Was there an opening act for Kelly? Still haven't heard of anyone opening for DC&TA. I emailed the venue, but haven't received a response.

Thanks for the pictures! They're great and I love close up pictures and video. I could've shot more close up video at the state fair but I didn't think to do so.

Here is a link to David playing drums for Phil Marshall in York, PA - Sept. 19, 2009 - with Andy Skib, and Monty Anderson. This guy is so talented. I am continually in awe of his many talents. Not to mention his great personality, humility, and sense of humor...

OMGsh! Is there anything the man can't do? Electric and Acousdtic Guitar, Bass Guitar, Piano, Violin, and now Drums and he writes his own songs, dang. That was so hot, he looked good behind the drums.

My first reaction to David playing drums was the same as iluvcookies81's "Is there anything he can't do?!" I mean, seriously! And he doesn't just sort of play them, he actually plays them extremely well! I swear, he has got to be the most talented person I know of.

Stole the words right out of my, uh, fingertips. I watched this video last night and it amused me to no end. Also, I have to say I'm with you guys - I don't think there's anything that he can't do. A real bundle of talent, he is.

HAT TRICK FOR DAVE!In hockey, when a player makes three goals in one game, it's called a hat trick. This is a significant metaphor for this summer, for this weekend, and for last evening. Last night, at the York County Fair, I had the fortune of seeing my third live David Cook Concert this summer. I had previously been to the Delaware State Fair concert, and the one at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA, right outside of Philadelphia. Here's where the term hat trick comes in.
Way back on Monday, July 27th, I went to see David's Declaration Tour concert for the first time. I was concerned that since I hadn't been to a rock concert in nearly twenty years that I would not be able to take the crowds, the volume, and that maybe David live could never meet my fussy expectations since I had become so attached to the stellar self titled major label debut album and Analog Heart. All those fears were put to rest with the opening number. The outdoor venue with an unseasonably mild breeze blowing was comfortable, the crowds were all there for the same reason as me, and David's performance that night met and exceeded this old curmudgeon's expectations. He was in fine voice, fine humor, and played the dozen songs to perfection...
GOAL #1!
The few days after the concert, as I was doing what I had to do, I was worrying again. I had tickets to the Friday, July 31st concert in Glenside, PA. It would be an indoor venue rather than a State Fair. I had just seen David in concert a few days before. Wouldn't it be like watching a rerun of Monday's concert in Delaware? What a silly question. The theatre venue was comfortable, the acoustics were crystal clear, and again David sang like I'd never heard him sing before...even at the Delaware concert. The set list had changed...songs were in a different order and a couple alternate songs appeared. I am a Philadelphia area native and was astounded when the banter had been tailored to the Philadelphia audience! The Philadelphia Phillies, who won this year's World Series, were congratulated, and the Kansas City Royals, who were defeated by the Phillies in an early 80's World Series, were mocked with love. He was funny, he was having fun, and the performance was better than I had seen in any concert of any genre in any venue anywhere!
GOAL #2!
Last night, I saw David in concert for a third time. This time, it was back to a Fair Grounds venue. I worried for weeks about the weather. This week had been the one where the temperature drops twenty to thirty degrees between day and night, the kind where it's damp and drizzly for days with no sign of sunshine, and we were experiencing curl-up-on-the-sofa-with-a-blanket-and-a-cup-of-hot-chocolate kind of cold. Well, the weather became a non-issue when the sun came out in the early afternoon. Everything dried up and I saw my third David Cook concert in cool but not cold, dry comfort.
Imagine my surprise when the setlist for this show was totally rearranged. It was a night full of surprises. First, and the most shocking, was that David played the drums for a number done by his opening act, Phil Marshall. He plays the drums every bit as good as he plays the guitar! Some had said afterwards that they had seen videos of him playing drums on Youtube. I was pleasantly astounded! I was affected, as usual, by his support of his opening act. He was in view for quite awhile before he entered the stage to play the drums and supported Marshall 100 percent with applause and appropriate movement to Marshall's songs. The second surprise was a snippet of the Eagles' Hotel California embedded into Kiss on the Neck! At first I thought that David wrote a new verse to the KOTN because it blended so well. A third surprise was a Midwest Kings song I'd never heard before called 'Til I'm Blue. It fit David's style and his voice quite nicely. I would love to see some of these live hidden gems like We're Only Honest When We're Sleeping, Anodyne, as well as covers of songs like Little Lies and I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight released on a live album filled with songs that were played but never released on a David Cook album. I was pleasantly surprised to see the falsetto finish returned to Come Back to Me...I had missed it when David didn't perform it in his previous concerts and on Good Morning America and Live With Regis and Kelly. The last surprise of the evening was that, rather than twelve songs as in Delaware and Glenside, I got a baker's dozen in this concert. This old man could have stood for twenty! One more added bonus: There must have been someone who couldn't hear in the audience because there was a woman doing sign language to all the lyrics to Phil Marshall's and David's songs. It was very captivating.
On a humorous note: I know that David feeds off the energy of his audience, and often will take the microphone away from his mouth and point it toward the audience to hear the many singing voices. Well, last night, when he did Light On, which was not during his encore this time, he came to the part where he would do the magnificent calm portion of the song and he said to the audience, "Wanna sing this part?" The audience, of course, went wild and said YEAH!, exept for one. You guessed it. Somehow, while the rest of the crowd yelled YEAH, I yelled, "NO, I wanna hear you sing it!" Fortunately, as in most other situations in my life, I was either not heard or even ignored, and the crowd gave David what he wanted. He was happy and all was good.
Goal #3...HAT TRICK FOR DAVE!!
As those around me know, I have been hooked on David's music for nearly a year and a half now and have felt a connection to all his music and lyrics. I found it particularly poignant and inspirational that David honored his late brother Adam's memory by continuing to do his best at what makes him happy. I lost my oldest sister to cancer just two months ago. I identify with the heartbreak that is felt and the deterioration seen. Even more I identify with the acceptance and the courage to move forward, both when you feel you can't and, sometimes even when you feel you don't want to. These three concerts were pivotal in abetting me to return to having fun in the midst of grief, and begin making the transition to life without that special loved one, something I think our late loved ones want us to do.
As one who has always been on the unadventurous side, I was sure I wouldn't go to any David Cook concerts. Now, since the kid has come to be a well-known sensation, I have driven as much as two hours alone to see a David concert, dragged my daughter to another David concert, and even more brave, dragged my Cook admirer but unCookified wife to a concert. Even more brave than that, I have a houseguest from Nova Scotia, Canada whom I met through a David fansite staying at my house. New friends, new adventures, great music, a result of David's lure of many music lovers who were tired of the mundane and needed some substance and personality. David's is a musical journey I have enjoyed following and this trilogy of concerts, this hat trick, if you will, has left me pining for major label album #2. Years of struggles and hard work have paid off and each appearance adds to the perfection of his skills...and it's only the beginning. That's m'boy!
Joe
