QUOTE (Pam08 @ Aug 18 2008, 04:26 PM)

I honestly think it hasn't been released because David and RCA are probably trying to line things up and decide when it will be released. I don't think they are ready yet. Yes, TOML has done exceptionally well but I don't think we have solid proof that this song is holding a new single back. David had been saying all along late September/early October and that was as long as things were going well with the recording process with the album. He had said last week that the reason he hadn't been coming out after shows was because he was working on the record and that was the only time he had to work on it and that's of course on show nights not counting days they have off. We can't really assume anything when we don't know what is going on behind the scenes.
I agree with you. I bet he is busy every minute at this point. A lot of pressure to get that CD out ontime and have it be good. Not good.....great. It always seems to take longer for the recording process to happen than they first figure.

Sunday at midnight is the cutoff for iTunes. There's no way he's passing 236k. Still is his numbers are very good considering it's been 3 months since the finale. I honestly think this year both boys are going to do very well once their albums come out. Jordin is a poor comparison because already Archie has beat her in first week sales for This is My Now AND Tattoo. I think Jordin's Tattoo sold like 33,000 it's first week. Both David's have much larger fanbases than Jordin and Blake had last year.

If you look at what I posted yesterday for Top 40 and today spin wise you will see a 3 spin drop. The other 2 charts showed about that much of a gain for the other 2 formats. I think it's still good for a song like this all things considering.

yeah. Maybe it will sell around 30k this week. I wonder who are the Amazon customers. The song has been top 10 from the begining. It's even ahead of Archie's Crush, which is so new. I find it interesting that he appeals the Amazon customers...

Probably B101 FM. My mother-in-law (my partner's mom) lives in Philly and heard it there months ago... I told her to connect the dots... she's been listening to and loving the object of my obsession... she didn't realize it was David, and so she laughed and then downloaded it on itunes immediately, while I was on the phone with her (LOL!). I love her - she proves that 76-year-olds have ipods and download music just like the youngin's!
Of course my partner got even MORE annoyed because he's just about had it with my obsession.. and now his mother is fueling it!!!

I just thought I'd share a radio story here. 101.9 in Montgomery (Hot AC) has been playing Cookie a lot during lunchtime. Twice the DJ has taken the time to talk about his album -- how it's going to be a rock album, Cook wants it to be continuous, TOML probably won't be on it, etc. The second time he actually encouraged the listeners to go out and buy it - and I'm thinking that's rare for radio. Rarely have I heard DJs push the audience forward like that with anything they play, particularly an AI coronation song! It goes to show that there are people out there who are excited about him and are looking forward to what he has to put out in the future.

I'm so sick of Top 40 in general. One blah, sound-alike song after another. I suffer through it some Saturday mornings trying to see where TOML places on American Top 40 and it's painful. Yesterday I listend up to #17 just to see what's out there. One R&B whining song after another. I do like Rihanna's Disturbia. I don't know why. And I was always a Madonna fan. But all these croony, hip hop, filled-with-runs songs all sound like they came out of the same hit-factory. Give me alternative rock... or commercial rock like Daughtry, ANY DAY!

Hard to say. If it gets one more Olympics airing, that will keep it going in sales and radio requests unitl the end of the AI Tour. Other than that, these things always seem so random to me. I suppose it will start declining in September. Probably not quickly though. It's got a solid place on many AC stations' playlists. Especially powerhouse WPLJ in NY, which is kind of rock/pop/AC similar to KBIG in LA. WPLJ has been much kinder to TOML... they play it much more often than KBIG does.

LOL! That's a really really good question. On 8/12, (Tuesday), we had no station adds from a monitored station. That was the first time that had happened since the song initially went for adds on 6/3 and then this past Tuesday WLAN in Lancaster, PA was the lone monitored top 40 station that picked it up. If TOML were to get aired tonight on the Olympics for one last time, that would probably give it another sales boost that would show up in next week's numbers. As far as the decline goes, my guess would be September too but it's really hard to say. I don't think we will see a huge surge in the sales numbers this week since TOML hasn't been covered on the Olympics for a while and isn't on the front page of i-tunes this week as it was the previous week.

I think September it will start dropping on Pop, and it shouldn't be surprising when it does to be honest because I'm shocked it's done as well as it has there. The way it's hung in is amazing. AC & Hot AC will be a much slower drop because AC stations will stick with a song as long as it's high up and keep playing it. WLTW/106.7 the #1 AC station in the country has him #2 on their playlist..as long as he's that high on a station like that it will have a long shelf life there (they still play Kelly's a Moment Like this often LOL) Getting to #1 on AC isn't as easy as it seems because bullets overall fluctuate so often and flip flop back and forth. One day Leona and Sarah will have huge spin losses, then two days later their bullets can skyrocket. I think every AC station (or pretty damn close to it) may have TOML on their playlist though.

There are morning and afternoon updates with Mediabase. Looks like Magic Rainbow is dropping again on pop and Hot AC, but considering how well it's done so far, it's still not doing badly.

I know they are showing a spin gain on pop and Hot AC, but this is a 7-day report.

