David Archuleta Wants the "Miley Touch"

08/05/2008 5:00 PM, E! Online

David Archuleta's camp knows what works.

E! News has exclusively learned that the 17-year-old crooner is working on songs for his debut album with Rock Mafia Records, the Santa Monica-based tune factory behind the Miley Cyrus hits "7 Things" and "See You Again."

A source tells us that Jeff Archuleta, the little one's infamous father-manager (dadager, perhaps?), recently met with Rock Mafia producers Antonia Armato and Tim James, who cowrote and coproduced eight of the tracks on Cyrus' latest album, Breakout. They have also worked with Mariah Carey, Vanessa Hudgens and Aly & AJ.

Father and son came away from the powwow convinced that they should proceed "in that direction," our insider said. "They want a Miley touch to the album."
Well, Archuleta will certainly need a wealth of infectious pop to equal his Disney-driven forebear, especially now that his label has orchestrated a plan to have his freshman effort drop the same day as American Idol winner David Cook's debut, sometime in November.

Over the next two weeks, David A. will record at least two Rock Mafia-sanctioned songs that 19 Recordings and RCA Records are hoping could turn into hit singles, the source said.

"David knows he needs to have a big radio hit, and Miley's producers are the closest thing he can get to a guarantee."

As huge as Miley Cyrus has been, I can understand them taking that direction. Not that I would enjoy the music, but I can certainly understand their reasoning.

Thanks for contributing to the death of music as we know it, Archie! LOL.

Yeah, no surprise here, although I think the article is suspect: Archie is *not* on RCA (Cook is), it makes no sense that Dadcheluta would be the one to make these negotiations (there are people at Jive who are in charge of that), and at this point I think E! is so wedded to the idea of a same-day release that they'll write anything to boost that theory, even though they probably made it up in the first place.

LOL, i thought the same thing laugh.gif ...but i knew they we're going to commercialize him into this whole "bubblegum" pop/ Disney 'hearthrob' (didn't we all rolleyes.gif )

....its just a matter of time before he winds up being Zac Effron's replacement in the next "High School Musical" installment blink.gif

Yeah, I can understand it, but it was the one thing I really hoped they wouldn't do with Archie. I'd far rather they'd gone down a 'proper musician' route then the easy path - maybe a young Josh Grobin/Michael Buble (sp) sort of thing (not my thing, but extremly popular). Archie has a fantastic voice, not entirely my cup of tea, but there's no denying his talent - there's a very big danger of him being this years tween/teen heartthrob, then they grow up and move on, and the next generation will have a whole new hero to focus on, leaving Archie in danger of being cut adrift. Going down a different path, albeit with less initial sales, could have established him as a 'proper singer' with much wider appeal allowing him to grow and mature, as his fanbase grows and matures.

I've seen it happen time and time again with this years teen heartthrob, very few make it past that and establish credible, long term careers.

Right on the money - its too bad Archie didn't wait a few years before doing Idol - he'd have a much stronger sense of who he is/wants to be musically, as opposed to trying for short term financial success (ala his big bro, DC).

I think this would be perfect for Archie and his fans. The younger set adore this kind of music and lets face it, most of his fans are the tweens and teens.

I've always said that we are going to see a Disney show staring Archie!

That's my problem with it, the younger set grown pretty quickly and move on, the next lot coming up will be idolising someone different. It's perfect for Archie in the short term, but in the long term he's going to have a stigma of being a Disney singer attached to him and it's going to be very difficult for him to mature as an artist, widen his fanbase and gain critical respect for his work - very, very few of these types achieve any sort of long term success. That's okay for some, but I honestly feel Archie is potentially way better then this, it's the easy path for him, not necessarily the best one.

This is true, but I don't think they are looking toward the long term aspect of his career.

They see a teen idol and are going to capitolize on that.

Listen to the interview HERE. I would say after listening to this to take the Miley stuff with a grain of salt.

For this one, I have absolutely no further comments, except I had seen this coming.

Like Krycek had said, it's an easy path, but not necessarily the best one. I don't think it will justify Archie's potential and music career in the long run.

Nevertheless, I wish him the best.

It's definitely closer to what he did on the show. I suspect it's what Archie would rather be doing anyway. Instead he's being forced to heed the apocalypse. No shocker there, but I think he can kiss his artistic credibility goodbye.

At any rate, as long as Miley's people stay far away from David Cook, that's ALL that matters.

You said it all!
