Full Version: Guys, I need help understanding...
David Cook > David Cook > All About David Cook
lovedavidtoomuch
Alright, this is what I want to know, and I'm not attacking anyone - I really and truly do not understand.

There is no talking about "personal" David things on this board (who he is dating, vices, habits, former girlfriends, etc.) because it has been decided that this type of discussion would be 'disrespectful' or some type of privacy violation. For instance, a thread was closed today because it had to do with David asking Kimberly Caldwell out, even though it was completely public and therefore, open to comment; David Cook (I'm fairly certain) has been around long enough to know that anything he does publicly is going to be noticed and discussed.

Members of this board can't dish on this new situation, or any old situation that mods decide is disrespectful, and yet there exists fanfiction on this site that is incredibly more offensive to a subject than some speculation about past behavior. I can't imagine David visiting this board and being edified by any of the fanfic here (entertaining as it may be); something like that is much, much easier to misunderstand as ultra-creepy and/or presumptous.

So, long story short: there's no talking, but writing him anyway you want is just fine?

Can someone explain this to me?

fiction is more believable than reality. smile.gif

you know, i've wondered about that too - but cookielust, i have no idea what what you said means...maybe because i have a cold and am exhausted lol? i guess that pretend is pretend? maybe...i dont know, i still think i'd be turned off - esp if i were family or something

I think calling a woman 'nasty' after DC politely presents her wth a flower and asks her out is rude. David is gong to have dates, and girlfriends. We need to support him and his music.

I don't venture into the fanfic section, it's not my thing, but the key work is FICTION.

i have no idea what i meant either. LOL i just suddenly remembered this quote about the difference between fiction and reality is you have to make fiction believable. something along those lines.

i have written a few one shot fanfics but i don't think i delved into his life any more than i should. my fics have always been from a fan's point of view, i don't think i've written him "out of character". one of the reasons i didn't wanna heavily get into writing fan fics about him is because i really don't care what goes on in his private life, other than of course i want him to be happy. and i haven't read any of the fics too.

All of this is fairly standard in most message boards. I've seen plenty that have strict privacy rules, but allow fan fiction, even of the explicit variety.
Probably because the discussing of personal lives, whether past, present, future, or complete speculation opens up cans of worms that we have no business talking about. And because we don't really know jack about the subject at hand, we shouldn't be throwing our opinions in on it. I think that's why the Kim Caldwell topic was closed. Just because he asked her out on a date (yes, on live TV), people got catty and started trashing her. I don't know either of the people involved, so I don't comment on it, nor do I act "jealous." All that matters to me is that David is happy. And if taking her out on a date makes him happy, then, dude, go for it. Its his life, and he can live it as he sees fit.
Fiction, on the other hand, is just that. Fiction. It never happened, and its not likely to ever happen. For the most part, its a healthy outlet and not meant to be taken seriously. I can only speak for myself, but I don't think anyone is exactly acting on anything that's been written.
Thats just my take on it.

hey there to the OP! for me, i think you have a point on what you're trying to say here. considering David is now a public figure, it can't be help when media will have frenzy regarding his personal life esp. love life considering he's a bachelor. i think there's nothing wrong with topics like that as long as it is moderated and decent.happy.gif

Why are not just the innappropriate posts deleted as opposed to the whole thread. From memory some people were saying some very nice things in this thread and wishing him well etc.

I don't think it delves into his private life when something is publicly aired and then people decide to make a positive or congrats type comment.

Many of us are respectable married women who are just interested in DC - and if we are overseas then sometimes the only news we get is from this site.

I remember reading this thread and thinking Good Luck to ya DC - you deserve it.

But now after hearing that it has been deleted I kinda feel dirty. I didn't even post a comment on the thread - nor have I ever posted a negative DC comment. It is as if someone is telling this 38year old respectable midwife and mum that you shouldn't be reading this stuff.

I have never read fan fic - it just doesn't appeal to me.

I know the mods have a huge job to do and I congratulate them for it - but how far is too far?

I would bet my house that every one of us has bought a tabloid magazine and everyone of us will more than likely buy any magazines that are going to come out with DC on the cover.

Sorry..just my opinion but I kind of feel humiliated now.

see, those are all good points...the question of 'where do we draw the line?' is particularly important, and here's why:

we do not know these people - i mean, sure, there are a handful of people here who actually know david cook before idol, but for the most part, we all love him bc we saw him on american idol. going along w that, we SAW him - meaning, we all love his voice, but come on - a lot of what we say here is some bastardization of "he's so hot", right? we apply to him the only things we can - the things we see through the media, which connects us to the kimberly caldwell thread.

the odds are, no one on this board knows here, but what can we find out about her? a quick google search yields a whole slew of ickyness, including (but not limited to) possible threesomes, blatant promiscuity, desired boobjob, slutty maxim photos, etc. So we, as david cook fans, see this and think: "well, you can't believe everything you see/hear...let's be happy that he's happy" but then there is an innate obligation to apply that to david himself and then we find ourselves in the uncomfortable position of inner debate: is he as nice as the media says, or is he a total douche? do all the things kc has said or ways she has protrayed herself just get wiped away bc dc hands her a flower and thinks she looks a little like mandy moore?

thats just a long way of saying, what if kc is nasty? we cant say it because it might offend david? or is it just a question of syntax or word choice; if the thread that was closed had said "kimberly caldwell has been in some compromising situations and i've never really cared for her?"
