Full Version: Um, Jason...
David Cook > The Other Stuff > American Idol (General)
amm11383
Okay, so here's my rant, feel free to read and comment on it, or just let me rant. I have two possible theories about Jason's performances tonight (or lack there of).

Now don't get me wrong, I've said it before and I'll say it again, Jason has talent. I have all of his Idol stuff and some of pre-Idol stuff on my iPod and listen to them probably as much as I listen to David's. I have never felt that Jason should win this competition, because let's face it he doesn't have anywhere near the strongest voice or even the stage presence, but he does have something about him. And his studio recordings have been phenomenal, even Memory was good and I really can't stand that song. So as a recoding artist, yes, I definitely think that Jason has selling power. Especially with the current influx in mellow sounding musicians (i.e. John Mayer, Jack Johnson).

And let's face it, Jason's performances have been sub-par when comparing them to the likes of DC, DA, and even Syesha the past few weeks. But I always liked that he just kind of went out there and did his thing and if people liked then great and if they didn't, eh whatever. I loved that attitude about him, to be under that much pressure and stress of this competition and to remain that levelheaded about it (maybe that wasn't the right word, but you know what i mean). Like in the BTS video about what keeps you grounded and his mantra about his personal beliefs that no one is better than anyone else, so he's just as good as everyone there and that he's not any worse than anyone else, they are all equal. That's a pretty cool mind frame, we all like to think, but to live it is a completely other thing.

All that being said, what the heck happened tonight? I honestly thought that he would go out there with the same attitude and mellow "eh whatever" vibe that he normally does and even from his pre-performance video that they showed, something just wasn't right. " 'I Shot the Sheriff' by Bob Marley....go figure!". it was almost as if he picked the song because it was the song he assumed people would've picked for him. Am I the only one who took it that way? And then what the heck was that performance, if you can call it that. Its just like Simon said it was, it was like watching the really bad auditions. And as far as "Mr. Tambourine Man" goes, it was a little better, but not really. What was that lyric flub in the middle there? I know he wasn't the first to botch the lyrics, but it almost seemed like he did it on purpose, like he intentionally hummed that part to make it look like he messed up. Was he drunk? Was he high? Has the pressure finally gotten to him and he just lost it? Have we all been duped and now this was his smack in the face to AI and America? Or was this his attempt at being sent home?

I know he recently said in an interview that he was ready to go home. And I can completely understand that, but at this point, being so close and knowing you have a huge fan base has got to mean something to you. And to know that with being in the Top 4, you're so close to the end point of which was the purpose of auditioning in the first place. I mean, he found it weird that his fans cared enough to send him "Thinking of You" and "Get Well" balloons when he was sick. Okay, yeah maybe its a little weird that they even knew you were sick, but they care about you. And if I was one of those fans who sent them to him, I would've been crushed that he thought it was weird. It would be like David thinking we were all weird for sending awesome things (but no, David wears his stuff with pride he loves his fans).

As a Jason fan (don't worry peeps I only vote for DC), I felt kind of hurt by the shenanigans tonight, and yes I feel they were shenanigans. In my gut, I feel as though there's only two possible explanations for the performance that was tonight's mess. Either 1) he's trying his hardest to go home or 2) we've all been duped. I really hope that its just he wants to go home, super homesick and all that. But if after all this is said and done, and he only tried out to be on AI because hell Sanjaya made it pretty far and so could he, and then he realized that he doesn't want to do this but people keep voting for him anyway so his only way out was to flub the whole thing. I don't know I'm rambling at this point. I just don't get it.

I guess if you had the patience to read that whole thing and want to comment, please feel free to. I kind of want to know how other Jason fans felt about tonight.

My Dad's reaction to ISTS was to ask "Is that kid high, or what?" It was definitely surreal to put it mildly. I think that Simon wasn't being too harsh on him, because come on...this is the top 4. If he had gone in singing that version of ISTS when he auditioned, he never would have made it on to the show.

P.S. I have been a Jason fan since the beginning, and yes i read your whole post. smile.gif

These are some spot-on observations!

I started out liking Jason more than David Cook; it took one or two performances to make me really love DC best.
That said, I think he just is done with it all. He knows he'll get a record deal, he knows he won't win against DC or DA, and he probably wants to go home.
I don't know; I love Jason and will buy whatever he comes out with, but I'd rather have Carly still there since he's acting this way. At least she wanted to still be there.

