Good lord, the damned thing won't die! Well, that's a good thing! But LO might have to wait a little longer until there's more room for it at some stations. TOML is most certainly assured Platinum now. It just needs 5 weeks averaging 15k in sales. This week will probably be closer to 16k. I think AC stations will play it for years to come, and it will be used as "uplifting music" in news and sports montages for years to come as well. The song just works on so many levels. How many of us underestimated it when we first heard it on 5/21?

*sheepishly raises hand*
I,uh, kinda did.... i'm sorry... i thought it was just a coronation song and it was so NOT him (at first).
but after the tour and all that backstory with regie hamm.... it started to have a whole new dimension to it.
and yeah its becoming an inspirational song.... a song to overcome adversity, a song to validate a momentous occasion. so yeah I'm starting to believe it could go the distance.

I am really a rock fan and don't like a lot of middle-of-the-road contemporary music (but there's some I do like if it's good). I've got to say, TOML is a very good song that David made great. I think my own prejudices worked against embracing it at the beginning. But it really showcases David's alpha wave-generating "crushed velvet" voice, it's very catchy, and it holds sentimental meaning for me (what obsessed DC fan could not be sentimental about TOML by now?). And the Regie Hamm back-story definitely made me look at the song in a whole new way.

Bioguy did a great post a couple of months ago about why David's recording of TOML works so well. Basically, it's because David took the "less is more" approach and resisted extra runs and flourishes, which would have turned it into schmaltz. Even that glory note toward the end is somewhat restrained... proving how spot-on David's instincts are as a musician, singer and recording artist.

Oh gosh (TM Archie) me. Totally. All the way. * really small voice * As much as it's grown on me, I can still only take the accoustic version seriously as a piece of music. I'm a bad cynical monster, but at least I'm aware of that. But it accomplished its goal. Nay, it obliterated its goal. So for that, yay MR!!
Also, I'm sort of hoping the the bonus track on the album is a studio recorded accoustic version.

Widz, I just posted on another thread about that... but you know what, it's not as bad as I expected. We're not surprised because we saw LO sink into the 60s on itunes top songs yesterday... and quickly into the 30s last week... but I thought it might sell less than 25,000 based on those itunes rankings... that's what TOML sold when it was in those spots. But the first two days of the week must have seen some good sales, and LO is still doing well on amazon. So yes, it's not great to see, but for me it was better than I expected, so I'm ok. Watch those sales go up in 2 weeks after SNL and more radio play!
audrey
Take heart widz - how could LO sell if it was not being played. In the last two days we have had 100 spins a day and people are hearing it. The public do not know he has a single out unless they hear it. Only the DC fans know all the ins and outs. He had absolutely no promotion and now he is out and about promoting the album. I believe like Scott that this was a deliberate ploy in order to make the splash out just prior to the album release. Rock fans I believe do not download from itunes and albums are the important issue here. I myself do not download unless I have to and prefer the cds which I can listen to at will at that is at home. He did sell 109,000 without any promotion at all. You will see more movement now and what I care about is the sales of the album.
Pam08
Widz,

Yeah, I saw that. That was to be expected with the small amount of airplay David has right now. The song seems to really be taking off on Hot AC but on top 40, it seems to be slipping. I think this song will do very well on the Hot AC format. Hopefully, in the next few weeks, we will see a resurgence on pop. It's been on kind of a yo-yo ride with that format.

To add to what Scott and Audrey said, Rock songs are not usually the blockbuster sellers whereas pop songs will sell like hotcakes (TOML).

Pam/Scott/Anyone who clearly knows more than me on this - why do you think LO isn't doing as well in Top 40 as HAC? While it clearly has a rock vibe to it, I think its very listenable and radio-friendly to a non-rock fan as well. I really thought/think it would do well in this format. Am I off base in this thinking?

No, I wouldn't say you are off base. smile.gif I love it and think it's a great song but I think maybe part of the problem is that it's not some of the annoying generic pop songs that are getting airplay right now. Those are the songs that the listening public seem to respond to. Even though we despise Womanizer, those type of songs are what is getting airplay right now and Jordin. They are both Jive artists and when you look at the callout scores for their songs, they are pretty much through the roof. Jive artists seem to have an easier time getting airplay when the right song comes out.

I am another nondownloader.