Tee--
Pam knows more than I do, but don't think this has do with with sales at all. It's radio stations (of various formats) feeling the need to play the song. The program director may personally like it, but usually they want to give listeners what they like. The best way to get spins at this point is through requests from listeners. Email the station in your market that plays it, call the request line, bombard them with requests. RCA did some good marketing last month for TOML, but now it's up to David's fans, and the general radio audience members who hear TOML and like it enough to request it.
Pam08
Aug 27 2008, 01:06 PM
Tee,
Actually, there are still a few stations still adding TOML to their playlists even though it has been almost 3 months since the song officially went for adds on June 3rd. I think one of the big factors in TOML staying in the top 100 on i-tunes for so long has been the airplay it has received because it was slowly dropping on i-tunes before then and once the airings of TOML on the Olympics happened, we saw huge surges of over 40K in some cases but once the airplay on the Olympics was over, TOML was back on the front page of i-tunes for a week and that probably gave the song a nice cushion when otherwise the sales would have took a bigger hit.
Scott,
Actually, you made some good points. However, the PD's don't really like being bombarded by fanbases with requests though. If they sense an organized effort, then they will pull back. Other fanbases have done this and it's been proven it doesn't work. I have seen this happen with a few of them. This is where it pays to have faith in RCA's marketing strategy and let them do their job. As far as the DJ's wanting requests, I believe they do most certainly want people requesting the song as long as there are not hearing from the same folks all the time and they aren't calling multiple times in a day or week. lol Singles are usually tested by the general public in the early stages and if they test well (according to Kirsten at mj's blog TOML did) then it can bode well for the single. If the single doesn't test well with the general public (as was the case with Blake Lewis' 2nd single) then the song won't be picking up spins for long and will soon run out of gas.

That's kind of what I meant. Definately NOT an organized thing!! But if you decide once or twice in a week to let the station know you like the song and want to hear it, that's cool. Must be random. I might email commercial rock station KYSR 98.7 saying I want to hear TOML and to also bring back Daughtry. TOML isn't really in their format, but they do play Gavin Rossdale's "The Same" which is pretty soft rock if you ask me. But I'll only make the request once. As for Daughtry, they used to play them all the time, but then they sort of shifted them over to their sister station, KBIG, where TOML is also played. Both stations are owned by ClearChannel. All the "big" Idols are played by KBIG - Kelly, Jordin, Carrie (not Clay). No complaints about David & Daughtry being on KBIG 'cause honestly, they have higher ratings and are quite rock oriented for an AC station. They just have a huge playlist and will go back to the 80s with their stuff.

I monitor the airplay on the yes.com site and I notice that KBIG plays TOML a lot! I've seen what they play too and the list is very diverse. I agree about Gavin Rossdale. The same is DEFINITELY a soft rock song. No question about that. lol

Pam, I think I heard everything on that list in the last 2 days! I don't mind listening to KBIG... they are a very unusual station. ClearChannel has several LA stations... as does CBS Radio. KOST is a huge ratings grabber for ClearChannel but they play dentist office soft rock and love songs. You'll hear Lionial Richie's "Hello" there! I can't stand them long enough to hear if KOST plays TOML... I'll have to check yes.com! KBIG is really quite good when I don't feel the need to totally rock out... they play the Police, the Killers, The Cure, lots and lots of Coldplay and U2, along with Jordin Sparks and Jasan Mraz. KYSR 98.7 plays all the current alternative and commercial rock but also lots of grunge.. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots, and that's why I prefer 98.7 and really hope David's music will be played there AND KBIG.
Edit 3:32pm PST: Well I'll be a monkey's uncle! KOST just played TOML 2 minutes ago, at 3:30pm!! That's 2 stations it's on in LA, KBIG and KOST, and those stations have big numbers!! And it's #3 on their top song list!
Now I just checked yes.com for KBIG and they played TOML just as KOST played it (a minute later) and it's listed as #1 on their Top Songs list! Can that be right?

Yeah, I think it could be.

The HAC station here just played TOML about 17 minutes ago. WGNI, that's me.

The PD called him American Idol Winner David Cook. David apparently has a ton of fans around here because they were getting a lot of requests for TOML and almost exactly 2 weeks after the finale, they started playing it and have been ever since. I'll be glad when they just call him David Cook, but at this point they say that if they want as long as they play the song.

I just checked yes.com for the two other powerhouse stations I know of, WPLJ in NY and B101 (WBEB) in Philly and both have TOML in the top 5 on their playlists and most popular... #3 on WBEB's song log! I shouldn't be surprised... it's parked there in Billboard's Hot AC charts right now. I don't think it will have slipped at all on tomorrow's charts. It may be losing steam in sales, but it's only now peaking in radio play! BTW, KBIG never refers to AI at all... they don't always identify all songs played verbally, but when they do they only say David Cook... it's been that way since they started playing TOML more than 2 months ago.

It looks like this morning we have spin loss on all 3 formats. If you notice, the rank on Top 40 is up 1 this morning compared to yesterday morning's chart which is on this page a few posts above.

From what Kirsten at mj's blog explained to us, when the rank goes up while the spins are going down, this is what you call "falling up" the chart. lol All things considered, this song has done extremely well for a coronation song.
