QUOTE
NEW YORK -- American Idol winner David Cook took batting practice with the Mets today before their game against the San Diego Padres, and ripped a couple nice hits to right-center field while batting lefthanded under the watchful eye of David Wright.

Cook, 25, who also threw out the first pitch, has the exact same birthday as Wright -- Dec. 20, 1982. He grew up playing Legion baseball in Blue Springs, Mo., and was a fan of the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs.

In fact, Cook was wearing a Chiefs baseball cap -- signed by, of all people, former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly and former Devils defenseman Ken Daneyko -- when he hit the field. The Mets promptly gave him a Mets hat.

I am a Kansas City sports fan, but I'm a baseball fan, more than anything,'' Cook said. ``To be able to come to Shea, with all the history and the fact there's going to be a new stadium next season, is really cool.''

Cook, whose baseball heroes include George Brett, Buck O'Neil, and Frank White, is currently touring the tri-state area and working on a record he hopes will be released by the end of November. The exposure gained by becoming the latest American Idol is priceless.

I couldn't buy this before, it's huge to be out here,'' Cook said. ``I'm serious about music, but I'm trying to have fun.''

Cook was joined at BP by Carly Smithson, an American Idol Top 10 finalist. The two are expected to lead the Shea Stadium crowd in ``Take Me Out to the Ball Game'' later this afternoon.

This is very cool! He is the definition of "living the dream!" Way to go David!

WOW - What a wonderful opportunity for David to be at Shea Stadium, participate in batting practice, sing take me out to the ball game later this afternoon with Carley WOW. It is a gorgeous day here in NJ/NY - so glad that DC and Carley are doing this on this day off.

I hope someone captures the video of Carley and David later.

DAVID IS HAVING A BALL - HE LOOKS LIKE SUCH A NATURAL OUT THERE.

BOO, mets.

Aw, how fun! YAY! I'm glad he's having some down time!

Yes, need video, for sure!

And I know I poke fun at him all the time for how bent he wears his caps, but looking at that pic with the unformed, not-quite-perfect bill, I much prefer the David Cook-over-bent bills. That unformed cap kinda looks, well, maybe just a tad bit dorky. (But I still love him; you know I do.)

Don't know if these have been posted yet but I found more photos here: http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/mlb/gallery

Thanks to my Mets blogger friend!

He sure is ... yay for David!!!

Okay, so I'm a Chicago Cubs fan myself, but David looks so adorable in his Mets gear! laugh.gif

His hat is barely on and his bangs are in his face so he looks like a little boy!

He does look like hes having a great time, good for him. I dont know how he keeps up the pace. He left Albany last night by limo, went all the way back to NYC (is that where Shea stadium is?), probably got a few hours sleep and then was back at it early this morning. Me, I came home from the concert and slept til noon.

WHAT A MAN!!!!
widz
I was gonna post that..laugh.gif
thanks for posting anyway, trina !

I love the fact that he always acknowledges his hometown teams, whether it's through a statement or the hat he's wearing, and that he's still so humble about the opportunities his new celebrity gives him. He seems like a kid in the proverbial candy shop. biggrin.gif

I'm watching the game, its bottom of the 4th now, not sure if I'm gonna get a chance to see them at the 7th inning stretch since they usually break for commerical while they do that kind of thing.. hopefully it gets uploaded via youtube later!

btw he looks great in uniform, he would have been such a hot ball player.

This is so cool. I'm gonna go on mlb.com and see if the Mets have anything about this up yet. Wish I could have seen him and Carly singing. I just turned on the game (yep, we have the baseball package on cable, so we can see the Mets here in AZ) and it's already the 4th. Oh well. Maybe there will be a clip up on some news show. tongue.gif

I agree with the 'kid in the candy shop' observation! It's fun to watch. For some reason, the red in his hair is more obvious in these shots than in some.