Lauraelizabeth
I'm pretty sure he was high, in fact I'm pretty sure he's on the ganja all the time.
It's time for him to get the heck off of Idol, he has potential, but he doesn't have enough to deserve to be in the final 3, especially with performances like that.

If Syesha, or anyone besides Jason, goes home I'm going to be pissed.
WordNerdsUnite
I too read your whole post, and I just want to say I really don't like when people say "he is just like Jack Johnson or John Mayer, etc." We don't need ANOTHER Jack Johnson, we need an ORIGINAL singer and I'm sorry, but I never saw that in Jason. I personally don't even think he sounds like Jack Johnson or John Mayer and I SWEAR the only reason he is there is because the teenies vote for his blue eyes... UGH.

He does not exhibit a desire or a hunger for the prize, so why is he even still there? At least the Davids look truly happy to be there and perform their asses off each week (whether or not you like Archie's style, you have to give it to the kid--he has a great voice).

At first, I liked Jason because he was different and I thought he and Brooke brought something new to the show that hasn't been seen before. They aren't amazing vocalists, but they sang with emotion and feeling (see Love is a Battlefield and Hallelujah). When Jason did Hallelujah--I was blown away--even with the bum note at the end of the live performance. He still sang it with such feeling and emotion that it jumped through the television. It's been downhill ever since for him in my opinion.

It's time for him to go home.

I read your entire post biggrin.gif , and I agree , perhaps Jason had partaken of the wacky weed to maybe get into character of " Bob" as he so emphaticly stated , we can speculate as much as we want , but if you remember he had a week like this before and while maybe not as bad , he still sailed through and he thought he was done on that results show so who knows , I had my DC crew voting like mad tonight and personally I think and hope Castro's " I just don't give a damn " attitude has finally sunken his ship .

when he said in his video "i'm doing bob marley, obviously"
or something like that..
i was like HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh
i knew it all along jason wink.gif

lol but no, lets get real, do you really think AI would keep him on the show if he was on drugs?
probably not.

Thanks for actually reading the whole thing. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who was shocked and amazed about tonight (and soooooo not in the good way...lol).

I'm really hoping that its just that he wants to go home and he's done, but still, Idol couldn't have been that bad for you, and those performances definitely were not warranted.

And if I were Carly, MJ, or any of the already eliminated, I think I would be really peeved about tonight. Kind of like, he made it this far to do that?
emorhous
i think jason's "eh...i don't give a damn" attitude is disrespectful to the other contestants who bust their ass off every week. jason has been squeaking through each week because of his young fan base, and i don't think it is fair for others (who have true dedication, talent, and ambition) to be sent home every week in his place. i also think it is disrespectful to the audience who devotes their time each week to watch his lame-ass performances. ok. that's my rant for the evening.
k. bye.

I don't think he sounds like Jack Johnson or John Mayer, but he's got the same kind of vibe to him. The whole laid back, mellow, this is what I like and you either like or you don't, kind of thing. His voice is nothing like them, but I can easily see where their fan bases would buy Jason's music. And no he hasn't been voted for because the teenies vote for his blue eyes. Jason has talent, I just don't feel its right for this competition.

And I'm sure I'm going to be shot for saying this on this forum, because I'm sure it will be taken the wrong way, but David's voice isn't completely and hundred percent original either. He's sounds very similar to current recording artists, but that's what selling right now and that's part of his appeal, people like that sound (and no I'm not going to make the list, I don't want this to turn into an argument b/c I love DC just as much as everyone else). Does that mean its any less amazing or he's any less talented, no, of course not. But to think that David's voice is original isn't completely correct either. :ohmy.gifk going to hide from all the hate mail I'm going to receive after that one:::

The only thing I could think was...wtf huh.gif

I'm not a huge Jason fan to begin with, but I did expect him to be better than that.

I pray that he's going home tomorrow because he's not American Idol material.

His fans better not be voting for him...I mean, who whould? (Ok, my friend did, just to be funny, but that's it.)

DC is going to win this, he has to!

No problem, but I acutally seriously think he is, constantely..
must not be too good for the brain cells.
Rye
I'm not exactly what you would call a Jason fan, but I'm going to put my two cents in anyway.

