Stand Up 2 Cancer (SU2C) is having an end-of-year "dedication challenge" through 12/31/08. The team raising the most money between 12/15 and 12/31 will be mentioned on TV and (more important) have a message to their honoree read on TV.

Right now a donation team honoring DC, started by the Proverbial Box forum and later joined by members of David Cook Official, is locked in a fierce battle for first place in the challenge with the Arch Angels. The Archies, bless them, have donated more than $43,000 to SU2C overall... similar to the way members of The Dash have stood up at American Cancer Society. Their current total for the challenge is $3831; the PB/DCO team has raised $3100 in the challenge, and $8230 since the team was founded on 9/11. The Cookie Jar team, which also honors David, has also stood up beautifully with $1775 to their credit. This brings the total raised at SU2C by DC-related teams to more than $10,000 -- which is wonderful when combined with the money also raised for American Cancer Society and other charities.

I know money's tight and many of you have already been more than generous in other efforts. If you haven't donated anywhere, or if you already gave but still have a couple spare bucks after all the holiday shopping is done, I hope you'll consider a year-end donation to SU2C. SU2C, which has been endorsed by David, has a unique mission of translational research: funding collaborative projects so scientists will cooperate in finding breakthroughs, rather than competing for scarce grant dollars. The administrators choose projects that appear to have the greatest promise of delivering effective treatments/cures in the most timely manner. Every dollar donated by the public goes toward research (administrative/promo costs are paid in a different way).

I encourage, plead, ask (beg?) each of you who can possibly manage it, now, to go over to SU2C, register (if you have not done so already), and make an initial or additional gift, even a nominal one, to this cause. Every $5, every $10, is significant.

May the blessings of the season live in your heart.

Stand up.

Thanks for all who took a peek at this post, and added a donation for SU2C. It was a good day -- $245 raised, bringing our challenge total to $3345 and our overall total to $8475. If we can maintain even half this pace we're on track to hit $9000 by year's end... would that not be amazing? Every $5 or $10 is significant.

The direct link to the PB/DCO team is here:

The direct link to the Cookie Jar team is here:

Anyone who'd like to donate via paypal or by a check instead, please PM me and I'll provide instructions.

If "Permanent" makes you cry... don't just cry with David. Stand up.

Oh, heavens. when I got up this morning, I saw the total was $9010 for the PB/DCO team. When added to the 1775 for the Cookie Jar at SU2C, and 550 for a 'bitten by a cougar' team (just made aware of that) -- this represents more than $11,000 donated to SU2C in honor of DC. So amazing, esp when you consider all the American Cancer Society and other donations made by members of The Dash and other forums.

I hope everybody here might be moved to scrape up 5 bucks or so and go donate to an SU2C team before year's end, if possible. This is a lovely community effort and it just would be terrific to see widespread involvement, whatever the amount.

Happy holidays, all!

urghiggi - thank you for bringing this post over to "The Dash". I have contributed a couple of times to the proverbial box and the cookie jar over the last couple of weeks.

All - if you can spare some dollars to be applied to either of these teams that would be great. What a wonderful gift this will be in Honor of our David.

David truly has some amazing fans! When we did a total for all of the groups that participated in the charity scrapbook we made for David's birthday, his fans have raised over $61,755.80 in his honor for over 12 organizations/people. The bulk of that was raised by the campaign initiated here at the "dash" for The American Cancer Society, and then all of the Stand Up to Cancer Groups including the Proverbial Box and David's Cookie Jar. Since the scrapbook was made, the Proverbial Box and the other SU2C teams have been actively raising even more money in David's honor, so that total is even higher. This is pretty amazing and everyone who contributed one cent or volunteered their time to help support some great causes should be extremely proud of themselves. As you know, the battle isn't over and there is still more we can do. I know this time of year is difficult but if possible see if you can scrounge up that spare change in your car, under your couch cushions, or in the bottom of your purse and donate that change to SU2C, or any other organization supporting the fight against cancer. If you can't make a donation at this time, you can still get involved; consider writing a letter to your congressmen to increase funding towards cancer research and improve insurance coverage for cancer treatments, or contact your local American Cancer society and volunteer (feel free to contact hookedoncook or myself for help with this). Your time is just as valuable and in some cases more than money, just do what you can. Everyone can make a difference, we just have to "Stand Up" and support the fight in anyway we can.

Thanks, Annette and Susan, for your posts! Wow, that is an amazing aggregate number; this has to be gratifying, humbling, and inspirational for our favorite rocker. (And thanks to all who worked on the scrapbook project -- what a brilliant idea, to get it all in one place for DC to review.) Truly, when he sees the impact -- I know it will reinforce his natural tendency to "Dream Big," and I can't wait to see what kind of efforts he himself chooses to endorse/spearhead in the years to come.

Thanks, too, for your reminder that there are many ways to make a difference, some of which don't cost a dime.

That said.... If y'all DO have a dime? Today would be a great day to pitch it to an SU2C team before their year-end fundraising drive is over on New Year's Eve. I'd love to see our donor number get higher, regardless of the total amount collected.

Rock on, Dash-ers :-)

Everyone who donates should post to this topic so the topics gets bumped to the top of the "view new posts" page. I didn't see this topic until I clicked on the "view new posts" so I might have missed it and not donated!

David has inspired so many of us to give back this year. Please consider a small donation to the Proverbial Box/DCO effort or the Cookie Jar Team effort as we end 2008 and begin 2009.

10, 360 for PB/DCO, 1800 for cookie jar, 575 for "bitten" -- holy toledo! 12,735 overall at SU2C in honor of DC... plus all that money contributed at ACS by Dash-ers and WNhome folks, and contributions other places -- sue, saw the 'scrapbook' total was pushing 62,000, unbelievable -- the pb su2c team's collected 5230 since that time, who knows what else has been done by others (did you get the $2000-something ACS that the 'home' folks collected for DC's birthday, for instance)?

Blows my mind that there's so much contribution that it's hard to keep up with it!!! especially in these tough economic times.

methinks DC's fans have hearts just as big as the one the guy himself wears on his sleeve.

thanks to ALL who have donated time, money, and love to all thes efforts! let's do some more great stuff together in 2009!

This is just amazing, I told you you would reach $10,000 before the new year. David has the most amazing fans, I am so inspired by everyone who has volunteered their time and made donations in this past year for some great causes like the American Cancer Society and SU2C! You should all be proud of yourselves for what has been accomplished. My guess is David's fans have raised a minimum of $65,000 at this point in his honor. At the time the charity scrapbook was made it was $61,755.80 and more money has been raised by the Proverbial Box, the other SU2C teams, the money the 'home" folks raised for his birthday, and I am sure there are other groups that we aren't aware of too since the book was made.

Thank you everyone for making a difference! A special thanks to David for inspiring and motivating us to "Give Back"! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!

Just made a donation. My son, mother and I are cancer survivors. His two grandfathers were not. We pray no other family members become victims and we stay cancer free. Happy New Year.

Thanks so much Mikey .... I hope 2009 is a great, healthy year for you and your loved ones.

We finished the year with a truly amazing 11,385 donated overall, and 6,255 for the challenge. SU2C has not yet announced the final results for the challenge but I'm pretty sure this puts the pb/dco team in 2d place behind the Archie fans' team. It truly amazes me how generous people were, considering how tough times are right now and how many people had already given elsewhere in honor of DC.

Thanks again to the members and mods here at the Dash for supporting this effort!
