Anyone?

Anodyne

Baby, it's our hearts' slow beating
That make us grow old
I mean to say there's no one helping
We're digging our own hole

I'm reading your words
They're scrawled on the page
They lay here in silent rage
I'll hold you to this for as long as I breathe
Much more than whispers

If I ever found a one leaf clover
It would be you
Wishing that such heights were lower
And nothing is new

Citing your verse
It couldn't sound worse
The black recital I did rehearse
We all die alone as I'm clenching this phone
I can't imagine a slowing hearse

How many times will I play the hero
How many lies before it's true
How many times will we clock out at zero
How many tries before we're through
How many lives 'til another you

The scars are slowly healing
The lips have regained feeling
The obstacles are kneeling
The final wax is sealing
The great white ships are sailing
The feet have left their railing
The four last hooves are hailing

How many times will I play the hero
How many lies before it's true
How many times will we clock out at zero
How many tries before we're through
How many lives 'till another you

Baby, it's our hearts' slow beating
That make us grow old
I mean to say there's no one helping
We're digging our own hole
Mely
Thank you sooo much!

I just downloaded this song from the show, and heard it for the first time. I'm really hooked on it!! (Along with We're Only Honest When We're Sleeping, of course!)

I noticed that in the verse that starts: "The scars are slowly healing", he seems to change up the lyrics. I can't really make any of those out. Anyone know what they are? Has David sung this at any other shows on the tewer?

Oh, and for everyone else that wondered wht the heck "anodyne" means...(I know I'm not the only one!) :

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/anodyne

Main Entry: 1 an·o·dyne
Pronunciation: \ˈa-nə-ˌdīn\
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin anodynos, from Greek anōdynos, from a- + odynē pain; probably akin to Old English etan to eat
Date: 1543
1 : serving to alleviate pain
2 : not likely to offend or arouse tensions : innocuous

Very interesting...this song is so intense and lyrically profound! Did David write it or one of the other guys?
davidcooklovers44
He wrote it with Andy and Neal I don't know if anyone eles helped tho

Ha ha..yes, someone asked Andy if he was ever gonna sing it so the lyrics would be correct finally, and Andy replied that he can't even get the lyrics right when he's singing it live! LOL

So, yeah, it's so lyrically complex that it's hard to remember all of them.

I just bought this song from Itunes, and was a little dissapointed that it wasn't sung by David...he may have done some back up singing...but I want it with him singing it...is it available anywhere to purchase?

Can I just say that I have never, ever been so impressed with songs from two entire albums? love every single song from Analog Heart and DCR!

DCR?

I also bought Anodyne by MWK (I knew David didn't sing for them though). I really want an MP3 of David singing this song, even though I'm glad I bought the other one too. I want to make it my ring tone, but I don't have a music file to work with. :'(

The only album David was part of with MWK is Incoherent With Desire To Move On. He sang backup there, but Andy's always been the lead singer in MWK.

I didn't know that he didn't sing while he was in that band =( I feel like I'm cheating on him for listening to someone else singing the song...by the way...who wrote it?

Am I crazy or is this song about some girl that wants to commite suicide? I just can't get it out of my head...the part about how many times would I play the hero( when he rescues her) and about the phone with a hearse?

Olivia: is there a forum where they talk about this song? I love it!

No, no! You're not cheating on David! He supports Andy and Neal 100%. And Neal is the primary songwriter for MWK, so I'd imagine that it was him. It sounds alike a Neal-ish song at least, but I could be wrong.

And now that you mention it, that makes a lot of sense... or maybe the girl is already gone, and he's waiting for another one like her... "How many lives til another you?"

And what do you mean by a forum where we talk about this song...?

I always have to smile when I hear someone say that. I don't think David feels like he is cheating on anyone by listening to more than one artist. I would be bored to death just listening to one person.

I know I'm in the minority, but I much prefer the original. Such excellent writing and I absolutely love Andy's voice on this song. The lyrics create such great mental pictures. Amazing stuff.

mmmm don't know...at the end though it says the feet have left the railing...as in she jumped on the river, lake or a body of water anyways...and the ships are sailing so at the end, she did jump!

I'm still loving this song...I believe DC wrote it...I wonder if he had a troubled girlfriend? what do you think guys?

Jeannine, I'm serious, I'm a goner for DC ! I do like Andy's singing, but I still have this quite irrational sensation that I'm cheating on David for listening to other artists. Maybe it's because I just discovered him, and I absolutely love every song that he sings and has sung...and I know I'm not alone from the comment that you just made "always have to smile when I hear someone say that" so you have heard it before...I need a cure for this DC virus!
And I really think DC wrote it, because it has his word nerd stamp all over it rolleyes.gif

by the way...Am I crazy or does it say: the upstairs trolls are kneeling, instead of what is says on the lyrics posted here?