I'm gonna go with your first guess - he's trying hard to go home. It really looks that way to me - he didn't look even mildly upset when he got the critiques he got, or when he admitted he forgot his lyrics.
Or did he really forget?

But no matter. This speculation is all fine and dandy, but he's leaving whether he was trying to or not. Unless the entirety of America was deaf or drunk.

Oh, yeah. I completely understand.
If you think about it, only a choice handful of people who do rock music have an entirely "original" voice. It's just the way it is for some reason.
But that's okay. DC's voice is distinguishable enough and actually good, and that's what we love. happy.gif
Trax23
Jason always acts high to me, and his "I want to go home" attitude isn't fair to the contestants who pour their heart & soul into their performances each week. I'm sure that MJ or Carly would love to trade places with him!

I hope America gives him his wish and sends him home tomorrow!
luvindc
That "flub" in the middle of the lyrics wasn't a mess up to me. It sounded like he really wanted to go home. In my opinion, Jason should'va left a couple of weeks ago. He does not have the vocals, but he has the popularity.

I read in an early post that David has some sound of a original recording artist. He does sound like Scott Stapp of Creed or Mark Tremonti of AB (Alter Bridge).
Sarawr
I assumed him to be high as well. I mean Simon ripped at him and he just smiled away. And yeah his performance was terrible. I used to be a fan but I dunno anymore. I actually think he might be throwing it. Maybe he wants out so he can get going on his own stuff. I think he wants to be the next Daughtry. Because in interviews he keeps saying "It's time for me to go home". and he's totally ok with going home. So I can't help but think he's throwing it.

If he doesn't get kicked off tonight, the show is definitely rigged...or he has tons of popularity votes.

okay, i try to never say anything negative about the other contestants--esp. 'cause they're like family to DC, but i had to share this about jason and the pirate joke--

my son & i were watching the vid with DC's adorable dorky joke and he saw the part where DC told jason "you like it? yeah, you do." son looks at me and says "i don't think jason understood the joke." laugh.gif

jason boy has some talent and charm but let's face it, in about a year his younger fans and DA's young fans are gonna forget them and go looking for the latest from our sweetheart rocker man. because:

DAVID COOK IS BUILT TO LAST!

According to this competition, he better be the one sent home tonight, or I'm going to be very angry at this show.

I don't care if he meant to be horrible or just messed up. None of the other 3 deserve to go before he does tonight. And that...

IS ALL.

amm11383
He is soooooo ready to go home, and I am definitely convinced that this is his way of trying to go home. I rewatched his performance of ISTS on youtube and at the end when Ryan is reading his number's he mouths "Don't Vote" and then at the end of MTM he says "Dooooon't". So if his fans still voted for him and sticks around tonight, its so not far to anyone who was in this competition this season.

Here watch...but fast forward to the end unless you want to watch the monstrosity again.

My friend sent me this text message- right after Jason mouthed "Don't Vote".

"I honestly felt this entire show just became irrelevant."

(Insert extreme amount of sarcasm here...)
So now I have to say: "Thank you Jason Castro making it to the top 4 and then telling everyone you don't want to be there after all and that they should not vote for you... I am sure that Michael Johns and Carly Smithson are your biggest fans right about now.. Oh wait, they actually want to and deserve to be there... never mind then...

And the reason that Jason irritated me is that there is no excuse for what he did- If he wanted out then he should have just left the show and not have even taken the stage.. the show is already looked at as joke by some people and it's not fair for him to just make it a bigger joke.. The other contestants deserve better.... They ARE there to perform for their fans and they DO want to become the next American Idol. David Cook is the only one that was bringing any kind of respectability to the show and people were beginning to pay attention and they were listening to him and realizing that this could be a real competition after all..

But now because Jason Castro wanted to be an idiot and give two horrendous performances and then he actually mouthed the words "Don't Vote" this show has gone from becoming respectable to being just a big joke once again! I know many people who have already said that they are just going to tune out since they don't care who wins now.... they think it's a joke that someone makes it to so far and then gets up and pulls a stunt like that.. and that pisses me off (sorry for the language) but Jason made the other three contestants look very bad last night.. and before he leaves- he owes them all- ESPECIALLY David Cook an apology!!!!
*~word nerd ~*
I watched it a couple times, I think he is saying go vote, I can't imagine he would say don't vote infront of millions of ppl, it would not be the smartest thing to do, he would piss so many ppl off, the show is about ppl voting, and for him to come out and tell ppl not to do no it doesn't make sense for him to do it.

