Full Version: Guitar Hero Theory
David Cook > David Cook > All About David Cook

(EDIT: Why David C had the better odds...woops)

I had an epiphany while watching the commercial for Guitar Hero (for the 4th or 5th million time.)

I'm a huge guitar hero fan ever since I started playing last year (college student, it's what we do tongue.gif) and when David sang with ZZTop I instantly recognized it as a guitar hero song...then the commerical come up...

So my thought is: With the popularity of Guitar Hero, Rock of Love, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Come-back tours of past hair bands etc...did David come at the right moment and ride that wave to the finish?

Set aside the fact that he's very talented, I'm talking about what's in the mind of society right now...what type of music we're in the mood for.

If the Michael Buble types were all the rage David A may of got it...

Thoughts?

You have made a very good point. Right now in America, its all about rock music. Nice job. I agree with you.

My husband said the exact same thing. With the popularity of people like Daughty and Nickleback, DC came along at just the right time.

Well I've never even thought of this but you are definitely onto something.
It seems as if the 80's and rock have really made a comeback lately, so I guess that it could be a factor in why David Cook was so popular and why he won but I think it is more of a testament to the man he is. He is just amazing in everyway!

Could be! I know I find him completely refreshing and yes, for lack of a better word although it's been used to death - versatile. I quit listening to the radio l-o-n-g ago because it all sounds the same and there was NOTHING worth listening to. (IMO) He has the whole package (again - overused phrase), I think that's what appeals to so many age groups. There's something for everyone!

I'm so sick of all the Disneyfied music that all sounds the same (I'm obviously not 12). Even when I WAS 12 I never liked bubble gum pop. I was a teen when ZZ Top had that hit "Sharp Dressed Man" and I was floored that DC got to sing with them and of course he was completely awesome as their lead singer. Nothing cooler in my book.

I think there is a HUGE hole in the market for the "older" crowd, more sophisticated, more discerning ..... however you want to label us. cool.gif

I've been mulling this over and have another thought too.

DC has a depth that seems to be lacking today, something timeless. There are certain songs and certain bands/singers who will always be cool, generation after generation will hear their songs and love them. That is really lacking today I think because everyone is trying to fit into a mold. DC's talent is timeless.

When I read that part I thought of Bon Jovi...they started in 1983ish (?) and still writing and recording in 2008...Rolling Stones started in the 60's and are still hanging out....Areosmith also. What David has to do is find a unique but familiar niche in Rock history (Already, winning American Idol is a niche in itself). When his next solo album comes out (with the AI contract, not what he's already done) I hope that he does have a unique sound...I'm sure he will. Unique (but not too strange) sells.

I think what you're talking about is we need a person (or band) who starts in 2008 and will be remembered 30 or 40 years from now. Although we cannot predict how well he will do, we can look at where he's starting and hope he's going along the right path.

You can see in his eyes that he's got something...a wise person looks back at us...that same person, I hope, will look at us again 40 years from now, his eyes and heart unchanged.
