QUOTE
nigel lithgow (AI producer) on ryan's radio show
-archie is singing "imagine"
-clive did pick them each songs
-jonas brothers
-the "biggest star in the world right now" will be on
-the top 5 will each have a duet with somebody
-for their third song, they can either do a reprise or something new
and most importantly: they EACH chose their own coronation song from the top 10 highest vote-getters in the songwriting contest! \o/

Wow, seriously???? That would be GREAT news!!! I'm listening to it right now.
So then what was the point of us voting, to narrow it in half?

Haha! They must have realised the winner was totally awful. XD Or maybe Cookie found a song that he liked and it happened to be at #10.
Yup Nigel's exact words are, "...they've actually chosen a song each from the top 10 songs that have been voted for on the web..."

that is the best news!! they did say the finale would have a twist this year... I'm so happy it will be to David's benefit

I am listening to the podcast right now and Nigel said they are doing something like they did with Celine Dion and Elvis--not for anything, but I HATED THAT...LOL
Maybe a Beatles reunion with the deceased members and Paul McCartney & Ringo singing with the Idols??? I thought of this when they were doing and re-doing the Beatles week...since they were all so stoked to get the Beatles songbook...hmmmm.
That might actually be pretty cool though... if not a little creepy...

I like that they each get to pick a finale song from the contest because I'm interested to see if DC picks one of the ones that I imagined him singing. It's like a game of how well do you think you know your favorite's style.

I agree in thinking that was a bit weird with Celine singing alongside a hologram of Elvis.

Getting to choose a coronation song from the top ten is VERY good news. Now let's just hope there was something in the top ten that Cookie can cook.
I wonder why Nigel told everybody Archie was doing "Imagine" again but didn't drop any hints about what Cookie is singing. I WANT TO KNOW!!
Pretty much anything he's already done (except Innocent or Dare You to Move -- I actually really liked both of them but I know they his least popular songs so far) would sound good to me, especially if he reprised Hello or Happy Together which were so long ago. I don't know whether it's better to do something you already did well and risk having everybody compare it to the first performance and find it lacking OR do something you didn't like that you did (to do it better this time) but remind everybody of the first performance not being all that great OR do something completely new that doesn't have that recognition and "oooooh, he's doing the hit!" factor.
I am trying not to just see negatives!
When it comes to Cookie, I have a feeling I will love it, anyway, no matter which way he picks! I'm ready with my landline and my new AT&T phone with unlimited wireless (250 text votes set up and ready to send within the first five minutes) to send DAVID COOK FOR THE WIN!!!!

David C. is known as the guy who always takes risks, so probably he will do a new song or something different from any of his previous performances. Archuleta singing “Imagine” is so predictable!!!! Even if DA sings it really well (as I’m sure he will), maybe that is going to be a disadvantage for him as it will lead to the typical point of comparison between him and DC (safe vs. risk). I’m trying to stay positive too…

madonna sounds like a very good guess for the person that Nigel is talking about... but yes it could also be David Cook
he might not have wanted to give away DC's song cause it would ruin it... DC's all about the shock and unpredictable we all knew that Archie was going to sing imagine honestly we didn't even need Nigel to confirm it he's that predictable.

It just hit me -- DA sang Imagine at his homecoming. And he's singing it AGAIN?
Maybe Nigel didn't release DC's because either:
A. DC won't tell him (ha, can he do that? Prob not)
B. DC's doing a NEW song, not from his list
C. Simon and/or Nigel are weighing on DC to win and want to keep the surprise element for him.

From what I could tell listening to that interview was the fact it sounded like they weren't going to let them change their final song up and if that's true, it kind of stinks but at least they won't be singing the same song but the fact that Clive has got a hand in pick a song for them makes me somewhat nervous but I'm a little more optimistic that I was yesterday. Oh I just knew something like this was going to happen. I remember Simon saying something about a twist or something for the coronation song.
This is much much better, letting the top 2 select their own song they want to sing. Sure, the field is limited, but this is a much better scenario than forcing the top 2 to sing the same cheesefest song.
I've only listened to two of the songs "No turning back" and "Something like Heaven" both of those songs I could see Cook nailing, even if he can't recompose the song and tweak it more to something he feels comfortable with.
However my final choice for David is "Something Like Heaven" I could so see that being a hit single. I mean of course I'd rather have something off analog heart or another song david has written himself but we have to play by AI rules. When I first heard something like heaven it sounded like a daughty song, in the terms of what it sounded like. David would crush the competition with this song.
Well of course Nigel told us Archie was going to do imagine. Like that's a shocker to anyone? David is the element of surprise, the risk taker, the mystery, the 8th wonder of the world (Threw that one in for good measure) AI wants viewers. They aren't going to spoil us with David's choice
I think the big star is going to be the Beatles as well. Look the Beatles are my favorite band, and I was thrilled with all the Beatles stuff this year, but I'm not sure how I would feel about this thing they have planned. I didn't like the Celine/Elvis song, but I did kind of like the Alicia Keys/Frank Sinatra song that was done at the Grammy's. Who knows maybe it will be good. That's if it IS the Beatles.