Good god, he flaming does as well - that's just disrespectful to everyone left in, and those already gone, plus those behind the scenes working on getting him ready for the stage - fair enough if he wants to go home, but invent a flaming illness, pretend there's a family emergency etc - hey, if he'd done it early enough last week Brooke may have got another chance (not a favourite of mine, but at least she wanted to be there)
Sarawr
Wow it totally looks like he's saying "don't vote". I know that's stupid of him to do in front of millions of fans but I think he really wants to go. Wow I can't believe this...I feel back for MJ or Carly or even Brooke because they wanted it so bad. If Jason's not gone tonight I'm going to be so angry!!!

I don't think you all can sit here and hate on someone you don't know - or obviously know nothing about. A lot of Jason fans - are thinking about voting for Cook - but after reading this thread, I am seriously thinking about now doing it now.

I can't speak for everyone else, but as the thread starter, I wanted to apologize to you if any of this offended you. I was simply responding to what I saw Tuesday night and what I felt.

I have been a fan of Jason's from the beginning was really hoping for a DC/JC finale, and I will probably buy whatever album Jason puts out, just like I have purchased all of his AI performances/singles. But after Tuesday night, I honestly felt like he just didn't give a sh*t anymore. Like he was doing what he needed to do to go home. And I can definitely understand his desire to be home, I'm a homebody myself and would never be able to do what these contestants do on a daily basis, especially for that amount of time. But as a fan of his, I felt a little bit like I was scammed or something. Just how I felt, and I'm allowed to feel that way and express it. Did I ever say, I HATE JASON CASTRO, HE SUCKS! No, I didn't, so I'm sorry but I wasn't "hating" on him. I think Jason has a lot of talent and I have defended his talent many times over, even on this site. And my opinion of Tuesday has since changed (for the most part) after watching AI Extra and listening to him talk about how this was all getting to be too much for him and he's just doesn't have the experience that the other contestants have. I felt bad for him. I still feel as though he gave up, stopped trying, and had the "whatever happens happens" attitude. And the "Don't Vote" that he mouthed, isn't fair to the contestants who went before him who would've loved to make it another week or to the Top 4. I'm allowed to disagree with it, just like you are allowed to disagree with me and everyone else's opinion, but don't take it out on DC because you disagree with, um I don't know, about 20 or so David Cook fans. Then you would be "hating" on him by not supporting him because of some opinions by a handful of his fans?!?!? That doesn't make sense to me.

This is a pretty friendly site, do we go off on our tangents sometimes, yes but who doesn't? And we welcome all the other contestants fans to join and post topics and what not. We only want to spread the David Cook wealth. But we are also allowed to have opinions on other contestants, and this is the general AI section where we post those thoughts and opinions. And yes, some people are going to "hate" on other contestants (its inevitable when people feel so strongly towards something or someone else), but they have every right to because that's what forums are for. And sadly, its the price these contestants pay by being on the show. Not everyone is going to love them all of the time. Do you think that the Archie fans, are sunshine and daisies about David Cook all the time? Ha! They are down right brutal the majority of the time, and usually in a very immature way.

All this thread was trying to do was to open up discussion, a mature discussion, about Jason's performances last week. I wanted to know if anyone else felt the way I did, because I felt cheated. I don't feel that way anymore (like I said, for the most part). And I really don't think you should hold one thread on DC.org against the man.

Please continue to vote for DC, he deserves as much support as he can get. And youre obviously a fan of his, since you found your way to this site. So, please continue to support him. Thank you!
Sarah
Its okay, I forgive you. You would think as a Jason fan, I could learn to live with this all, since he has been getting it for a while.

It's obvious to me that the schedule these contestants are put through is really grueling. Some of the people who aren't as experienced would have found it incredibly stressful. Jason made top 10 so he'll go on tour and he must have known that he wouldn't win this. When they started to do 2 songs, it probably was more than Jason wanted to deal with. He admitted that at that point, he knew those songs but they got messed up when he started to perform and that he couldn't even remember words that he knew so well. I think Jason was way over his head and he knew it. I don't think he did anything intentional though, it just happened and he was happy to go. I know Carly was happy to go to.
