I agree Marie. Didn't Simon say something to someone about one of the songs being a bestseller or #1 in Norway and then he said that he didn't like the song? Paula was quick to point that out so comments could very well be scripted or at least somewhat predetermined. I also agree about the twist; the lowest vote getter will go home and the remaining two will sing for their lives.

I heard that like the French version Nouvelle Star, the judges are going to be allowed one veto for the season. That is, if they like someone the fans have voted "off", they can veto it and the person gets to stay. They can only do this once. I think this is a bad idea and counter productive to the idea of the show-that the fans get to choose the next American Idol.

I'm not sure it's such a horrid idea. Because if the fans voted honestly, without the influence of spamming sites like VFTW, then we wouldn't have lost Daughtry so early and Sanjaya wouldn't have gone on so long. But I really do wish the judges would at least make a pretense of impartiality. It's so blatant this year it's ridiculous.

Interesting to read everyone's comments!! smile.gif I agree with what most everyone has said about Adam...he certainly is polished/makes ytou look at his perfomance, but I just can't figure out if I like him, or if he annoys me!! smile.gif Have been on the fence all season about him.

Thought Lil, Danny, Michael, and Matt all had good nights, Alexis too although not as good as her previous performance with that bluesy song. HATE MEGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!! but Simon is obviously in love with her...wish he would just ask her to marry him so i don't have to look at her on Idol every week. ;-) Jorge, Anoop, Kris, Allison are all just meh to me. Allison can kinda sing, for sure, but I am not crazy about her voice, and find her personality quite annoying. I like Scott and Jasmine, but don't see them advancing to Top 4 or anything like that.

Can't wait to see the big twist -- sounds like you all have insider info on the judges choice thing! So will be intersting to see hopw that all pans out.

I'm afraid to say that Adam was my favourite performance from that first round and I don't even LIKE Adam. laugh.gif I like Anoop but he didn't deliver.

I REALLY REALLY do not like the judges picking their faves so early on. Its almost like Danny and Adam can do no wrong. It puts me off when the judges go over the top in their praise and I feel like its their opinion being forced on the audience. I think the TWIST in the rules is that the judges will have more say in who goes home which completely goes against the whole premise of the show.

I concur all around.

The favorite-picking and contestant-pimping is sooo obvious this year. It's ridiculous. Kara is also annoying me. She thinks like a corporate shill and, if we wanted that, we'd watch TRL or VH1 or something.

Half the time, I listen to what they say and wonder what the hell I just watched. Ugh!

ok, ryan just explained that new rule and ..... tax laws are less complicated!

wtf?! rolleyes.gif

how cute was that when matt g got up to go down to the bottom 2. awwww.

the contestants all seem to like each other so much this year!!

Jasmine and Jorge were eliminated.

I think I have this right...The twist is that the judges now have a "save". They can let 1 person stay if they get voted off. But only between now and the top 5 and only 1 save per season. If they use the save, the following week, 2 will be voted off.
Grandmajoyce
You're right Mary. They have one "save" for the season. Let's hope they use it wisely. To bad they didn't have it when Chris Daughtry was on. I think that we would have had quite a different out come if they did.

Ok, he must not have made an impression on me because when they announced Jorge I had no idea who he was! rolleyes.gif

Still not feeling Adam.

Guys, I know there had been rumors going around that DC was going to be performing on the show next Wednesday, but apparently that isn't the case. Just saw this post at mj's. One of the posters there posted a portion of the newsletter they received in an email. Apparently next week will be country week and Carrie will be performing on Wednesday.

Grand Ole Opry Week on American Idol

America’s top-rated television show is about to join forces for a week with the “Show That Made Country Music Famous”! American Idol will feature a Grand Ole Opry theme on March 17 & 18, as contestants will select and perform songs popularized by Opry members!

In addition, Carrie Underwood and Randy Travis will sing together on Randy’s classic hit and Carrie’s current single, “I Told You So,” plus Brad Paisley will make the television debut of his new single, “Then,” from his forthcoming summer album.

Either there was a misunderstanding about the date or it could be that the appearance will be taped next week to air at a later date.

