David Cook And A Rubber Chicken Poke Fun At 'American Idol,' The Media

Posted 8/18/09 1:10 pm ET by Jim Cantiello in American Idol, Music

David Cook has been in the limelight for less than two years, but he's apparently already burned out by reporters asking him the same five questions. Late last week, Cook posted a new episode of his webshow "Pork Beans" in which the singer interviews a rubber chicken (named "Crazy Legs") by regurgitating particularly inane questions he's been asked since winning "American Idol" in 2008.

Among the vapid queries:

"Is Simon really that mean in person?"

"What's the last year of your life been like since I won 'American Idol?'"

"Who do you like better from Season 8, Adam or Kris?"

"What are your thoughts on Paula Abdul leaving 'American Idol?'" (Whoops. I totally asked Kris Allen that question last week. So kill me, I still think it was newsworthy!)

On one hand, I think the video — entitled "A Ficus Flows Between Us" — is a rather sharp satire on the state of music reporting. Bad questions that will make for easy "clickable" headlines? Check. (Although no "Twilight" question, David? Tsk tsk.) Generic responses from the artist/chicken which could all be interchanged with each other? Check! Fake interest from the interviewer after each answer? Yep, he nails that, too. One could even look deeper into the video and note that the chicken can't respond until a hand (or perhaps record label?) squeezes it.

But on the other hand, David Cook should be careful not to come off as a jaded rock star. While I find the clip to be amusing, I could see how others might look at it and go, "Well forget that guy. I won't bother interviewing him when he plays the California State Fair next week."

The interview lasts for about four minutes and then second half is a series of outtakes. (Hmm ... I wonder where he got that idea?) So check it out and let us know what you think! Too funny or too bitter? Also, are there any questions David missed that you hope "Idol" reporters retire from their tired repertoire? I know I could live without the generic "Give advice to future contestant"s line. Yawn!

Maybe MTV would get it if they actually played music on their channel. Some people go through life with their
eye focused on the negative all the time. How sad it is for them to not see the humor that can be David Cook.
We get it...that's all that matters.

The stupid idiots. I bet they'd make fun of the questions too if they had been asked them 5,000 or so times like David. He's not jaded either. They're just saying that s*** because they don't like American Idols cause they don't think they are any good. Which there are a couple IMO aren't all that, but Kelly, Carrie and David are genuinly amazing singers that might not have been found otherwise. Sorry to rant, but that stuff makes me mad. He's just trying to have fun and let off some steam and relax. *gets off soap box*

In defense of reporters (and I've been one for, let's just say, several decades), the reason we ask the same basic set of questions is to obtain general background info on the record (and as a RADIO news reporter I have to have a sound bite of the interviewee saying whatever it is, not ME saying it) and, more importantly, because 99.9% of OUR listeners/viewers/readers are NOT David Cook fans. They don't know much, if anything, about him. They haven't read every single interview/story/video on the Internet for the last year and a half. They don't know how the tour is going, how his life has changed, how the record is selling, or what his next step is.

And, like I said, in my medium of radio (and the same goes for TV), I have to have DAVID saying all those things, not me, and in print media the reporter has to have quotes from David, not just paragraph after paragraph of narrative researched off the Internet or copied out of the press packet. YOU may have read/heard all these answers before, but I can assure you that the vast majority of our audiences have not. It would be a disservice to my listeners to suddenly jump into narrow interest questions about a particular lyric or his days with MWK without setting up the basics first, and, yes, that includes his age, hometown, bartending background, how he won American Idol, how things have changed for him since then, how the record is selling and how the tour is going. Only after all that can we begin to get into David's inspirations and aspirations.

And to tell you the truth, sometimes there just isn't the time or space to get into all that -- reporters have maybe 5 minutes with David, 10 tops, and reporters are generally limited in their time/space allotment (for instance, my reports are limited to a minute and 15 seconds), so sometimes the basics have to suffice.

well actually the video is really funny but of course the press people don't see it that way coz of the comment made at the end of the video.. well that will be another lesson to be learn by him...

thats the most stupid thing. they clearly dont understand that the video is a result of pure bordum. these guys are on tour every single day and they only did that to ammuse themselves. of course these people have to turn something humorous into something offensive. that one little comment isnt at all offensive. ITS TRUE ! i have heard the same things come out of reporters mouthes over 25 times. how the hell could they even do something like this ? its him...asking origional questions...TO A RUBBER CHICKEN. this is davids sence of humor ! his fans love seeing him like this ! what is the big deal ? and david definitly isnt 'poking fun' at american idol. really. what are they ? jealouse of his success ? cause he is one of the top american idol winners, success wise.
so, in conclusion, F*CK YOU MTV:].

One way to take the spoof is that at least it interested MTV enough to make a comment. I hope David doesn't interpret it as a negatic critic and close himself off. I'm just glad that he spent a little time creating a short movie for himself and his fans entertainment. Can't wait for the next one. laugh.gif
