Tee,

Me too.

Exactly. I had never heard of Chris Cornell -- that's not a slight on his talent or anything, I just hadn't ever heard of him. Later when I heard that he was the lead singer of Audioslave and Soundgarden, well I had heard of those bands and once I heard some of their songs I realized I that had heard them over the years on my local rock station, I just didn't know what they were.
That said, though, I looked at Chris Cornell's version on YT and I didn't like it. It was really slow and growly, almost mumbly. David's version was not quite as slow and while gritty, raw and full of emotion, it was a little more polished. I like David's version better. But as Simon says, it's just an opinion. There was one time on this board where I said I preferred David's version of "Creep" over Radiohead's and I was raked over the coals about not knowing anything about music and that nothing could compare to Radiohead, not even David Cook -- and that came from a DC "fan" on this board.

Oh, and I had never heard "Creep" before hearing David's version and the person wanted to know if I had been living under a rock since it was the greatest song of the 90's and it was played everywhere.

Yeah same here. I went through phases in the 90's where I didn't listen to the radio much, except the for the classic rock stations, or just listened to my cds (I admit mostly Springsteen:) ) . Then hubby and I would make an effort to listen to who was out there and try to catch up with who was current. Discovered Pearl Jam that way. So I knew of Soundgarden, I may have heard of Radiohead, but Creep was definitely not playing on the stations I listened too. I actually heard Radiohead's version for the first time this summer, and recognized it 'cos of David.

Whew! I'm not alone then, lol. And Marie, I must've been sharing that rock with you in the 90's
Was I the only one that thought Carly did well? With the exception of that glory note at the end, I thought her performance was pretty good.
Carly was fine. Syesha was actually fine too. I missed Rami, I'll have to go back and listen but she sounded good on the replay. As much as I liked Chikezie he was definitely the worst tonight.

Wow....wow....goosebumps....awesome....amazing.....I'm so excited I want to call and vote for him lol
Sheesh....no other performance could even touch Billie Jean tonight. (Actually no other performance (except by David himself) could touch this one all season
On a superficial note, I noticed tattoo peakage of the ribbon on his chest

aaah Cookie....no words to describe... I was just amazed all over again. I was pleased to see the bit about them recording the studio version. And I have to say, as much as I loved the performance, the studio version is just thousands of times better.
And of course I noticed the tattoo!!!!!!

David was, as I well remembered, phenomenal!
I didn't follow the online Idol fandom at the time and looking back at BJ now, I'm not sure I understand what the whole "covergate" thing was about - I mean, Ryan clearly said it was Chris Cornell's version of BJ so what was the fuss all about?
ETA: CHEST BUMP FTW!!! Love it! LOL. This was one of the few group performances they all seemed to really have a good time doing.
I think it was mainly because of Randy saying he was the most original contestant on Idol, so it sounded like he was applauding David for the arrangement as well as for the performance. Ryan very clearly said Chris Cornell's version, so it was all just an uproar for nothing. I heard the interview with Chris Cornell, he was totally digging it!
And thanks for the reminder about the chest bump. I was only half watching the group number, and I almost wasn't going to record it to DVD. I had to rewind and watch it again, definitely DVD worthy!
Kim Locke looked great, I haven't followed her career but she was another one from season 2 that I liked quite a bit.
