I love that video! That guy must've been Cookified to put something that awesome together. smile.gif

But my DVR doesn't say anything about David... Is it about two factory workers with a child battling a blood disease or something?

David Cook Says He's Better With a Guitar Than Tools

By Denise Warner Posted Jan 8th 2010 03:00PM

David Cook'American Idol' winner David Cook lends a hand to 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' this Sunday. On the show, the singer helps build a house for The Cowan family, whose 12-year-old daughter Kori suffers from a congenital blood disease.

And although Kori herself is ill, during one of her hospital stays, she raised over $35K for the American Cancer Society -- a fact that really inspired David, who lost his older brother Adam to cancer.

The former 'Idol' talked to PopEater about his experience with Ty Pennington and co., plus how good he is with a hammer and nail. "I'm probably better off with a guitar," he tells us.

Have you ever watched the show before?
I have. It's a huge honor to be involved. I think what they do on the show is fantastic – never mind the awesome reach of trying to tear down and build a new house in a week, but really just doing something for a family that deserves it.

How did you get involved?
I met the Cowan family though my family, my family near Bunker Hill, IN where this family is from. So I got to meet them at a show, specifically Kori, she's incredible. You know, to hear her story, to hear what she's been going through was crazy. ['Extreme Makeover'] reached out -- I guess somehow they had heard that we'd met or the family had mentioned me -- they asked me to be involved and I jumped at the chance.

What was the experience like, especially since you knew the family?
There was a little bit of added incentive, I think, having met them before and knowing a little bit of the story. It made it that much more pertinent to getting my hands dirty, to getting involved. You know throughout the week to try to wrap my head around everything that's going on – I mean they had a ton of volunteers, you see all these small things being done in mass to try to get this house done on time. To see it come up that quick and really to be involved with everything to putting up drywall and doing landscaping, it was incredible.

How were your skills with the tools?
I'm probably better off with a guitar. It was educational to say the least.

What was your favorite part of the process?
Really being able to see the reveal for the family – that's such a huge moment, to see ... them kind of get a boost in the right direction.

Did the show affect you particularly because of everything your own family has been through?
I don't want to say it gives me a different perspective because I do feel like everybody knows somebody who is dealing with cancer or who has dealt with cancer. So in that regard, I feel like it's something that everybody can get in tune with. But to see a 12-year-old girl taking the lead and really making steps to better those around her, in spite of the fact that she's dealing with her own issues, that's something most adults don't do. To see a little girl with that much foresight, it's inspiring. I think for me personally, it drove me and continues to drive me to do more.

You've been very involved with several charities – the Race for Hope in D.C., Stand Up to Cancer among others – what does being involved mean to you?
For me ... any chance you get to do something bigger than yourself, we should all take advantage of that. But for me, when all that happened, I was still pretty new to the limelight, I kind of wanted to take this platform and really solidify my brother's legacy, because I know what kind of man he was. That's extremely important to me, to make sure that everybody knows how great he was.

What's up next?
I'm actually in Vancouver right now, working on another record. Trying to get another record written and recorded and off the ground. On top of that ... I'll be involved with [The Race for Hope] again this year on May 2nd. So I'm very excited to continue to be involved with that organization. And really just trying to find as many avenues as possible to get a cure [for cancer] figured out.

'American Idol' starts soon. Will you be watching?
Oh yeah. I will be. I've got to see how Ellen [DeGeneres] does. I hope that maybe one season, Simon [Cowell] will just be in the best mood imaginable and won't have anything bad to say.

Have you heard the rumors that Simon may be leaving after this year?
You know, I'd heard that. I'm kind of intrigued to see how that all pans out. I think he's a major cog in the wheel that is 'Idol.' Time will tell.

Will we see you again on 'Idol' this season?
I hope so, yeah. You know, ideally, what we'd like to be able to do, I know they are bringing back 'Idol Gives Back,' I'd love to be involved with that. Hopefully we'll have some songs or a record to promote coming up pretty quick and I hope they'll let us come along and talk about it.

A chat with David Cook about EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION

January 8, 2010 by Amrie

Of all the AMERICAN IDOLs over the years, I think I’m most partial to the Season 7 champ, David Cook, the down to earth rocker with the growl we know and love. When I was given the chance to chat with him for a bit about his part in this weekend’s new episode of EXTREME MAKOVER: HOME EDITION, I jumped at the opportunity. Sunday’s episode features the EM:HO team helping the Cowan-Brown family, a group of people that David holds close to his heart. Read on to learn a little bit more about David as we chat about how he got involved, what surprised him about being a part of the show, what his second album has in store for us, and what he’s been doing at his hotel in Vancouver!

