Lythgoe is not leaving 19 Entertainment,” the statement said. Lythgoe will also continue to executive produce Fox’s summer hit “Dance,” which was recently renewed for a fifth season.

Despite the statement, Lythgoe’s future with 19 is far from clear. Lythgoe still holds his president title at 19, but the company confirmed he is negotiating a new joint venture with 19’s chief executive and fellow “Idol” executive producer Fuller. The company will continue producing “Idol” due to Fuller’s association with the show, but whether Lythgoe retains his producer credit has not yet been determined.

I'm actually really happy to hear that. Being that Nigel said David has no charisma, I don't really think he's qualified to produce the show anyway. I can't wait to see what changes they make to the show next year!

Bye Nigel! We'll miss you..

GOOD RIDDANCE, right?!!!
Maybe they'll remove some of the cheesy group performances at the show. Let's just wait and see!

You can slate Nigel all you want guys, but without him you wouldn't have idol... himself, Simon Fuller and Simon Cowell have done a hell of a lot for TV shows World Wide

Without his production skills, the show may suffer.

As for the 'cheesey group numbers' the show is watch primarily by children, thats why they do them in the states and not in the UK, our main age group for 'idol' is 16-24, so it runs very differently!

I'm with Polly on this one.

If it wern't for Nigel the Idol franchise that started back in 2000 probably wouldn't be as successful as it is!

Off the chain
No doubt Nigel was a driving force behind the inception of AI but Simon Fuller is the key guy.

I never watched before AI7 and may never watch again.

But I think production has become a well oiled machine so that will probably remain unaffected.

I do think Nigel has lost touch with the demographic of AI.

Targeted for the young ones but it's the Gen X and Baby Boomers who are actually voting the most and buying the music. IDGI.

Hmm not sure about that, but the 'X Factor' has changed a LOT, since it's 'Idol' day in the UK...I mean there is four groups, four judges who also act as mentors...

So top 3 from each of the four groups! And no group numbers!

Maybe he just likes the UK! wink.gif

I certainly called that one right, didn't I! Bad mouth your bosses #1 priority and hottest act... while your own show flounders, loses ratings and slips in demos, and that's what happens. I suppose Nigel never really bad mouthed David, but he criticized him (at least twice in interviews) in an area in which David excels.

I've already expressed my opinions elsewhere on this forum how I feel about Nigel so I won't rehash them again here. All I will add is this. As mentioned by others, AI has suffered in both ratings and demographics, which the executives at Fox are not too happy about. EW had an article which you can read here explaining how to fix AI. I strongly agree with points 3, 5, and 7 and strongly disagree with #2. Maybe with someone new at the helm they can start to make some of these changes.

I have no opinion on whether its good or bad that Nigel is gone from AI, however, the demographic for AI is not children. My children go to bed at 8:30pm, and the show lasts way past that, and the results show is on at 9pm. The demographic is clearly 15-60 with most of the voting going on in the 30+age group.

Ok Carolina, I don't live in the USA, so only go on what I hear through interviews and on websites.

Every show needs to progress, and AI allowing instruments this year was a BIG step! I would love to see the judges act more like mentors, as happen in the UK, as you feel as though the judges have more of a 'point' I guess!!

I have only this to say to Nigel: Have a nice life, and enjoy what you're doing after Idol.

There! Neither positivity nor negativity for this one. wink.gif

I'm with you on that, southpaw. smile.gif

Also, I agree with point 4 - seriously, what young aspiring singers need is time to grow and mature, before they start pursuing their superstar dreams. I never like to see kids pursuing their so-called dreams even before they have had a happy childhood. Once it gets to 'em, I ain't too sure how they are gonna handle fame.

I have really enjoyed Nigel's input on So You Think You Can Dance. Whatever he is working on, I certainly wish him well.

QUOTE
1. Tone down the product placement.

I agree with number 1, we had ad's in the UK, but before and after show, so just before or after commercial breaks...
QUOTE
2. Devise a dignified exit strategy for Paula and Randy.

Number 2- I see where they're coming from, they are meant to 'judge' give what they did right, what they did wrong and how to improve for the following week (basically like simon c)
QUOTE
3. Pick fewer — and fresher — ''mentors.''

The problem with this is, there aren't many current musicians who are musicians! Most of them don't write their own music...Or create their own arrangements! But I can see where they're coming from!
QUOTE
4. Raise the minimum contestant age to 18.

The UK lowered to 16 this year, and the 'kids' couldn't handle it. I tend to agree, before 18 your voice is still changing and the pressure is a lot.
QUOTE
5. Stop the medley madness!

I agree, I didn't watch one medley this year, I walked out the room! lol
QUOTE
6. The Delta Sigma Bimbo hand-waving mosh pit must go. Forever.

Why? I think it should have more men and variety in there, but why not!
QUOTE
7. Less talking, more singing.

I think they songs should be at least 2 minutes, but it's nice to see the personality. Again in the UK we have 'Xtra Factor' which is right after the show, seeing what happens in the house they live, interviews post performance, it just makes you feel like you know the contestants!