You know, Daughtry was voted out 4th, so according to these rules he would not have been saved, because it's only through the top five. But Michael Johns could have been saved.

I like this twist. It has to be unanimous across the 4 judges, they only get to use it once so you know they will use it wisely, and if they blow it, then America still gets to kick the person off again the following week. Just enough of a change to have saved MJ, not major enough to really ruin the whole voting process, and I so totally agree that top 5 is a good place to stop it.

I also like the fact that they made the judges decide to save Jasmine or not on her own merits first, before showing who the second person would be. I knew they wouldn't use it in the first week. I think they would only use it if Lil, Adam or Danny were kicked out at this stage (I honestly don't even think they would use it on Simon's precious Megan, it wouldn't be unanimous).

Jorge was the one who thinks in Spanish!!!

I agreed with the bottom four (I didn't mention Jasmine when I posted earlier because I totally forgot about her, so she was a good choice!) Annop has some work to do if he wants to redeem himself.

Do you really think they would show him taped? Somehow I doubt that. Maybe live feed from NY but even that is a little wierd. They'd be better off just pushing him back later in the season.

Schedule-wise the following might work:

He's performing Tuesday night 3/24, but then he's off 3/25 and 3/26
He's perfoming Tuesday 4/14, but off 4/15 and 4/16 (actually until 4/21)
he's totally off Tuesday 4/28 and 4/29 (of course, you KNOW that is when he will perform live becuase THAT is the night I have Springsteen tickets! laugh.gif !!!)

Well the thing is, that date was really never confirmed to begin with. There were a lot of rumors floating around at mj's, DCO, etc. with this date before it was mentioned during the cellcast on Sunday but nothing was really ever officially confirmed just a lot of rumors but that 4/18 date did sound logical though. He's also off on 4/1 as well which happens to be the day before he comes to do his show here (SQUEE) so even that would be a good date. smile.gif It could have been simply a misunderstanding between the fan and the publicist. There may in fact be an AI appearance just not on that date.

As far pretaping appearances go, this is what happened last season with Jordin and Chris Brown's performance of "No Air". The performance was taped 2 weeks prior to it airing on the show. I know thatere are a lot of ticked off fans concerning this development but considering next week is country week, Carrie is the most logical choice for a musical guest on Wednesday, however, that doesn't mean that I'm not disappointed.

He's actually got almost every Wednesday off, I just listed the ones where he's got both Wednesday and Thursday (save the poor guys some jet lag, you know :-) )
I think we speculated on the 18th just because he had 3 days off, so it really did seem to fit the schedule, and it coincided with the release, but you're right it was never confirmed.

And I did not konw that No Air was taped. Like at a rehearsal? Oh, we'll have to keep our eyes peeled then for inconsistencies!!!!

And on a totally different subject, I was happy to see that the choreographers were able to include Scott in a real dance. So what if Alexis had to take his arm and help a little, that's ok by me!

This is slightly off topic, but what timing for Grand Ole Opry week! biggrin.gif

I will actually be performing at the Opry next Friday, for show choir nationals competition, so I'm really excited for this week, naturally. No matter that I don't like country...but the theme is super exciting smile.gif

I'm disappointed as well that he won't be on next week but I'll be seeing him Saturday so its all good!

In regards to the "save, " the examples they gave are people that would not have been saved I believe, except for Jennifer Hudson. If the rule is that it goes until the Top 5, that leaves out Chris and Tamyra. And honestly, they had already decided that it would be a David vs David vs David finale and I'm not sure they would have saved Michael. They would have made sure that they got the final they wanted and needed to keep the save just in case there was a problem with the two Davids. And we liked him, but I'm not sure that the judges liked him as much. As I recall, Randy wasn't too high on him and he didn't come through as much as they had hoped.

Just wanted to pop in to say that the local radio station here, 93.3, reported yesterday that David would appear on the April 1st show. I think they only talked about it once - at least I didn't here them talk about it multiple times. Maybe if they talk about Idol this morning they will mention it again.

I did find it interesting that Ryan said last night that they were bringing back former Idols for the results shows. They should have let Kelly sing two songs last night...I could have done without Kanye!