How are you?
I’m fantastic!

Very excited to talk to you –
Oh, well likewise!

So we’re here to talk about EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION. Tell me a little bit about how you got involved in this particular episode.
I was fortunate enough to get to meet the Cowan-Brown family before all of this. I have family in a town very close to Bunker Hill, and they had brought the family to one of my shows, I got a chance to see them, and Kori kind of gave me the meat and potatoes version of her story, and I was really moved by it. We tried to work something out to get involved. Lo and behold, EXTREME MAKEOVER comes into play, and they reached out to us. They somehow found out about the connection and asked if I wanted to be involved. I really jumped at the chance. I think it’s great what they do, for families who need it.

I’m amazed every time I watch an episode of that show because of just how much they really can accomplish. And then an hour later, I’m in tears.
[laughs at my crying] Absolutely!

What was it like – how involved in everything were you? Actually down in the dirt, building?
I was kind of all over the place. I did a little bit of everything. I got to hang up some drywall, got to help with some landscaping, got to help with some room design. I remember, oddly, that one of my favorite things to do, on the front facade of the house by the doorway, I got to put the decorative stones on the side of the house. I don’t know why, but I enjoyed that!

Was it as emotional to be a part of the show as it is to watch? I swear there are episodes where a preview alone has me bawling?
For me, it all kind of happened so fast, I didn’t get too much of an opportunity to really reflect on it. watching the reveal, and seeing the family, that was pretty moving. Again, this is a family who really struggles to make ends meet. To see them get the push in the direction that they need, to know the story going in a little bit, and really see, they truly deserved it. I don’t know, there’s little pockets where it all kind of hits you, but to kind of tear down and put up a house in a week, it’s pretty go, go, go [laughs].

I know, it takes me like a week to hang a picture in my house.
[laughs] It’s taken me a year, so no worries!

What surprised you most about being involved – is there something that you may not have realized went into building a house in a week?
There’s a lot of stuff I didn’t realize went into building a house at all, let alone a week [laughs]. To put up drywall, to do all that is one thing. To put the shell of the house together. What I thought was interesting was how much effort and how much organization went into the room design specifically. That was way over my head. To see kind of all these moving parts in play, all at the same time. Really, the whole process was large, just really large.

And Xzibit’s involved again this week – did you get to interact with him?
Oh yeah, no, actually, Xzibit and I went out and did an auction. Kori and her family made these pillows, and they’re called “1k Pillows” and she always kind of had this dream of selling one of these for $1000 for charity, and we were able to sell a few of those at auction. It was very cool. I actually own one!

Switching gears just a little bit – talking about the second album! I follow you on twitter, see all the updates about writing, things like that. We’ve heard before that you kind of take a theme, and start writing off of that. Do you have a theme for this album?
It’s forever changing. I tried to go into this record without any preconceived ideas. Because I really do feel like this is my first record, which is strange. I think with everything happening so fast last time, I was on the IDOL tour, working on the record, and all of that, so I tried to focus on the end result, as opposed to the process. This time, I’m really trying to focus on the process, which is really a bit unnerving. And so, it’s really getting into it, I’m trying to keep my options open. Right now, I’m just writing. I’m not trying to write a single, I’m not really trying to write anything, I’m just writing. I’m really excited to see what’s come out.

Who are you collaborating with right now for this album?
Right now, I’m actually in Vancouver, and I’m writing with Brian Howes. Brian was one of the co-writers on my first single Light On. I’ve been really excited with what we’ve come up with. I’ve gotten write with Sam and Sluggo again; we wrote Breathe Tonight together. I’m writing with Gregg Wattenberg again, and Johnny Rzeznick. It’s great. Kind of getting back into a different pocket, just trying to write from an honest perspective.

That answers one of the main questions I got when I put out a call to the fans for questions. Is there a different approach that you’re taking with this album? That makes perfect sense. The first album was your first one post AMERICAN IDOL, and now here’s this second one where you really have to stand on your own.
Right! It’s unnerving and it’s scary, but I’m really loving the pressure. And it’s all pressure that I’m really imposing on myself. This last record did amazing things. To have a platinum record, and to see these year end charts, and see it kind of up near the top, it’s lofty, man, so the goal now is to top that, which is no small feat. The par got set very high with this first record.