If TOML had a physical single, I would've bought a few copies for myself and several for my friends.

(If TOML had a physical single with ABMB on the back, it would have been double platinum a long, long time ago.)

I don't care much which version, but I would still like TOML as a bonus track, too.

Especially since the Regie Hamm story really captured my heart!

I like rock, but I am not a rock snob. I enjoy lots of genres of music as long as the artist has a real voice - not necessarily meaning physical voice, but an artistic voice is a must for me.

I am wondering how many of us out here are non-ipod owners who have just been waiting for the CD.

If my theory is right, it should reflect in CD sales.

When toml becomes platinum, the publicity will be huge. Sales will get it there perhaps coinciding with David's album release. So people need to buy on itunes to increase sales.
Kitkat
I never had downloaded a single song until David came along. I didn't even have things set up to do so, nor did I have a desire to do it. He was my only incentive. Now I have 93 songs downloaded, only one of which is not David-related (I have Axium, AI stuff, AH, MWK, and THH). If a lot of his fans are like me, they may still not be downloaders and will be lining up for the CD instead. It is possible.

yep me too...non-downloader, here! something about digital technology and me don't get along together.... go figure!

but I'm just dying for the CD to come out! I, like, hyperventilated, when I saw that CD cover and track listing the first time since it signified that the record is REAL, you know?

Yeah, I guess you guys are right..
That's why I love this board (this thread specifically) so much! Sensible people that does not let me be paranoid laugh.gif
I just hope that the media wouldn't be harsh on LO and David..
Or maybe 19/RCA is steering the media's attention to the album cover/tracklist..

I saw the RS and EW articles..tongue.gif
Scott
The thing that puts my mind at ease today is simply this: If the label and TPTB don't seem bent out of shape over LO at this point, then I'm not worried. It seems they really are pushing for the album, and that they hope LO will pick up right before the album drops. It's a great strategy. And with the barrage of David-related stuff today... more radio interviews, great RS & EW write-ups, SNL and the vlog, I'm thrilled. The promo machine has begun! And we're really seeing David highlighted in the rock genre... especially with Rolling Stone and the Variety article the other day.
lauramac
I also think we need to remember that LO and TOML will be on the album. Many people won't download one or two songs from David when they can get the entire album on November 18. I also agree that there has been little promotion at this point, but David is out there now promoting himself and his music. We know how much talent he has and what a great and humble guy he is. LO is a great song and who the masses hear it, they will love it too.

I'm curious, what constitutes as an Active spin?

It's a type of the rock format. Scott showed us something I think earlier this week that gave us a list of definitions but here is Wiki's:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_rock

QUOTE
Active rock is a radio format used by many commercial radio stations across Canada and the United States. Active rock plays current rock artists with a mix of classic rock songs. An active rock station may include songs by known and popular artists such as Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, and AC/DC in its playlist. Whereas a modern rock or classic rock station would not. Similar to active rock stations, mainstream rock stations play current rock music, but concentrate more on classic rock than active rock stations do.

You are so right. I grew to love TOML over the summer, and over the past 6 weeks I've come to understand its success. I really showcases his "crushed velvet" voice. America really LOVES this song. It's a mega-hit. I suspect platinum will happen around the time David's new album drops. Both the album and LO (as it starts climbing up itunes again) will boost TOML sales... enough to do the trick. David LOVES the song too... Neal and Andy told me we can count on him singing it in at least the next couple of concert tours. It's very sentimental to him, a whole new legion of fans have embraced it, and he always gets a great sing-along in concert!

Scott, as a sidenote, PLEASE do not leave this site. I find it so much more personal and personable than DCO, although I do lurk over there. Your level head and vast knowledge of the industry have many times kept me from stressing out over things I perceive as injustices to DC. What you say always makes perfect sense to me, and kicks me out of thinking with my emotions and using the practical side of my brain, although it is VERY HARD to be practical where DC is concerned. I want him #! EVERYWHERE!!!!

Also, I have also had both of my computers crash because of spam, pop-ups, and viruses. Very frustrating, to say the least. I download a program called "StopZilla," which has pretty much cured the problem (although not totally...a few still make it through). Since 10/4/08, it has blocked 3442 pop-ups and I don't know how many viruses.

Take care, and good luck with your quest to hear DC on the radio. I heard it for the first time Saturday and about wrecked by car!!!!