I disagree about the David vs David vs David finale being engineered by the judges. Remember it's the fans who voted after the Tuesday night performances. The judges have their input for sure, but they are not the voters. The finale was clearly the two best of season 7 going up against each other and the finest singer won!
Grandmajoyce
I was very happy to see that Scott was able to be included. Good for Alexis for helping!

I am glad Jorge was eliminated......DID NOT LIKE him at all. Jasmine was good but not a favorite.

it is too soon. I am sure they wont use it until top 6 or 7 -

I don't believe the finale was engineered by the judges at all. They did start saying during the Top 20 or Top 16 week that David A was the one to beat and then shortly after that, they said David C was the Dark Horse. The judges clearly favored those two and given the opportunity like this year, I think they would have protected that outcome as much as possible. I have never been one to believe that the producers/judges/PTB manipulate the results. Ultimately, FOX could be in huge trouble for doing something like that and be levied huge fines. Obviously, I believe the fans put the two of them in the finals, but the judges do have influence in getting people to think a certain way. I have never been a fan of them predicting the finals in the early stages, but they make it clear who they favor and will probably use the "save" this year in that way. I'm thinking only for Danny, Lil, and Adam, who I see as the only people with a realistic shot of winning (maybe Alexis and Allison)

Agreed! I am in an Idol pool with about 20 other people. Except for one person who chose Anoop, everyone else is saying Danny, Adam and Lil are the top 3. So if for some reason one of them runs into trouble, that veto will be a godsend. Have to say I am looking forward to saying goodbye to Megan-although Simon is crazy about her
Jessabean
I don't think the judges can manipulate by the time they get to the finale, but they have been manipulating like crazy so far this season. by the time you're at the finale, it's out of their hands.

i am truly baffled by the people they cut, and brought back! one of the reasons it matters to me is that you never know who would have blossomed or blown us away because of weird cuts by them at the beginning.

actually, this new judge's save rule gives the judges more control over the top 5 when you think about it. I just did and it seems to me that this save rule helps them determine who gets in the top 5 more than they were ever able to before. Just like someone mentioned adam, lil, or danny. The judges can guarantee them a spot this way. interesting.

I agree with what everyone has said--that I was NOT sorry to see Jorge go, and while I really liked jasmine and thought she was cute, I didn't really think that she was going to go too far overall. I just wish MEGAN had gone last night instead of Jasmine...good lord, was she for real with that god-awful Rockin' Robin?!?!? GEEEZ!!! LOL!! But Simon must have been so happy that he didn't have to save her. wink.gif

I didn't realize next week was country week. Yuck--glad they are getting that over with early I hate country music!! LOL!! Although despite saying that I do like Carrie--she and Bo were my two faves from Season4.

Sharon

PS--you know what statement got me the other night that no one has mentioned on here?? When Simon said the other night that being artistic had no place on this show (meaning Idol). ROFL!!!!!!!!!! Wtf does THAT mean??!?! LOL!! I am still stunned that those words actually came out of his mouth. I can't remember now who he said this to, but it was to someone that was defending their song choice.
Jessabean
^^^^ IKR?!
That crack about being artistic having no place on this show. Umm, hello! Let me introduce you to someone I know -- David Cook!

It's so weird that this show this year is like .... it's like they designed to be everything that would ensure that DC - the guy who won the frikkin' thing the year before! - would never make it. I don't get it.
Penguin Lover
^ I think its because they want a really commercial artist aka the next miley or jonas brothers. Hence the Simon comment about being artistic (since being artisitic has nothing to do with most pop music), the save (judges veto), the random wildcard picks etc. They want the opposite of the DC this season. Ironically though its DC's stuff that people buy (but the record companies don't get that). end.of.rant.

Yes, EXACTLY, Jessabean!!! i.e. designing this year to NOT be everything that made DC climb to the top last season.
I am STILL in disbelief that Simon actually uttered those words. It is SOOOO ridiculous. Why would they not want someone like David to win, wait, there is NO ONE like David.