Is there a short list of producers that you’re thinking about or are you not quite at that point yet?
We’re not really at that point yet. If somebody called tomorrow, and said Brian Eno wants to your record, I’d be like, yeah, okay! But yeah, we’re still kind of in the infancy as far as producers go. For us, it’s going to be a matter of finding the right guy. I think the dynamic on this record is going to be different, and we definitely want to nail down the right guy for all parts of the process.

I had a couple questions come up about what kind of music you’re listening to these days. What are the last few CDs you bought?

I bought the Anberlin’s greatest hits record. I don’t even remember what the name of it is. It’s a collective of all their records. In fact, hold on, I’m going to tell you. It’s called “Blueprints for City Friendships.” I bought the last Acceptance record, “Phantoms,” because I lost it. And I bought “Monster, Monster,” the newest The Almost record.

Lots of people wanted to hear about whether you’re getting in shape for the Race 4 Hope for this year?
I actually have. The hotel that I’m staying at here has a great treadmill! I usually get back from writing sessions at around 11 and head right for the gym!

Do you miss the anonymity you had before fame?
Um, sure. There are times when I just want to grocery shop [laughs]. I’m in an extremely fortunate position. To be able to play music for a living at all, and on top of that to be able to do great things like this EXTREME MAKEOVER thing or the Race 4 Hope, those are all things that kind of come with it, and so yeah, my level of existence is good where it’s at right now!

Last question, bringing us full circle – why should people check out this episode of EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION this weekend?
I think, first and foremost, it’s not about me being involved, it’s not even about the show, it’s about this family. The Cowan-Brown family, they really are that standard American family that are going through things with the economy and to have the kids, and specifically Kori to go through what she’s going through, to see her level of resolve to try to make things around her better, that’s more than enough reason to tune in!

What a pleasure, am I right? Be sure to check out David Cook on this Sunday’s all new episode of EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION, airing at 8PM on ABC.

Here is an 8 minute extended Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Spoiler in advance of tomorrow's broadcast on ABC.

Ty Pennington introduces David as follows (at 3:23):
"We've got a very special volunteer this week. I mean this a platinum selling recording artist. This guy's huge. He's a Rockstar. Not only popular all over this country, but Kori is a huge fan.. Check it out, David Cook is here."

The intro clip is set to "Heroes". Great reinforcement of David Cook (the Brand) and his overall market position.

It will be interesting to see what kind of boostage this EM:HE appearance will / might have on DCTR. I'll be sure to grab some baselines prior to the airing.

Awesome, awesome awesome. Love this man more everyday. He did a great job for a wonderful little girl and for a great cause.

What can't this guy do? He's such a wonderful human being and helped a family that touched his heart. I'm sure the family is loving their house more and more each day.

Anyone catch how Paul kind of made a reference to Idol, by asking one of the builders if he was their favorite designer? And the builder said 'yea,' and Paul goes 'well you can vote for me as many times as you want by calling this number.' He then turns to David and says something like, 'isn't that how it works?' And David answers, 'yea, that's how it worked for me.' I chuckled tongue.gif I wonder how much the guitar went for? I loved how he bought on the pillows and picked the family up in style!

Great job everyone and congrats to the Cowan family.

David Cook Makes Appearance On Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
January 11, 2010 10:17 AM EST

by Laura Tucker

I'm not real sure why Extreme Makeover: Home Edition started including celebrities on the show, but it has to have helped their ratings. I suppose you can only watch Ty Pennington help so many families in need. Rebuilding different houses every week is interesting, but for some reason once you add in a family in need in that house and explore all their troubles every week, it seems to get a little rote.

This is why the show needed to start bringing in celebrities. What's most impressive, though, is the celebrities they have chosen to bring in. They're not getting one big name and a bunch of B, C, and D celebs, they're getting big names every week. So far this season, Extreme Makeover has brought in The Muppets, Mary J. Blige, Selena Gomez, Patrick Dempsey, David Duchovny, Kellie Pickler, Clint Black, Ashley Tisdale, Patricia Heaton, and Five For Fighting. That's an impressive list.

