Big news about the American Cancer Society benefit at the Power & Light District on Saturday, August 30 from 3 - 5 pm.

We are so pleased to share with you all that our headlining entertainment is fresh from the same Oklahoma music scene as David, Andy & Neal/DR . . .

Nick and his band, The Can't Hardly Playboys, have their own sound – a unique blend of country music mixed with a rock and a little blues that has made them one of the most popular local artists in the Midwest, hitting the local scene in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri and Arkansas hard. (Sound familiar to anyone else?)

This past May, Nick Gibson & the guys won Kenny Chesney's Next Big Star contest and opened for Kenny Chesney & LeAnn Rimes at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City!
Remember how David has said that his dream was to play at the Sprint Center? Well, Nick's was to play the stage at the Ford Center. Kinda sweet that these two friends' musical dreams are both coming true this summer.

Nick's debut album, "No Other Way," featuring the title track and their latest single "Whiskey Holler" was released earlier this year and is available on iTunes!

Please check it out and let's show Nick some love! Stop by his MySpace page, let him know we sent you, and please thank him for his support of our fight against cancer! We're very grateful to Nick & the guys for coming to town specifically to support this event.

Lots more 'inside scoop' coming your way . . . including where you've already heard Nick's work (hint: if you're listening to some of the Axium and MWK stuff, guess what!)
AnnieD
This really exciting news. Can't wait.
BLake
Did we forget to mention that you already know Nick’s work if you’re listening to David’s pre-Idol work?
Ooops, we almost forgot to tell you that you’re already familiar with some of Nick’s work, if you’re listening to Axium and Midwest Kings! To connect the dots for you. . .

  • Nick was the guitar tech for MWK for 3+ years.
  • When DR broke his hand (ages ago), Nick actually took to the stage to play for Neal, which to this day, Nick considers a huge honor. (He lists Neal/DR as one of his top musical influences.)
  • Nick began playing shows on his own and set forth on his own musical journey not long after MWK gave him a chance to play a solo gig. (YAY for double-booking!)
  • If you’re listening to MWK, you’ve heard Nick on Midwest Kings’ latest EP, Luna Despierta. (That’s Nick on the harmonies on “Stuck Under Wheels”.)

And there is one more unbelievable, full-circle story that will connect the final dot for you. When Nick told me the story on the phone this past weekend, I was stunned. Speechless.

Wanna hear it?
mauilady12
Oh yes, please do tell!
BLake
Hmmmm . . . nope, not enough yet. This is a HUGE moment. I mean, it will BLOW YOUR MIND when you hear the back-story here.

So, taking a page from Mr. Cook's book, this is me with my hand to my ear: Who wants the back-story behind this unbelievable-breathtaking moment that's gonna happen now that Nick is playing at our event?!

But I'll give you something else instead:
Why would a band come all the way to Kansas City for an American Cancer Society benefit?
When we told him how much you've done to support the cause that is so close to David's heart, he was more than a little surprised that you all have raised $17K+ in just over 50 days. (He asked if Dave knew about all you have been able to accomplish and was so complimentary of your efforts, how much it would mean to David.) Nick knows that the Kansas City event is a huge opportunity to raise some essential dollars to help in the fight against cancer, and he wants to do his part.

And here's what he said to me personally after I told him I was a cancer survivor . . .
QUOTE
It seems like cancer touches nearly everyone’s life in one way or another. My mother is a cancer survivor, and a couple years ago we lost her mother, my grandmother, to cancer, so I am very honored to support the mission of the American Cancer Society at the Cook Fans Unite to Fight benefit."

Yup, like attracts like. smile.gif
LuvHotCookies
Checked out his Myspace and he's got a great sound. His schedule lists an American Cancer Society Benefit for August 30. Is that the same event? It's cool that American Cancer Society is getting publicity for this event.

Yes, that is the same event. He had it listed before we announced it to all of you!

Kansas City media is also being SUPER to us. Hope to see lots of coverage (and lots of teams signing up to raise money since they have a chance to win 2 tickets and 2 passes to the after-show party personally donated by David himself).

Hmmm . . . guess no one wants to hear THE MOST AMAZING FULL-CIRCLE MOMENT STORY afterall. And this goes WAY back to our David back in the studio with Axium. Serious inside story here. . . Anyone?

QUOTE (redemptionyouburnfrom @ Aug 19 2008, 07:00 PM) *
Awww, Nick ftw!

Dude, thata man can wail on the guitar! I mean, I guess I shouldn't be surprised considering his company, but WOW!

I know! SERIOUSLY, right? Can you even imagine David, Neal and Nick in the same space together, playing guitar?! whoa.

Oh, btw, Nick did win Electric Guitarist of the Year in the Payne County Line Oklahoma Music Awards.

K, I'll keep the story about being in the studio, recording one of Axium's discs to myself then . . . hee hee hee hee. If you wanna hear it, you gotta show Nick some love and props. C'mon now..... (I am absolutely serious when I tell you that this story stopped me dead in my tracks. I couldn't believe the coincidence of the backstory here, with David & Nick in the studio, and Nick agreeing to play at this American Cancer Society benefit for us.)
mauilady12
You are such a TEASE!!!! Please tell us more. I will be there and can hardly wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just went to his MYSpace---he is awesome. The show is going to be great. Back-story, PLEASE!!!

This news makes my decision to fly in for this event SO WORTH IT!!! Well, it was worth if before but this is seriously the icing on an already perfect cake! I CAN'T WAIT!!! Having Nick supporting our event is seriously a huge deal and we hope to see SO MANY of you there!!!

WE ARE MORE THAN READY!!!! FLYING IN FROM TAMPA, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BLake
Wow, now I'm feelin' pressure . . .

OK, so Nick is performing at our American Cancer Society benefit, right? Guess which Axium song David asked him to perform on . . . (and we hear Nick's music every time we listen to it!)

*chills*

Any guesses?
mauilady12
My guess is AC or BALANCE

If it's AC I think I'll cry...

DITTO!
BLake
Yes. Nick plays on AC.

They were in the studio, and Nick happened to be there. And David asked Nick to come in and play something. Something that would be very clean, very uncomplicated. So, Nick laid it down, and that's what we hear in the song today -- with Jeff's amazing harmonies over top.

And with that, you now know the full-circle moment.

And I am . . . continually amazed by this group of friends. Just such big hearts. (And oh yeah, amazingly talented artists, too!)

(I do have one more story to tell you . . . but maybe I'll save that. wink.gif)

I just listened to Nick - I am in love - this took me back to my southern rock days....Commander Cody and all - I want to come to KC..

Annette, yes, it is. It's off their last disc, "The Story Thus Far," which I think might still be available for download (legally). I got mine at Walmart's MP3 download center.

The lyrics are. . . .just . . . . raw, and the music is so pure that it adds to David's obvious emotion he was working through in the song. Just . . . yeah.

So, who else wants to come to Kansas City now?! biggrin.gif

The event is definitely 3-5 pm now. Where does it still say 11-2? I've gotten PMs today with the same confuzzled reaction.

We need to track that down and get in touch with mods or original poster to update it. Thanks!