It sounds like the girl kept on threatening with suicide to get attention (sort of emotional abuse, to keep the guy) until she finally did it...amazing song!

I think it changes when sung live based on what the singer remembers! smile.gif It's a lot of words to remember!

Do you think the bit about the last 4 hooves represent the last horse of the apocalypse (death)?

I dunno... I still think it sounds like Neal to me. Can anyone clarify who wrote it?

I'm right there with you! I prefer Andy's voice for this song too. To me, his voice has always been... calming? I guess? I'm not sure. Not that Dave's isn't, it's just that Andy's is more suited for the song.

Definitely makes sense...the trolls kneeling, the feet have left their railing, and the hooves yes! Apocalypse! wow...such deep lyrics...I'm in awe of such a young person having the depth, the grasp of the language to express his feelings...I have no words.
I do believe it was David that wrote this song, he is such a deep guy!

Ditto. I think since it's an MWK song, it fits Andy better because it was written with him in mind, but their versions are also just so different that it's hard to compare them. I LOVE the song no matter who is singing it. David's live performances of it are... it's just incredible, watching him sing that song. I don't even know why, it's just the combination. But Andy's version is great as well.

Listen to the MWK version...it's a crisp recording. I think the lyrics are pretty clear. Obstacles kneeling would be like them getting out of the way...any obstacles from this life not being an issue anymore. I think it makes sense.

BTW, what's DCR?

David does sing that part differently from version to version, but I don't think its intentional. Check out this one. The obstacle line is easy to hear

Hi everyone.
I spoke with David yesterday afternoon about the writing of Anodyne. He told me that he wrote a bit of the music right before he left the band. Then Neal wrote the rest. For clarification, I asked "So Neal wrote all the lyrics?" and he said yes.
So there we have it. Straight from the man himself. The lyrics are another one of Neal's masterpieces. I suspected it all along.

I love this song!!!... Sung by David or by Andy, it becomes different depending on who sings it, but both are so beautiful!!! I would love to be able to get a studio recorded version of it with David though, that would be awesome! Oh well, until then, I'll just have to have MWK's version on repeat mode. tongue.gif

P.S. Man, is Neal freaking talented or what? smile.gif
Teralynne93
Oh yeah, Neal is crazy amazing. He's a phenomal guitarist and as a lyricist/songwriter, he just blows my mind. The only guy who could even rival Neal in my mind, is, of course, David, who will always surpass everyone else, but Neal is just great. I love Neal. smile.gif

I doubt that David would do a studio recording of Anodyne, just because it is a MWK song and, therefore, Andy's song. And while he does it on tour, I doubt he'd want to take away from MWK since he loves those guys so much. And I do really love Andy's version. I love Dave's live too, it just becomes a whole different animal. smile.gif

I'm ready for another David record NOW. smile.gif Lol. I'm still hoping for an EP or something in between, maybe something with Souvenir on it, and, hopefully WOHWWS, because that song deserves to see the light of day beyond being played on tour.

Teralynne93
^ Oh yeah! smile.gif Of course he has to get done touring first, and hopefully the next few months will fly by so he can get back in that studio. Of course, he's probably already working on songs. Hopefully Neal will co-write some of them, that would be AWESOME.
iluvcookies81
I love this song, it's weird because since David I really can't stand to listen to other male singers that much, Ryan was ok, but I like Andy singing it.

About writing credits, if you go to amazon and search it has a thing for David Cook's favorite songs, or playlist, something like that, if I wasn't tired I would post the link for you. He has Anodyne the list and says he likes it because he had a hand in writing it, but I don't remember if he tells if it's Neal who wrote it too. I didn't know any MWK songs before, cause I had never got around to dl'ing them, I didn't have the money, cause if I can't buy it legal I send the price of a CD to Adam's bank fund. Anyway I dl'ed it when I saw that, mine came from amazon instead of iTunes. I don't know if it's because I listened to AH every night before I went to bed for 3 months, not counting daytime plays and I listen to DCTR as I fall asleep since I put it in my stereo November 18th, 2008. I can def. hear things that sounds like something David would write. Sorry for the long post.
Teralynne93
^ I've heard David say that he had a hand in writing the music for Anodyne but the lyrics were all Neal.

Thanks for the info about the amazon playlist thing... gonna go check it out.
Wavelength
Seriously, this song is to die for - definitely among my top five MWK songs. It's just amazing. I think I definitely prefer Andy singing it, too. I'm not saying Dave's version is rubbish, because as we all know, it's far from it, but you really can't beat the original. Also, since finding out that he was/is the main songwriter for MWK, I think I've loved Neal a little bit more. It almost seems as if there's nothing that guy can't do. Heh.
Teralynne93
^ Dude, Neal is some bionic guitar player/songsmith... it's insane how gifted he is. smile.gif

But yeah, I agree, I don't think you can beat the original of this song. Even though I love Dave doing it too, it's Andy's song, know what I mean?