Now this week, they brought in David Cook to make an appearance on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. An American Idol winner! We knew this guy would be willing to help out a family, too. His own family stepped it up when he was competing in the final weeks of American Idol. His brother was dying of cancer and needed an expensive medical flight out to see David at the finale. The family and their friends sold Live Strong bracelets to raise money for this, but sadly by the time the finale rolled around, although David made it that far, his brother was too sick to travel, even in a special medically equipped flight, and he passed away last year.

Regardless, all of that plays into the type of person David is. He spoke on Extreme Makeover of watching someone you care about suffer, after watching his brother slowly die from cancer. He stepped it up this week to chip in to help the family of this girl who credits him as one of her favorite singers. The young girl has a rare blood disease and her family's home was infested with mold, so the job was to rebuild the house and eliminate the mold. David not only chipped in with the actual rebuilding of the house, he also came up with a plan to sell pillows combined with special live strong bracelets to raise more money. And of course, he also chipped in a guitar signed by him to raise money as well.

All those celebrities mentioned before certainly did a lot to bring up ABC's ratings for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, but I'm guessing the star power behind David Cook did a lot. ABC tapped into something great here that is going to do them well. They tapped into not only big name celebrities that people wanted to see, but also celebrities that want to help out, not just promote their latest project. If the show was on the bubble this season, I think they have certainly saved it.

David Cook Gets Emotional On ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’

While certain past American Idol winners are jumping into reality TV in the saddest ways possible, others are still taking (what passes for) the high road. David Cook was on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition last night, helping build a home for the Cowan family. Twelve-year-old Kori Cowan suffers from blood disorder, but still finds time to raise money to battle cancer. David, you may remember, lost his own brother Adam to cancer just a year after winning American Idol, so the cause is extremely personal to him. Break out the Kleenex and check out some clips from the show after the jump.

David Cook gets down to work, helping build the Cowan’s new house and meeting with some young cancer patients.

And, here's more about Kori's foundation:

http://www.kokomoperspective.com/news/arti...1cc4c002e0.html

Kori Brown's irok Foundation is gearing up

Posted: Monday, January 11, 2010 4:45 pm | Updated: .

By Peter Adelsen staff writer padelsen@kokomoperspective.com | 0 comments

Still in its beginning stages, the first family to benefit from Kori Brown’s irok Foundation was at the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” viewing party Sunday at First Church of the Nazarene.

“I felt like the launch of it was so successful,” said Heather Cowan, Kori’s mom. “That family was so surprised and so happy and that was great for us. So we are really gearing up and just waiting for the hospitals to start to refer families into us.”

The irok Foundation is for families with a critically ill child who have trouble paying for necessary items like repairs. The foundation will help those families keep their heads above water when there is no one there to help them, Heather Cowan said.

The organization is still in its baby stages, but after the show aired on ABC people began to donate to its Web site at irok Foundation, she said.

“We’re actually pretty surprised because we got several dozen donations over PayPal last night from the Web site,” she said. “We are so excited to be getting donations in from all across the country.”

For this week, the goal of the irok Foundation is to complete its bylaws before the $50,000 grant from CVS Pharmacy arrives so it can get on going to help families in need, she said.

As for the seeing the show for the first time, she was thrilled to see it, but she wished the hardships the builders and volunteers went through were more noted.

“We loved the show,” she said. “I kind of felt bad for the builders and the volunteers because so much happened here and the weather was so bad and they made up so much time that they had lost. So I really felt like they did Herculean efforts here and none of it was really recognized on the show. It really looked like the weather was sunny and it was nice all day, every day.”

For a couple of the days during the October build, the builder, Hallmark Homes, and the hundreds of volunteers had to find ways to complete the house in time as rain and mud slowed them down.

“At one point in time, they were behind more than any build had ever been,” she said. “I could not imagine what effort that took for them.

“If you ask our builders, I’m sure there were times during the week that they thought it wasn’t very much fun,” she said. “Obviously for our family, we have benefited very greatly and we have been blessed. We’re very thankful for everything.”

Late last night, she received a text from rock singer David Cook, who was the celebrity guest on “Extreme Makeover.”

“I finally got to bed at midnight last night and David Cook texted me at 2:00 in the morning,” she said. “Of course he’s on the west coast, but he was thrilled and thought the show was great.”

For those who would like to donate to Kori Brown’s irok Foundation they can do so by going to its Web site at irok Foundation. People can also contact the foundation by sending an email at irokfoundation@aol.com.
