Kinda random, but am I the only one who gets ticked off when I see articles that say, "Is Adam Lambert the next David Cook?" Hell. No. Not. In. A. Million. Years. Could he EVER compare with our Davey. They are so completely opposite in musical abilities that I question the sanity of anyone who asks that question! I do agree that Adam has talent, but to compare him directly to David is like comparing...idk, Kiss and Neil Diamond? Why even bother, they're nowhere near each other in their music stylings? Sorry, had to say that...

I so totally agree and I just am not enjoying much of this season - there is something missing - and I think we know what it is - and I have been watching idol for 6 years - and Adam is good - but he's not D.C. - there is only one of those...

I agree with everyone's points that we seemed to know the contestants from previous seasons better. I think it was because of their selection of the top 12. We would see them every week of the top 24 and hear stories about them. We knew by the 2nd week of the top 24 that David was a Word Nerd, the Archies became attached to Archuletta, everyone felt a certain amount of attachment to the contestants. This season, they performed once and that was it. We heard no more about them until top 13. I have to say that I loved season 5, my second favorite season behind season 7. Though I did stop watching when Daughtry got voted off...

I also think that we know less about the contestants was because of the way they selected the top 12. A lot of really good singers got elimated early on. Also, I think the top 36 was too many people to keep track of, and some were barely seen before they got into the top 12. And i think a couple of people this year wouldn't have made it in the top ten if they had the old format. It shows more of a progression if they have more songs.

Another problem I think with this season is that there is not as much variety in the type of music they are doing. Really, no one except for Adam and Allison has had any success in doing a rock song this season. Most of the others are doing R&B/soul and pop and it seems to change from week to week.

Season 7 was my favorite also, it had a better representation of types of music. From the top 12 on, with a few exceptions, I felt I was watching a professional concert because most of the contestants were musically so good, and they all had their own identities, which I don't feel this season. Part of this might be that even during Hollywood week, and through the semi finals they were allowed to use instruments, and more experienced musicians got through.

I also think I favored season 7 because I mainly like rock and alternative rock and this season had the most contestants that did authentically do rock, it was the only time they had 4 in the top 12, with David, Michael Johns, Carly, and Amanda Overmeyer. I had more than one contestant that I liked, but David soon became my favorite on the show. He is really the first person that I have really become a fan of after Idol.

I have to agree with you. Adam is a broadway singer and his performances are very Broadway. Even last week's Mad World (which was a cover of the Gary Jules version not the Tears for Fears one) was completely a broadway ballad. I can't beleive hes getting so many "unique points" because its not unique. Bands have been combining classical elements with rock music for over ten years now (first one that comes to mind is Within Temptation but I don't really want to compare the two because WT is 89573201x better). So even the genre itself is not unique but rather just hasn't been successful enough in the US for the judges to take notice.
David Cook on the other hand is a rocker. He made it work on idol no matter what the theme (even Mariah Carey) and most of the arrangments were his own. David's music was anything but broadway (with the exception of the broadway week obv but even then it wasn't overly broadway). Most importanly though with David I felt a connection with his music and I knew that he was pouring his heart out week after week.Adam on the other hand is faking emotion and it doesn't fool anyone over the age of 16.

It's a typo.

Tickets are actually $10 - $12. The Fine Line is a pretty small club. And yes, she is from here. Her brother is Johnny Lang.

As much as I've said every week how I feel no connection to these people, I do want to add that I really like Allison. Miley Cyrus was on GMA on Wednesday morning after Allison did a great job on Tuesday night. There is no way you can even compare the talent. Allison, who is the same age, just blows Miley and all those girl singers from Disney out of the water. Did anyone hear Demi Lovato on DWTS on Tuesday? Indescribable and not in a good way. I truly think that if Miley, Demi, Ashley Tisdale and the rest of the cast of HSM (and I like those movies BTW) were put up against young talent like Allison, none of them could ever compete against her. She's a real girl, with a genuine style, and might I add a real girl's body. I hope she ends up doing very well. OK, I might end up buying her CD, but she's probably the only one. She deserves real success.

As an aside, I don't even remember who Jesse Langseth is. Was she the strawberry bloond who sang Bette Davis eyes?

I agree with everything you say. And...as far as Mad World... one thing that I did, just to be fair, was listen to the Gary Jules version, then Adam Lambert's, and there is no comparison, Adam sounds awful, his notes are all over the place. BTW, I loved Mad World in the movie Donnie Darko!

