They're doing songs from the year they were born. So David would have to pick a song from 1982.
It's basically like another 80's week since the majority of the contestants were born then. The only two that weren't are David A. and Michael Johns.

1983 was better

Songs from 1982 huh...
Well here's the top 10 from that year just to get an idea of the time, but he can pick one of like...a zillion songs.
None of these songs really scream 'David Cook' to me...except "Don't you want me" it would be cool to see what he could do with that

i'd be hot on him singing "Jack and Diane"... he could rock that out.
at first i was upset because it meant again that we'd get nothing after 1989... but then i remembered that Archuleta was born in the 90s

Then I felt old.

Jack and Diane could be very good for him. It's quiet enough that it would be considered "different" by the judges, but still rock enough that he could pull it off!

Mar 21 2008, 06:37 AM
Haha. It would so funny if he did 'Up Where We Belong'.
he kind of has a husky quality to his voice like Joe Cocker and the judges couldn't accuse him for being predictable. xD

OMG.. I remember and love MOST of these songs.. wow.. I guess just gave away my age on that one.. LOL
Anyways.. my picks from the above list are:Jack and Diane- This would be awesome - he could totally pull if off "as is" -
Don't You Want Me- I think he could pull this off since it has a such catchy chorus
Eye of the Tiger- the beat has a good rock edge to it. and he has the voice for it.... and the lyrics fit him perfectly.. "just a man and his will to survive.." OMG, he should totally do this song!!!!
Centerfold- Wow, I used to LOVE this song.. (Ok, I secretly still do) I know he would do an amazing job with it!
Abracadabra- "I wanna reach out and grab ya." That's about all l I have to say on this one!!!!
Hard to Say I'm Sorry- just him and his guitar on this one.. WOW!

Seeing as David covered Jack and Diane live with Axium often, I could see him being prevented from doing it by the show's bigwigs. But I have heard him sing it, and it was always a crowd favorite.

You are probably right. The bigwigs seem to ruin everything. However, Carly sang Come Together and I think I read somewhere that the song was something she regularly performed.
Jack and Diane would be insanely cool!

I think he should stay far away from Open Arms and Jack and Diane. If he does either of those songs without pulling a major rabbit out of his hat, he'll get the 'predictable/indulgent' critique.
I'd love to hear him do Don't You Want Me by Human League or Do You Believe in Love by Huey Lewis. I think those are different enough that he could crunch them and make magic.
Oh, and could I just say now that my inner 13 yr old will squee herself to death if he does 'Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon' on Neil Diamond night.

Well, while we're brainstorming here, I'd love to request the following:
Neil Diamond night - Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon
Dolly Parton night - Jolene by way of The White Stripes
Andrew Lloyd Webber night - Music of the night with crunchy emo guitars
Top 40 night - Umbrella by way of Plain White Ts

For songs from 1982, I'd have to go with the following:
- "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Rio" - Duran Duran
- "Rock the Casbah" - the Clash
- "I Ran" - Flock of Seagulls
- "Hurts So Good" and "Jack and Diane" - John Cougar Mellencamp
- "Spirits in the Material World" - the Police (album from 1981, but released as a single in 1982)
I realize most of these don't fit the typical profile of David Cook songs. But just think of how he could change them around to rock them out, or even go acoustic on them.

That's kinda funny that Umbrella was mentioned since his "celeb. crush" redid it!

I don't think it would be a problem for him to do Jack and Diane... loads of people in the past have sung songs they either recorded as demos or sung live frequently.
I hope he does that one. Better to do something he's already familiar with.
ETA: Hurts So Good would be hot as hell haha.
And also there are ALOT of covers of Umbrella... besides Mandy's, Taylor Swift has one, Carrie Underwood did one.. My Chemical Romance did one

I can kinda forsee him making the same mistake he did with Day Tripper and just being predictable.