i agree with those that say "something like heaven" could be a hit... i just can't hear cook singing it. i wish i had the list of songs so i could search for them. i've run across a few and they all suck if you ask me. SLH was the only one that is at all pop or catchy... but that's exactly the problem for me... it's catchy pop... i want david to rock... and not be cheesy... and the title is so close to "inside your heaven", the season four song.
i'm worried about this song writer comptetion song... i really hope there are some hidden jems out there that we haven't heard yet...
my guess for biggest star would have been riihana or leona lewis... but LL was already on the show...
i agree that the hologram is probably a beatles thing since they are beating that to death this year...
i think cook will chose a new song rather than reprise an old

I'm not as worried as I was before, but I'm still concerned about that final song if for no other reason, we know that even the best ones are generic cheese and if it's not to Simon's liking, he will call Archie the winner of Idol just like he did last year with Jordin. I wished they had been allowed to change these songs up. I'm kind of ticked they won't be able to do that but I know Cookie won't disappoint regardless.

However, we know that Cookie was able to take FTEISYF and make it his own so I guess we will see tomorrow night.

I am happy about the information that has leaked out about tomorrow's show, except one thing kind of bothers me.. They went through the process of having a songwriting contest with the purpose being to have each contestant perform the winning song. And now, they are letting them pick a song - from the list of the submitted songs- instead of having them perform the song that actually won the contest.. I guess I don't understand that part.... The contest was promoted for the songwriter to write the winning song, yet we have no way to know which song actually got the most votes so who knows if either of them choose the winning song? Does this make any sense? I guess I just think they should not have changed it from last year... they had them perform the winning song and it certainly did not work out for Blake Lewis very well to have to sing "This is my Now", as we all know by now.. I think they should have to sing the same song and let them do whatever arrangement they want with it, but have them do the same song, as that is how the contest was designed.. if it was promoted differently to the songwriters and they were told-- "oh hey, we want you to write a song and they might pick your song to sing in the finale.. I don't think they would get anyone to enter the contest to begin with..
I know this sounds kind of nit picky, but I think they should have either stuck with the contest, as it was last year OR just scrapped the whole thing instead of changing it.. I mean, if you entered this contest and then found out that the they got to choose the song instead of singing the one that actually won the contest, wouldn't you wonder why you even entered in the first place?
I am just saying this out of fairness to both little david and Our David.. since seeing them sing the same song and then seeing who did it better, would have been a better indicator as to who is the overall better performer.. and now since they both picked songs that fit their styles, it's going to be harder to make any comparison at all, since it's not the same song... I can't really compare two different songs as to who's better, as I have never heard either song before and have no way to know what it sounded like before they sang it..
again, sorry to sound nit picky, but does ANYONE else agree with me on this? OR even disagree.. I would love to hear what you guys think.. and that is my two cents worth. thanks for listening!

May 19 2008, 02:35 PM
davidschic,
I can sort of see where you are coming from, but on the other hand, I never liked the idea of the songwriting competition to begin with. I agree that it's sort of odd to change the rules at this late date, but on the other hand, if the winning song had of been geared towards Archie, then our David would have had the disadvantage and Archie would have been the shoe in to win. I never liked the fact that Jordin and Blake had to sing "This Is My Now". That song was tailored more for Jordin's voice and not Blake's and that gave her a huge advantage. I honestly think this decision is a little bit more on the fair side I just wished they could have both been able to arrange the song to according to their individual strengths but Cook has surprised us so many times on so many levels that he really now has a chance to take a simple song and make it his own. I feel at least now he has a fighting chance at this regardless of the end result and I surely hope the fans will vote!

May 19 2008, 03:03 PM
Pam08-
I can see your point too... the thing that I think I missed when I was writing my little rant was that I just don't think it's fair to change the rules mid stream like that.. the song could have been geared to either one of them, but the way to make it fair would have been to give them the song and then say "do whatever you want with it" and then let them sing it their own way.. by having two different songs, it's just harder to compare them.. and that's what I thought we were supposed to be doing.. seeing them do the same song and seeing how different they could or would make it and which version we liked better and now that has all changed!
So, I hope that makes a bit more sense on where I am coming from.. and thanks for your intelligent reply.. it's nice to know that I was understood, since I was kind of ranting about it.... sometimes I get that way.. sorry about that.
This is just the only place I can come to and express myself when it comes to David Cook and everyone here gets it.. so that's pretty cool... glad to know we all support Our David to win this year! I can't wait until tomorrow night to see/hear whatever he does, I am sure it will be amazing!

May 19 2008, 03:18 PM
davidschic -- I see where you're coming from. However, it has been made clear from the beginning that the voting on the AI site would only determine the top 20 songs according to the viewers, then the producers would ultimately choose which song the contestants would sing. So the 'winning' song was never going to be based on the votes to begin with. The only difference now is that the contestants, not the producers, will be the ones deciding on the song, which is a huge step up in my opinion.

May 19 2008, 03:36 PM
I like the idea of them getting to pick a song, instead of them both having to try and perform the same one. I think that this can only be a good thing for Cookie. I agree that it would be better if they were allowed to change up the arrangement, but still...i feel slightly better about that aspect of the competition.