Adam Lambert is more Broadway then ever tonight i.e, Hair, Tommy, Jesus Christ Superstar etc... Not that that is bad but Broadway stars are almost never recording artists. Something to think about

Watching Tues April 14 -- Allison just proved how hard it is to sing IDWMAT -- ha! I love her, but this wasn't a very good performance in my book -- I THOUGHT she was going to nail it, but it never got going. Then Anoop did "I do it for you" -- better, but -- well, DC still reigns supreme in my book -- I'm ruined for life. It was brave of both of them to try a DC song though -- so far, no one else has. Not sure it will serve either of them well, given the THOUSANDS of songs they had to choose from for this theme!!
Anxious to see what happens now!

Adam knocked it out of the park. Anoop was pretty good this week.

Did we all hear the DC reference by Simon????? I'm sure we did! rolleyes.gif

Well, I LOVED DC's version of IDWMAT...I think Allison struggled with it...Anoop was...o.k....enjoyed Matt's performance...Adam was good...Chris' song was better at the end...Danny was good, maybe not perfect but you can tell it was hard for him to sing that song, and at the end...when he looked up...I lost it...beautiful...and LIL was just o.k. for me...

Well, that's my two cents, I'm off to vote!!

No one had that great of a night..although, now that I said that I do think Anoop had one his better performances ever, tonight. And Danny was good but I just don't "feel it" with him...not that I guess I feel very connected to ANY of them this year. i think Matt is still my fave, but he definitely has some good weeks/not so good weeks.

I thought Allison was rather awful tonight..and not even trying to compare her to DC's version..I mean she just was pitchy in places and weak in others..and I DO think she can sing, but thought this was one of her poorer performances. So imagine my shock when the judges started falling all over her with how good it was?!??! blink.gif I about fell off the couch. And Adam was back to screeching this week...not lovin' that.,,, altho I did like his rocker look.

Simon was disappointed that Danny wasn't David....
I agree that I was not as impressed with Allison as the judges were.
Anoop was good. Matt was OK. Adam was good but yes, his one flaw is that he chooses to screech his high notes instead of singing them. And I say chooses to on purpose, because I think he can hit them, he just seems to think that screeching fits the rocker mode better. Not needed.
Kris was good. I feel bad for Lil, no matter what she does, she can't win with the judges anymore.

Allison, Matt, Lil bottom three, maybe Lil goes home. And after what they said, I think no way they use the save for her.

Actually, this is not true. Are they million copy sellers? No, but I own lots of independently and some lablel CD's by really great artists who happen to have started on or found a home on Broadway. Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenowith, andAdam Pascal ( who I compared David with at the beginning-he was a rocker first) are just a few. They do not sing all Broadway music either. Kristen Chenowith does pop standards and Christian music as well. Many Idols who have CD's have also found success on Broadway. Tamayra Gray was amazing in RENT and absolutely should have more of a recording career than she has had. Yes some do perform Broadway standards, but it takes a true artist to craft a song and make it his or her own after its been sung a million times in a show. I'm not really a fan of "theatrical performance" as a put-down for these contestants. Do I understand why Syesha was raked over the coals for it and Adam is not? Not at all. Broadway/theater people are hugely talented and amazing artists. A few years ago Drew Lachey, who sold millions of albums, was in RENT and the clips I heard were horrible. He couldn't even compare to the talent that surrounded him.

So what's in store for Adam after this? I don't know. This show wants huge pop success. I kind of don't see that with anyone this year because of their styles. It in no way means they don't have talent. It just may not be mainstream enough and really, what's wrong with that? Maybe not good enough for the producers of this show, but enough for a person to be successful in his or her own right.

As far as last night goes, while I think maybe Lil should not have said anything, I can't blame her. The judges want originality, "make it your own," and then when she does that, Simon still says its not what he had in mind. I kind of get what he's saying, but I think the contestants more than ever get a lot of mixed messages. One week, someone was told that something was a classic and they should let it be. Last night Danny was told he didn't change anything and why wasn't he like David (did like that though as I was waiting for it for IDWTMAT). Anoop seems to be finding the balance and Adam just goes for it and doesn't care what they think he's doing his own thing. That's a positive, BTW!
And I like Allison, but her arrangements are all over the place. it's like she pulls random lines from the lyrics and just sings them. I thought it was amess actually and I can't believe they liked it so much. Hope she makes it through though. She's a very talented girl, much better than most of them.