Anyway, they should want another David, he is making money for him and put the Idol name back on the map.

I'm almost wondering if that's part of it, that they really don't want competition for David. I feel like last year the show and contestants and their talent had so much integrity and it's all out the window this year.

I do feel there is too much manipulation going on. I have been watching Idol Wrap this year and it's very interesting how in some ways they are being supportive, but in other ways saying much of what is said here. Justin does not hold back, but kind of says things in a constructive way. Last night he said something about ratings and has done so before or that there were just too many people this year. Gina Glocksen said that she thought the new save rule was stupid (might not have been those words exactly but you get the point). And Kim kept saying how gorgeous all the girls looked. It's almost like they are trying to be positive, but be truthful as well. The other guest said something about how they want the "package artist" which I don't think David is at all. That makes Simon's comment all the more interesting. She also said that Scott had no shot of winning because he did not fit that package artist mold. Kim defended him on that which I though was good.

But if you consider the seven winners, I would only see Kelly and Jordin as the "pop" people. Even Kelly is trying to get out of that. Everyone else is not necessarily the "pop" person. Carrie has had tremendous cross-over appeal, but is primarily a country person. And there is nothing wrong with that. But I guess they are looking for as someone said, a Miley or Jonas type. I keep watching, but it's almost like a train wreck. I feel really bad for the contestants this year who are going to have a hard time getting a handle on being who they are and being what the judges want them to be. I'm just really confused, but keep watching. I keep hoping Megan will come up with a new dance! I'm not being mean, it just cracks me up, like maybe she does that around the house for her little one!

I was also floored by that comment to Kris. Did you see the expression on HER face? She was NOT happy. Last year, I referred to Luke and Michael as "sexy married guys." I'm not going to marry them, so why should I care if they're married? And I understand that apparently there was a gasp from the audience when they saw the wife in the video. I saw the ring on his finger two weeks ago for heaven's sake! Oh and one more rant. THEY ARE ALL IN THE SAME HOUSE! Didn't they stop doing that because of "issues" with some extracurricular bonding that was going on during Season 2? I think that's why there is a girl/boy bus on tour now. What is the point of opening that powder keg? Please correct me if this is not true, but I felt it was almost like another,"Let's make this an even MORE dramatic show." I wonder which accent she'll pick to use? I knew someone who did that actually. New York/Long Island accent and then one summer in England and she's been using that accent ever since (from high school until now-she's over 40). Not saying Tatiana is making it up, but it just adds to her mystique.

I couldn't stand Tatiana...she was too much of a drama queen but I'm thinking she'll back for the finale, just because people feel sorry for her.

Oh my, Adams performance tonight was horid! Johnny Cash must be turning over in his grave.
gbcookiefan
What the hell was that on Idol tonight? I know Adam likes to be different but this was really bizarre! I have an open mind but and the beginning of the song his singing wasn't bad but then he went into the screaming portion. Poor Johnny Cash. Randy Travis looked pissed. I don't know what Randy was on to say it was "dope".

^^ you know, on first listen, I thought OK, I'm still not sure but it could work. Then I replayed it, and it reminded me a lot of Prince in Purple Rain, when he did Darlin' Nikki, and was so over the top just for shock value. Maybe you need to close your eyes for Adam, just to hear the voice without the theatrics, who knows. It's certainly memorable.

Matt, Kris and Anoop were really good tonight. Alexis did Jolene much better than Brooke did it last year, I thought.

Michael and Megan I thought were the worst tonight. What do the judges see in her? She was horrid, flu or not.

Interesting that they told Scott to try without the piano, but loved Matt on the piano. BTW not feeling Scott anymore, he's lost something. He probably won't go this week, but I don't think he'll last more than 3-4 more shows.

Watching Adam's performance tonight...I honestly thought I was on an acid trip or being hypnotized by gypsies...laugh.gif

I will confess, I have rewatched it about 3 times and I kinda like it....it's kinda naughty/dirty...laugh.gif

But he was using David's mic-stand moves. Those should be copyrighted!!! Not to be used without express written permission!

