Full Version: HAVE YOU GUYS HEARD THIS YET?
David Cook > The Other Stuff > American Idol (General)
davidschic
Ok, so this band called Doxology CLAIMS that David ripped off their arrangement of "Eleanor Rigby." Here is the link to the story, and Oh Yeah-- they want Idol to give them "credit" for the arrangement... like that will ever happen!

Here is the link to this (B.S.) story:

http://www.tmz.com/2008/03/12/did-david-co...by/12#c10994372

What a bunch of jerks! David is extremely talented, he has written tons of his own material, released his own CD and now these NO NAME jerks want to get credit for what he did on a cover version of a Beatles song, just because they did a cover version of the same song a year ago? Whatever... I guess that some people will do anything to get 15 minutes of fame..

BUT, the funniest part is that it is A COVER of a Beatles song, so it wasn't even their song to begin with... I can agree with someone who says "Hey, you stole a song that I wrote and you recorded it and marketed it like it was yours" That is a valid reason to complain, but BUT THIS IS CRAZY - there are only so many ways to sing the melody to this song, so of course it sounds a lot alike you idiots.. it's the same freakin' song....

OMG, I hope that people at Idol see this story for what it is.. GARBAGE!!

P.S.
I am comment #175- check out what I wrote- it's hilarious!

Yes, I saw some of these comments over at YouTube and checked out both versions. Frankly, I agreed with #176 & 177, Davids has a more rock sound. These AIs do help originial artist sell singles. LR is happy he did such a differnet version of "Hello".

Agreed.

Things like this happen from time to time. It happened to Chris Daughtry with Live's version of "Walk the Line". In fact, Daughtry knew Live had done that version and I think he credited them in one of his interviews but Idol producers ended up cutting that out of his footage when they were putting the package together.

My guess that it was a similar situation here with David and I don't think it's too much of an issue.

I've already kind of seen this. One of my friends posted it in a bulliten on myspace, and she doesn't like David angry.gif so I didn't really read it since it was coming from her, lol. I think this is dumb. Like someone else said...whoever this band is...they didn't write the song, the Beatles did, so how can they say David ripped the song off them. I usually just try to ignore this kind of stuff.
Cassandra
^^I saw that in a bulletin, also. I thought it was pretty dumb, so I just disregarded it. haha.
Word Nerd Rocker
It happened with Blake last year when he did a 311 version of Love Song, originally done by The Cure.

I wrote a blog on this bs.

Link in my sig.

In a bulletin. Wow... just wow. dry.gif

Our Official Response to Idol and David Cook
• Seattle, WA – March 14, 2008: After much deliberation, Doxology is releasing a statement to the press. There are many reasons that the Seattle area band feels it is necessary to shed some light on recent events. First and foremost, Doxology is not angry with David Cook or American Idol. They are, however, troubled by the lack of public acknowledgement that the arrangement of "Eleanor Rigby," used by David Cook on American Idol's March 11, 2008 episode and its’ subsequent iTunes studio recording, is a near note-for-note copy of a unique demo arrangement recorded by Doxology in 2006. The band feels that David is a great performer, and they are also supporters and fans of American Idol (Blake Lewis, a good friend of the band, was last season's American Idol runner up). Secondly, Doxology is in disagreement with Idol's decision to post David Cook's performance and studio recording on iTunes. This allows American Idol to profit from the David Cook, March 11th performance and studio recording, without crediting the source for the recording's arrangement. This is not the first time American Idol has had to deal with this type of issue. During season 5 of Idol, Chris Daughtry used an arrangement from a band without crediting his source. To listen to Doxology’s original demo recording of “Eleanor Rigby” and additional original song selections visit www. myspace. com/dxband.

• Quote from Doxology lead vocalist Luke McPherson: "Our main issue is that when given the opportunity to speak up and reveal where the arrangement came from, David Cook did not. His silence on the issue implies that the arrangement is his own. It is not." Luke goes on to say, "We were even more surprised when the studio recording, released Thursday morning, was even more of a note-for-note instrumental copy of Doxology's recording. I want to be clear. We are not seeking royalties. That's not what this is about. The compensation we are asking for is the easiest and least expensive around – we, at minimum, want David Cook and/or American Idol to admit that the arrangement he performed on March 11th, and then went into the studio and recorded for immediate sale, was not only inspired by, but almost completely carbon copied from our arrangement. We just want David Cook and American Idol to do the right thing and acknowledge these facts. It's that simple."