I liked Kris and Anoop last night. Adam put on another great performance, but I see him as almost separate from the show. My 13yr old daughter loves him. I still can't see myself buying any of their music or going to see their concerts. I'll have to see if that changes by the finale.
Tee
I hate to say it because he is my favorite this season, but I just don't think Matt is cut out for this competition. On MJ's blog people who went to the dress rehearsal said he was much better there than he was on the live show, I think he just can't seem to get his nerves under control. Even Quentin Tarantino said during the clip that if Matt sang it on the show like he did in front of him, it would be one of Matt's top 5 performances. I'm not sure if its the cameras, the judges, or what but he can't seem to keep any momentum going. I don't think his performance was as bad as Randy and Kara said (it was a little rough in the middle with the pitch problems but I didn't think it was a trainwreck or anything) but at this stage of the competition, I'm not sure he has a strong enough fanbase to carry him through.

Kris and Anoop were my favorite performances last night. Having said that, I don't think the show overall was anything to write home about. Anoop definitely had one of his best performances to date but the other 6 have all done better. Does anyone else think its ridiculous that they scaled back to two judges critiques (I use that term loosely) per contestant and they STILL ran overtime? The pimp spot seems like a double-edged sword this season because while you're the last contestant in a viewer's short-term memory, you're unlikely to get anything but a rushed critique from the judges and TIVO will likely cut your performance off. Speaking of pimping, I find it to be beyond excessive, particularly when last night all TCOs got judged by the dysfunctional duo of Paula/Simon.

My predictions for the bottom 3: Lil, Matt and Allison (or possibly Anoop) - with Matt going home.

At this point I think the only contestants that the judges would use the save for are Adam, Danny, Allison and maybe Kris. Since Adam and Danny are unlikely to make it to the bottom 3 anytime before top 5, its altogether possible they may not use the save at all.

Adam Lambert Was Up For Lead In Spider-Man Musical
Casting directors say 'American Idol' contestant could have a bright future on Broadway.

By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Kim Stolz

It's guaranteed that if Adam Lambert wins "American Idol," he'll release at least one major-label album. But even if this year's runaway leading contender pulls a Chris Daughtry/ Jennifer Hudson and is booted before making it to the show's finale, two of Broadway's leading casting directors say he's got a great shot at finding fame on the Great White Way.

In fact, before taking a detour from musical theater and glam-rock cabaret performances, Lambert was on the short list to potentially play the lead in the Broadway Spider-Man musical "Turn Off the Dark," which will feature music by U2's Bono and The Edge, according to casting director Bernie Telsey.

"We started working on 'Spider-Man' a year and a half ago, and [Lambert is] someone we know because we cast him in 'Wicked' and knew he had that kind of range," Telsey said of the San Diego-bred singer, who has 17 years of experience on the stage, including a stint in a 2004 musical version of "The Ten Commandments" opposite Val Kilmer. "I've not seen him do those styles as much as I've seen him now on 'American Idol.' And he was someone we looked after about seven months ago, but he told us then that he was already in the 'American Idol' process and not available. So he's definitely somebody that we would have auditioned, just because we know him and see him for a lot of shows. ... Let him go win, and then he can come and replace Spider-Man a year after the run. He'd be great."

Though Telsey said Lambert couldn't jump into the "Spider-Man" mix even if he does win the show because of the recording contracts "Idol" winners sign, the casting director said he'd gladly consider Lambert for "a bunch of shows," especially now that he has national name recognition.

Broadway has been very kind to "Idol" contestants, with a steady stream of top finishers making their way to the stage, from runner-up Clay Aiken ("Monty Python's Spamalot") to Constantine Maroulis ("Rock of Ages"), winners Fantasia ("The Color Purple") and Taylor Hicks ("Grease"), and a number of others including Diana DeGarmo, Ace Young and Frenchie Davis.

Jay Binder, another veteran Broadway casting director who helped Hudson win an Academy Award by casting her in the movie version of "Dreamgirls," said many "Idol" veterans have succeeded on Broadway because they have shown the work ethic needed to perform eight shows a week and draw fans at a time when box office is down and few new major musical-theater stars are being minted.

"I'm very thrilled for what could happen with this young man, because if he succeeds in this media, we have another male musical-theater star, and we need every one we can get," said Binder, who cautioned that he'd have to have Lambert come in for an audition to see what the singer's range is. "I have my fingers crossed for him climbing buildings and weaving webs some day."

And rather than bearing the stigma of being on America's leading reality show (and #1 show, period), Binder and Telsey said "Idol" is closely watched by casting directors looking to spot talent.

