I actually didn't mind the song. I have to look at the lyrics, because I couldn't hear all the words (he sings parts of it to darn fast). Grant it I've only heard it once, but I liked it...not as much as David's songs, but I liked it. They had him on the radio and then they premiere it. I believe he wrote it or co-wrote it.
Am I going to buy his album the day it comes out, like I did with David? Probably not, but I will go to Itunes and listen to all the clips of his songs to see how it sounds and if it's worth buying, or just buying a couple of the tracks right there on Itunes. However, I can tell you that I would buy a Kris Allen album over Adam Lambert's any day of the week!
See this is how I feel--it's isn't the Kris I really liked - putting soul into "Heartless" where Kayne totally lacked that (among other things). I felt he sings parts of it
too darn fast. I left a comment on YouTube about it & was attacked. I felt "rushed" listening to it like there was a marathon going on & I couldn't understand some of the words too. It's not the Kris I saw on A.I., which though he isn't what I consider a superstar by any means, he had this folksy soulful kind of vibe & I don't hear that on this song. I know it's not fair to judge the whole album based on this song. He did not write or co-write this song. It's kind of like Bar-Ba-Sol, where it was another band's song, but they never did anything much with it so David took it and re-worked it.
Will I go buy his album the day it comes out. No, maybe a song or two after awhile. I rarely buy the whole album anymore (except for Cook's) because sure as hell I'll land up liking only a couple of songs on it anyway & that's about it & wasted my money.
I also would not even consider buying Adam Lambert's anything simply because I never liked anything he did on A.I., disliked the pimping but mostly feel he is too Broadway/Vegas & was an "actor" on A.I. not a real artist. I liked one song (the slow song he did with his Elvis look & outfit) but it too sounded karaoke & just like the original.
Though David's A.I. performances showed us the kind of talent he really has, how he can take a song & truly make it his own, his album didn't stray from that. It wasn't 100% like what he did prior to A.I., but that's not a bad thing either. Progression is what it's all about. I look at it this way, David's debut album did not disappoint me at all. I loved it. Take Archie--he sang these old-fashioned ballads week after week after week & never showed us what kind of artist he really is because he followed the tried & true formula which he thought would make him win (diva kind of stuff i.e. power "mature" ballads). He attempts to do a younger more today album & it turns out he is a one-hit wonder with "Crush." His album is nothing like what he did on A.I. Anything he did on A.I. attempting to be more upbeat & youthful was terrible in my opinion. However, "Crush" is paying his bills & is even allowing him the opportunity to put out a Christmas Album & another sophomore album. Go figure?
It's like it always is--the label decides what you are going to put on your album. Sure you can say the artist had some say, but let's face it--that's a pile of crap. The label wins (ala Kelly Clarkson). There really isn't, I guess, a huge market for the artsy/fartsy type of singer so Jive is going for Top 40 with this single. Let's face it there are tons of songs on Top 40 that you wonder how the heck these performers ever got a record label to back them.
