"American Idol" winner David Cook is continuing to enjoy the perks his big win brings -- he threw out the first pitch today at a New York Mets game.

"I'm a huge sports fan, a big baseball fan and so to be able to do anything like this is always really cool," Cook, who was sporting a beard, said of the experience.

David Cook was invited to Shea Stadium by Mets third baseman David Wright, who founded the David Wright Foundation. Cook said, "David [Wright] actually reached out to me towards the end of the ["American Idol"] season, really wanted to try to help out to get my older brother out to the finale and stuff, really reached out and he was cool, and then reached out very recently to invite me out today."

Cook's older brother has been battling a brain tumor.

And another interesting tidbit: David Cook & David Wright were born on exactly the same day: Dec. 20, 1982 ohmy.gif

That's so cool. It was a really nice and considerate gesture of him.

On a side note - why does everyone's birthday seem to be Dec 20? That's weird.

That is so sweet that they have become good friends!
I bet they will stay in contact for a long time!!

Does anyone know about his foundation? Does it support the fight against cancer?
Wow, what a coincidence that they were born on the same day!
trinachick1
DW's foundation is for Multiple Sclerosis. After hearing about what he did for the Cook family I feel like I want to donate something to his foundation now.

trinachick1 - I did not realize that DW's foundation is for MS. I used to work with someone with advanced stages of MS and I have a dear friend with stage 1.

BTW - did any one see ET tonight - the segment on Annette Funnicello - what a shame - she is stage 4 MS.

I didn't know who was David W (european fan here tongue.gif ) but I love him already.
How nice they are both Davids and bornt in the same day and year?

I feel like donating too. What if we all do something together and donate in name of David and his fans? even it's not a huge ammount. I dunno... but this guy just seems to be really amazing (and quite sexy btw)
Stacey81
That's so awesome. Yay for DW!

I'm a huge Mets fan - I think I've just died and gone to heaven! This is my ultimate D-squared!

Another heartwarming story involving our David, but of course, we aren't surprised! It seems like DC just makes everyone around him want to be a better person, even if they are already a great person!

My bf is a huge Mets fan so through him, I knew about DW (and all his hotness!), not to mention he's a damn good ball player! Learning that he's one of those amazing athletes that has a cause he's invested in is awesome!

Go Davids!!
Cookiessugarmama
Man, David's got a great swing! His follow through looks perfect. I hope they do become good friends. David's own innate kindness and compassion draws other people to him like that.

David did not say David Wright was responsible for flying Adam to the finale. This is not true. What he said was that David Wright "really wanted to try to help" Adam get to the finale. I can see why the OP would draw this conclusion that David Wright donated a lot of money, but it's not true. Fans donated ALL the money that came in. $9,215 of the $24,000 that was raised came from an ebay auction of 3 pairs of Springsteen tickets that had pre-show passes donated by Maureen and Steven Van Zandt.

David Wright offered to fly Adam to California. I really wanted David Wright's flight offer to be accepted more than all the other offers that came in, but it wasn't. I would've known if this were the case (please read below).

There were 4 plane offers that came through the fund I started, and they weren't utilized. It is still a mystery as to who actually flew Adam to Los Angeles for the finale.

I posted this elsewhere on this board earlier today and on the American Idol board and the Word Nerds Home:

"All this time I have kept this information confidential because I thought that was what David Wright (and David Cook) wanted. Now that David has spoken about it, I figure it's okay.

I called the NY Daily News to ask them if they would help raise money to fly Adam to the finale, and the next day they printed a short mention of the fund with the website I created (helpbringadamback.com) on their Gossip page. The same day, David Wright called Vickie Wallace at the bank in Terre Haute and said he would personally pay for Adam's special flight. He saw the piece in the Daily News and went to the website and got the information and called Vickie Wallace.

I got a lot of emails the day that the NY Daily News printed the story but David Wright's story was the most touching, to be sure.

Vickie Wallace told me that David Wright said his brother was at Virginia Tech during the sniper massacre and that for awhile that day, he couldn't reach his brother and feared the worst, but thankfully he wasn't one of the people who were shot. Vickie said because David Wright loves his brother so much and because of the experience at Virginia Tech when he feared he might lose him, he felt he understood the bond between David and Adam, and that's why he wanted to help David and Adam be together at the finale.

I still don't know who flew Adam to Los Angeles, but all that matters is that he got there!

A little bit of trivia: David Wright and David Cook share the exact same birthday!"

David Wright's foundation mission has changed, it is now all about kids. It is: THE MISSION OF THE DAVID WRIGHT FOUNDATION IS TO PROVIDE AID AND ASSISTANCE TOWARD THE HEALTH, EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN IN NEED. THROUGH PROGRAMS AND ANNUAL EVENTS, THE DWF STRIVES TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR CHILDREN OF THE NEW YORK TRI-STATE, AND NORFOLK, VA METRO AREAS. I'm from NYC so I know they do tons of cool stuff like give 30 tickets,t-shirt and Mets money to every Mets home game, a bowling event for 200 kids from Charities, a baseball clinic with David and coaches on the field at Shea for 75 kids from charities, and they are starting libraries at city hospital ( for kids that might not be able to afford the stuff to bring) of gameboys, PSPs, DVD/CD players, Ipods and tons of games, movies and stuff. He and Cookie are both awesome ( and super cute). They also started a scholarship at Virginia Tech for one student for four years fover... and I read they do it ALL for free and rely on donations and a gala in November 13th this yr in NYC, rumor is Cookie might play this year so we gotta buy, buy, buy and donate!!!! I also read they are making a new super cool website that will be up in a couple of weeks (I'm sure with pictures of our Cookie) www.davidwright.com and you can donate on there and see if Cookie will be at the gala so we can buy tickets. We should support a great guy that supports Cookie!

i agree - I think this is the new David x 2 - they do have so much in common - share the exact same birthday, the love for sports, music, know what's important in the world - I agree, very impressive for 25 years.

NY loves Cook
I live in NY. David Wright is the greatest. Now that we know he and Cookie are friends and he did nice things for Cookie, we should support his charity too. They do amazing things for sick kids and kids disadvantaged kids, it is in the paper a lot. It was in The Post that he will have a brand new website in a couple of weeks www.davidwright.com. We should check it out and see if there is Cookie Stuff on it!