OMG, yes, an acid trip describes Adam's performance exactly! It was very psychedelic/60s. It was definitely different. Parts were a little shrieky, but overall, I kinda liked it. unsure.gif

I love Danny and thought he was great from the chorus on to the end of the song, but, ugh, I really can't stand that song (sorry to any CU fans out there, but none of her songs do anything for me.) I loved how Anoop redeemed himself in the judges' eyes tonight (although I never saw anything wrong with his performance last week.) I surprisingly liked Matt, and I thought Scott, kind of like Danny, did better in the second half of his song. Michael was marginal as usual; I thought Allison was missing some of her spark, as was Alexis; Kris was fine, if a little bland; I thought Lil was better than the judges gave her credit for; but Megan was just a walking train wreck! What is with her odd enunciations? blink.gif

Megan would be my pick to go this week, but I don't think I'm going to be that lucky. sad.gif
CookRoxMySox
I honestly hope Megan goes...PLEASE AMERICA!! I cannot stand the weird dancing/enunciations anymore...Anyone who "caws" like a crow at the end of Rockin' ROBIN..(Robin being the key word)....has some issues! laugh.gif

I agree, there are some songs you leave alone, and this was one of them. Adam needs to stick to theatre, I wish he'd go away already! BTW I am not a fan of country music.
Grandmajoyce
What was that, honestly, what was Adam thinking??

Matt did really well, Danny did pull it out towards the middle.

I agree Adam needs to go, that was awful. What a perverted version of that Johnnie Cash song,,, at least Anoop sang Willie Nelson's song with some class and dignity. Kudos to Lil for saying she was trying to honor country by singing it the way it was intended. I am not saying that you can't twist the song and make it your own or turn it into R&B or something, but be respectful. Just because you don't like the genre, doesn't mean you have to ditz it like Adam did.

I am a country fan, but I am also a Rock fan, and I really like all sorts of music. I can listen to anything. That is what I always liked about AI... searching out artists who can sing anything and sound good and make it work... Kelly, Carrie, DAVID proved that. And even Ruben sang awesome when they had country week if I remember right, Sweet Home Alabama... If you are a talented musician you can make your style of music sound appealling to even those who are not fans of that genre and you can take any song and make it your own. That's the key with the big AI winners mentioned here. They sing with passion and they LOVE music, so it comes across in all their performances. As I said before, I think Adam just wants to "win a job" (his own words). I don't think he loves music, he loves performing. Anyway -- sorry to those who do like him, it's just my two cents.

I think Anoop redeemed himself and even though I am not a big fan of his, I applaud him for a great performance and showing he deserves to be there. Matt was really good too. I liked Danny's choice of song, it's a beautiful song if you really listen to the words, it will bring a tear to your eye.

Still I am not enjoying this season at all. Definitely too engineered and too commercial, not like it used to be. And I don't think the group is nearly as close to each other as Season 7s were. As I suspected and said after DC won, they will never be able to top Season 7.

David April 1st, perfect! I am hoping he will be on the Idol Gives Back episode too.

I am also not feeling season 8 so far. Every time someone sings a song that was done in past seasons like Jolene ,Walking After Midnight, and Independence Day, I think of Brooke, Kellie Pickler and Carrie who did them much
better. The judges are so gung ho for this group, but I just don't get it. I am in an Idol pool-any ideas for the bottowm three this weekl I am thinking Megan, Scott and Allison(maybe Alexis?) Help!!
luvshep
I love, love KRIS ALLEN! I went back and listened to all his songs on itunes and his vocals are amazing. He seems like a really nice person and is really cute!

I don't like Megan at all, but feel like the judges are trying to keep her.

Also, really like Matt G. very soulful! And Anoop did really well!

I hope KRIS and MATT go a long way.

ADAM is not my favorite, but, he has a really beautiful voice and is quite a performer! Watching his performance last night, I wasn't sure what to think, but when he was finished the thought that went through my mind was....he has a great voice!

This is who Dial Idol has as the three lowest scorers if you want to go with them (highlight to see bec even though it's just an educated guess, some people consider Dial Idol a spoiler since they are so accurate): Megan, Allison & Alexis.
