Being crowned American Idol champ is a huge thrill for David Cook — and an even bigger one for his biggest fan, 7-year-old Tampa, Fla., native Lindsey Rose Belcher.

Star broke the story in early April about how David, 25, has been wearing a plastic orange wristband onstage in support of courageous Lindsey, who's been battling leukemia, after meeting her father, Charley Belcher, a TV feature reporter for Tampa's Fox WTVT Channel 13.

The wristband was still in place as David captured the Idol title on May 21 — and Lindsay, as usual, was glued to her TV at home.

"I called Lindsey right after David won and she was absolutely ecstatic, squealing with happiness," dad Charley, who was in L.A. to cover the show, tells Star in an exclusive interview. "She told me, 'Daddy, I had a gut feeling all day that he was going to win!' Then this morning, David actually called Lindsey directly! I can't begin to describe what a wonderful guy he is, and what his support has meant to my daughter and our entire family." Lindsey and David are hoping to meet in person when the American Idol tour swings through Florida.

Well, I'm an idiot. I knew that David was wearing the bracelet for a young girl who was a cancer patient. I also knew that her name was Lindsay. What I didn't know was that she is Charlie Belcher's daughter. I'm in Tampa and have watched Charlie do AI reporting for years. I had no idea that the two were linked.

David Cook rocks for caring about a kid he doesn't even know this way.

This little girl is definitely going to beat this disease! The power of happiness and positive thinking cannot be denied. David is helping her win this battle, and so he is really her knight in shining armor. My heart is full to bursting.

What a lovely caring guy David is. Its so typical of him to make time to call Lindsey himself and I am thrilled for her that she'll get to meet him when the tour comes near where she lives. Its going to be a very moving moment when that happens. I'm so proud of he way he has handled everything throughout the competition and since he won and hope that Lindsey is making good progress in her battle.