A Side by Side Analysis
1. INTRO- same exact intro (guitar, drums, synth lead)
they added strings.
2.VERSE 1- Don't pay attention to the vocal. both are
like the original.
- The bass line, kick pattern, piano and
guitar are identical
3.PRE-CHORUS- completely identical (drum feel, piano,
strings and guitar
- they even do the same drum
hits pattern at the end
4.VERSE 2 - completely identical (bass line, kick
pattern, piano, strings, guitar, and pretty much the
drums
CHORUS-completely the same ( guitar, piano, strings,
overall feel)
- they even do it 4 times instead of 2
like we do.
BRIDGE- after the chorus they cut right to our bridge
hits which are identical. All they are doing is
cutting the guitar solo and half the hits. The end of
our bridge is identical, which is an entirely new
section of the song hat we created.
ACAPELLA CHORUS- they even copy our hard acapella
chorus directly following our bridge hits and leading
back in hard to a chorus. His vocal run is very
similar as well.
FINAL VERSE - again, identical (more aggressive,
piano, bass line, guitar, strings and drums
ENDING- they do the same big retard ending
Also, important to consider the format. Its exactly
the same as ours. The only difference is the loss of
the guitar solo. but it is the same (intro, verse,
pre, verse, pre, chorus 4times, bridge hits, acapella
chorus, 1 hard chorus, more aggressive verse, into the
end.

This is just sooooo annoying and stupid IMO. I don't even know what to say...

I cannot believe they brought up Chris version of "I Walk the Line" and they are SORELY mis informed on those facts, since Chris DID credit Live with the arrangement in his pre-interview before he performed the song and the IDOL producers cut it out.. Chris had NO WAY to know that they were going to cut out that part and make it appear that he did the arrangement and he even said so himself:

Here is what really happened:
Daughtry's March 21, 2006 performance caused controversy when the apparently original rendition of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line" garnered much praise from the judges. However, viewers noted that the rendition was very similar to a version by Live; however, there was no mention of that in Daughtry's pre-performance interview. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Daughtry defended himself, saying "It wasn't my doing. You say a lot of things in the [pretaped] interview, and when editing gets involved, things get cut out for time constraints. I did mention in my interview that I'm doing a different version from a band I totally respect. The lead singer of Live, Ed Kowalczyk, called me to say, 'Man, don't listen to that.'...It was really cool to get that kind of respect."

So, my point is.... Doxology should get their facts straight when it comes to Chris Daughtry , as they obviously got it wrong! And, like I said- I listed to their version and to David's and they are DIFFERENT- point blank.. this is just a lame attempt by some band who can't get a big break trying to get one now by claiming that someone stole their arrangement.. Do they really think that Idol is going to give them credit, for goodness sake, they are acting like it was their song... um, hey guys.. remember the Beatles? How about giving them credit for the song to begin with!

David Cook was in two bands and he has a solo CD out and he wrote his own songs.. He is super talented , so WHY IN THE HELL WOULD HE EVEN NEED TO STEAL ANYONE ELSE'S ARRANGEMENT?

Like I said in my first post... I hope that the Idol producers see this for what is really is.. GARBAGE!!!!
Pallas
So I actually went to this bands myspace....and the SUCK. That's probably why they're doing this, to get attention and try to get more people to listen to their crappy music. The lead singer's voice drives me nuts...David is way better!

This is ridiculous.

If anything, they ripped it from bands like the Zoot and Godhead who all have done similar versions.

This band is looking for their 15 minutes.

Seems very similar to Doxology to me, give or take a few parts. Me thinks they ripped it first.

OH YEAH! Me thinks the same thing.

This band did this rendition first?

Maybe someone should send these links to their myspace and tell them to get over themselves! laugh.gif

I really hope that Idol calls this band out and backs up David, cause that would be AWESOME!
Katt
All this band is doing is trying to get attention because they know this- you confront Idol, you get attention from the media. And truth is- they're not even that great. I think this band needs to stop b*tching and suck it up. Personally, I'd be extremely flattered if somebody borrowed my cover of a song. Granted, I'd want credit, but I wouldn't go complaining about it all over the internet and blogs. This is just stupid and ridiculous.
MyBloodyValentine
I like one of you others who mentioned it went to the website to check out their version and personally I don't like it... the song just doesnt fit them and the voice of the singer just doesnt fit... David did an amazing job, and theres nothing that says that he even knows of this band or ever heard there version... I know I never did. David did a much better job and hopefully and seems as though Idol must be showing some support for they did not mention anything about this on tonights episode which Ryan would have if it had been a much bigger issue. I really think that David with his Rocker edge thought of and did this on his own... it was the same song with a rocker touch... well done... oh and I got to say tonights performance was also very very well done... and I like the person who has the David AND Chris Daughtry banner... very cool...

First is Alfred Kahn (CEO of 4Kids) making racial remarks about Japan "being over", then it's Jack Thompson on videogaming, trying to make his point. Yet he always fails. Now this. What else can go wrong?