"We watch every week to see who's going to lose so we can cast them in a Broadway show," Telsey said. "Seriously, because they're talented people who just didn't have agents. ... Look at Fantasia. She blew the house down in 'Color Purple.' ... What was so wonderful about her in that show is she doesn't even sing until the end of Act 1. And the whole time you're watching, asking, 'Who is this incredible actress onstage?,' and she had never done it."

Right now, Telsey said he's already going after this season's Alexis Grace for possible Broadway work, and Binder said he was looking at some "Idol" alumni for potential roles in Broadway revivals of "The Wiz" and "Dreamgirls."

No One , NO ONE has suggested that Broadway talent is not great. Of course it is. But few people will ever recognize these names that you have mentioned. Some Idols have indeed been on Broadway. I am not sure I would characterize some of these as success. Kristen Chenoworth is perhaps the only one that will be recognized. Most of the world never gets to see a Broadway show. It is rarely the Broadway star that goes recording artist but rather the other way around. The Big name entertainer goes Broadway. I know a young man who is an incredible talent and has been in a number of Broadway shows. Even had short runs as the headliner. He would classify himself as a starving artist. Why is good for one contestant to be Broadway and not another. This seems contrived by the producers

I was underwhelmed by last night's show. Adam was good, but, as Simon pointed out, not as good as last week (but then again, last week was exceptional.), Danny was fine, but that's it, he's just "fine" every week, he hasn't wowed me yet or at least not since "Hero" the first week. Anoop was better than he has been, which was good, but, again, he hasn't bowled me over yet (and I went into this season a big Danny & Anoop fan.) The same with Kris -- he hasn't had his big "moment" yet. I didn't think Allison was that great (she's been better), Matt was uneven (some parts good, some parts not so good) and Lil has gone down hill, and like Simon said, just isn't the performer we thought she would be. I think the only guaranteed safe people are Danny and Adam -- everyone else is bottom 3 material. I think I'll say Matt, Lil and Kris, and whichever one gets booted (I'm leaning towards Matt) gets the judges' save.

I was thinking about David during the show last night also, especially during Allison's performance. I even watched David's performance of "I don't want to miss a thing afterwards", and I liked it so much better. It was weird, because it almost seemed to me that they used a similar arrangement for Allison that they did for David. And again, I thought of David doing "Everything I do". I heard Simon's reference to David too, and that kind of surprised me. I loved what David did with Hello, but I don't think Danny could have done anything like that with Endless Love.

I really think that David did also spoil me for everyone else, but that's fine with me smile.gif He's the first person from Idol that I have truly become a fan.

Anyway, my favorite this year is Adam, I like some of what he's done on the show, and I've seen some of his youtube stuff that I liked. I thought the rest were ok.

Mandy
I adore Adam smile.gif
he is cute and he can sing!
Danny on the other hand, I can't stand.
not trying to offend anyone here if you like him.

top 3 for me should be: Adam, Kris and Anoop biggrin.gif

I think Adam has the most potential to become a pop star, I think he has the performance skills, and versatility. It really depends on what kind of album he puts out.

I've loved reading all your comments. Adam. Adam. Adam. Wow, we just can't stop talking about him, can we? Last night, I was watching with my friends and we were all talking about how .... we can't stop talking about him. biggrin.gif He's just so far above everyone else on that stage. He raises a whole different set of questions. Some contestants *cough-Lil-cough* make you wonder how they even got there. Some you like but wonder what - if anything - they would do after the show. Adam makes you wonder about the industry and what part of it could hold his talent. It's wild. Even when he sucks, it's on a whole other level. I hope he goes far. I think the producers want Danny Gokey to win, no matter what. Does anyone watch Idolatry? They did this hilarious thing about how he could kill a chicken on stage and still be praised. I can't remember it exactly, but it's hilarious. It's around the 2 minute mark: http://www.ew.com/ew/package/0,,20007164_2...tid=19516307001 I don't know the embed code for this one. Sorry.

Anoop and Lil.

Glad Mat was saved, he was not the one that should have gone home.
JerseyGirl2
Well I was right that they wouldn't have used the save on Lil laugh.gif

I'm really glad they saved Matt, I like him a lot. I thought Anoop was actually better than Allison last night, but he's been consistently in the bottom 3 so he's gone soon.

Disco week next week, that'll be interesting! I have to tease my co-worker, he's going to the results show next week and at first he was hoping they would keep the save for next week, but I told him even if they use the save this week there would be two going home next week, so he would have something interesting to watch. So now he gets two eliminations PLUS disco week!