I'm always so happy to hear that he's getting to do these kinds of things that must be a thrill for him, because he so deserves it. Not surprised to hear that he had a few nice hits to right-center field because we know that he's good at everything, right? Cool that he gets to hang out with his buddy, Carly! Hope to see the footage.

David with the Mets?!

My favorite team and my favorite man.

Did he get another haircut? His hair looks short... or maybe its just hat hair laugh.gif

So did anyone else notice he's labeled as David Cool when you go to that page? A Freudian slip, perhaps?

I also found this article about it, hope I'm doing this right, as I've not tried to post a link before:

I love the caption under the picture of DC and David Wright (It's a new duo of Davids with Wright subbing in for Archuleta!)

In regards to David Cool - well he is "Cool" I am so happy that he is doing this today - what a great break.

What a great perk! He looks so happy. Glad Carly got in on some of the action, too.

I'm sure he felt much more at home there than the TCAS!

Okay so... I live in a country where pretty much the only game people give a damn about is football! I don't know the first thing about baseball (other than I think its like rounders!!) I do know this though.... I think its great to see DC having fun, relaxing and enjoying himself. biggrin.gif

Nothing yet,
but I did find this one from the Royals game from May, I'm sure it's been on here before but I hadn't seen it so I figured it would tide some of you BB fans over until we find the Mets one...

http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp

type "David Cook" in the search, it should be the first one on the strip...
*~word nerd ~*
heheh. . that doesn't get old for me!!! I love that, I can't wait to hear him and Carly doing it together!

those pictures are so cute!
Melrose
I was there!! And it was all a complete surprise smile.gif

I went to the game today with my summer camp, and my brother went to the game as well with his friends. As we're on the bus, just about to unload the kids, he sends me a text, and it reads "OMG David Cook!" Right away, my heart stops beating and my hands are trembling as I call him. He tells me that David threw out the first pitch, and that it was a wild ball (which means it was no where near the catcher). I started to cry and my kids started to laugh at me, and now I was in a funk.

So now, the seventh inning strech rolls around, and I see the big American Idol logo on the screens. I leap to my feet, and I see David and Carly standing with Mr. Met on top of the Mets dugout, and they sing 'Take Me Out to The Ballgame' together. David had his own custom jersey, number 0, and Carly's number was 21. They were both holding up a Johns jersey which had the number 5. After they sing the song, they throw some free t-shirts out to the crowd, and they go back to their seats, which were among everyone elses.

He was in clear sight from me, although I was three levels away, and for the end of the seventh until the end of the eighth (when he left) I watched him sign countless autographs and talk to fans, as well as have a conversation with Carly. He also seemed really into the game, standing up to cheer and applaud on numerous occasions. When he left at the bottom of the eigth inning, he was shaking hands with the people around him as security escorted them out of the stadium.

I'm pretty much the only girl who goes to work and sees David so unexpectedly laugh.gif
Strutting Beatle
Melrose, you are the only girl who sees David at her work.

Cause If i saw David at michael's buying some stickers..or some paint...

I'd be like "dfsodxf?"
annette
Melrose: What a great story and so unexpected....How exciting that must have been for you. It sounds like him and Carley had a great day at Shea.

I really hope that there will be pictures and video with Carley, David and Mr. Met.

Back to the article - it is so neat that DC and David Wright share the exact same birthday.

Thanks! It was pretty exciting! I took a picture on my phone, but you really can't see too much. I'm sending it to my computer, so if I can zoom it in and get it clear enough, I'll post it.

Nice going Melrose. Man NY has my two favorites today, Elliott Yamin is doing a concert at Playland in Rye, NY. Darn it, I've missed him.

Well I get to see David next week in DC. Yeah!
Melrose

If I can figure how to get the larger sized version off of the Verizon Pix Place website, I'll post it as well. Sorry the quality kinda sucks, but it's something, I guess.

Anyone know how?
Jetergirl
bah.

He's a Royals fan. Hates the Yankees (me and him would have a sexy rivalry going), but thats cool hes taking batting practice in Shea. Crappy ballpark though. Seriously. Good riddens.