My thoughts, exactly! I thought he was the best in the group song, too!

I was very happy they saved Matt last night, too! I think he's madly talented, love his voice and his piano playing. I really think he suffers from nerves - reminds me a bit of Brooke White in that regard. I wish someone would help him with some pre-show meditation or something.

Sorry but I do not agree with the save. I cannot stand Matt. There is nothing outstanding about his voice. I keep thinking that if I heard a song of his on the radio I would not say "That's Matt!", like I've done obviously for David, Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. Totally underwhelming. I was sure they would have used the save for Adam or Danny if they had fallen into the bottom 3-even though that would be highly unlikely. Or maybe Alison. Matt,
Anoop and Lil will have to step it up next week Have a feeling she will be singing Donna Summer.

I agree that the save shouldn't have been used on Matt but I guess they are giving him one more chance to redeem himself. I did like Part-Time Lover but not "Woman" - actually the best version of that song was done by Chris Daughtry.

Adam? Incredible I-don't-know-how-many-high-octaves range. I'm still waiting to see him do something, however, that shows off his lower register.

Of course - for the one millionth time - there is no one like DC!!! No one on the show this year has his sex appeal.

I have to say, I didn’t think they’d do it but I was pleasantly surprised that they used the save on Matt. And not just because I like him. I’m not a fan of having the save in the show in the first place. It overrides what the American public wants and what’s the point of having them vote for someone if you’re going to overrule them? So while I don’t feel that they had to use the save just for the sake of using it, I think after making a big deal when they reinstated it and all the drama each week of watching these poor kids desperately try for another chance, it would have been anticlimactic had they let it go to waste. So my thinking is that while, yes, America voted Matt off and should have been gone according to their wishes, next week I’m pretty sure would have been Lil’s week to go. I also think next week is the last week they would have been able to use the save and I did NOT want it used on Lil (although pissing Simon off was a sure sign that she will not be saved). The judges also have nothing much to lose using the save at this point because its clear who they want to be the top 4 – Adam, Danny, Kris and Allison – and I really don’t feel any of those four will be in danger of going before the remaining three. Next week’s two to go will probably be any combination of Matt, Lil and Anoop, I think for them its just a fight for fifth place.

The save made for great dramatic TV last night and I’m sure the producers are hoping that the generated buzz will result in increased ratings which have been lagging. But for me personally, this was the first time this season I felt connected with the contestants. Its sappy, but their reactions were so heartwarming to see. The Idols on the sidelines cheering Matt on and yelling out encouragement, then chanting “Save” along with the audience, Matt’s tears, the desperate swan song, Paula and Kara acting ridiculously fangirly, the kids rushing the stage to bear hug each other. It was intense.

I think that the judges were going to us the save last night no matter who was going home. Adds to the drama of the show and now it is out of the way.

Only an opinion.

I totally agree. I think Simon telling Matt that he sounded worse than the night before and telling him he had no chance of winning the competition - plus the reminder to the other contestants that they shouldn't be two happy for him since next week 2 will be going home and its disco week - just proved to me that the save was not used for Matt specifically. I think his comments made most people say, then why bother saving him if you don't think he's got a chance? The only possibility I can think of is that they wanted to use the save and I suspect Matt was the only one of the bottom three that they would use it on. Lil is on their sh*t list for talking back and for whatever reason Simon seems to really dislike Anoop.
willow
I figured they would use the save last night, no matter who it was that was going home, and for exactly what Joyce said above, it was for dramatic purposes only. It was to generate "buzz" about the show. And they had to use it last night because using it next week would have caused a lot of logistical problems for the following week which would be the week with 5 contestants because that's when the contestants start having to sing two songs each and it's bad enough trying to squeeze 10 songs into an hour show (see last year's Neil Diamond week debacle) that there would have been no way to squeeze in 12 songs, so they would have had to make the show at least an hour and a half, if not even two hours (wow, that was an incredibly long run-on sentence!) Granted, FOX would make more money running an extra hour of Idol rather than an hour of whatever else it runs Tuesday at 9.

But overall the save was pretty anti-climactic since Matt wasn't exactly a "shock boot" like Michael Johns or Chris Daughtry. And I bet Matt is one of the ones who gets voted off next week anyway, so it's all for naught, really.

Do you want to hear something funny. I asked my boss who he likes this season, he is a big idol fan and he surprised me. His favorite is Adam and Danny which is not the surprise but that he said this is the strongest season so far. That statement just floored me. What is he thinking. blink.gif
