Below is our word of the day...it changes daily...

Word of the Day

beckHEARTSdc
so shall we try using it in a sentence somewhere else on the board? smile.gif

Vicky
You know what I love? I love that because DC's a word nerd, DC fans the world over now have an obsession with words...and if they were already word nerds prior to DC, well, it's just makes people more outspoken about it. smile.gif
Miss Nickie
Oooh that's a new one to my vocabulary. I knew about eloquent, but not eloquence. Thanks Travis biggrin.gif
M@r!3
Heyyy!
I love this word. I used to use it all the time, until I just got weird looks.
BUT! Now that David Cook is famous, being a word nerd is popular. wink.gif

I'm the same way. I've been a word nerd and had an extensive vocabulary for years. I've often had to simplify or define what I say because I'll use a word that the person I'm talking to doesn't know. And I still have to, but at least I know now that I'm not alone in this!! David is a fellow word nerd, and I've found a ton more here!!
AzRockGirl
It goes the same way for me. I have always had a larger vocabulary due in part to my stupendous English teachers that placed me into advanced classes. I guess you could say I have always had slightly above average linguistic skills. I am delighted to see that there are many others out there like me, especially one that is now so immersed into the public eye.

i'm wondering what will be the word of the day today... smile.gif
cookie jar
it's cute that you are doing this... will there be a record of the words kept somewhere?

dictionary.com has a word of the day application that you can add to your igoogle home page. i've have it on mine for a long time now (way before DC). today's word there is forgo: to do without smile.gif
dcookie94
hell, i'm kind of a word nerd too. i don't get things from my english teacher that much so i just take a peek in handy dictionaries to know what these new words i find mean.. and then yeah. i eventually use them. with diaries. because if i speak that way, people are gonna like freak out and oh..whatever. at least i have you people! fellow word nerds. hehe. *wink*
sunshine girl
fantastic! Hit us up again today, travis!!
Krista
for real!
MySonsASoldier
For those of us who grew up with an extensive vocab, this idea is a magnanimous gesture! I, for one, am tired of having to talk down to the general public so that JohnQ can understand what I'm saying! ( My mom was declared "The Walking Encyclopedia" as the validictorian for her senior class at a prestigious midwest university.) Consequently, my introduction to language was high-brow verbage. However, it was never viewed as "Nerdy" because she was also anything but a four-eyed bookworm, she was gorgeous, and became an accomplished pianist!
Any hooo... thanks for the attempt to polish the utterances of the masses! (Now, if we could just get them to use these lofty communicatives in proper context....ahhh well....I'll save that for still another day!:)smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

I'll bet English teachers around the world (any teachers, for that matter) are so happy that DC won. lol. He makes learning new words fun! (:

This is awesome! I'm one of those pre-cook word nerds and I freaked when i found out he was. I've come out about it now, I often use my big vocab when I'm nervous and it turns people off or when I use it normally people always look at me weird or ask me what the heck I'm talking about. Now I really don't care and do it anyway.
xMakeMeFeelItx
I'm one of those MAJOR word nerds who can't help but look up the meaning of new words when they were 13. My Mum isnt great with English, so I have to explain myself if I go into wordy mode [usually when I've been reading Hawthorne] - I've been on DoctorDictionary for a while now.

Everyone be sure to attend David's inaugral arena concert with the other nine American Idols finalists -- the first of many arena shows he'll have throughout his illustrious career!

Okay... so what's today's word? 5/28/08
*InlovewithDC*
Yeah, what's today's word? Does the first person on here get to pick the new word of the day? I think we should pull a word from one of David's interviews as our word of the day. He uses plenty of good ones.

that's funny, me too... I've always found myself editing my conversation, trying not to use "big words"... thanks to DC, I've decided to just go with it and if people don't understand what I'm talking about they can ask... or get a dictionary! laugh.gif
plebejus`argus
psh.
I totally knew that word.

lol, but seriously this is pretty sweet.

EDIT: I never try to downplay my vocabulary,
I can't help it if I'm just more erudite than the average person.

Great word to use especially in an election year. i hate to keep comparing our cookie to sting but did you know sting was an english teacher before becoming front man for The Police? i think he might be the original "word nerd" (he also speaks 5 languages) it might make being smart cool again! cute and brainy, my favorite combination! laugh.gif

During David's inaugural performance as the newly crowned American Idol, a plethora of his fans jumped for joy while others wept along with him.

(I did both)...

The Word of the Day for May 28, 2008 is:
heliolatry • \hee-lee-AH-luh-tree\ • noun
: sun worship
Example Sentence:
The Egyptians, who personified the sun as the god Ra, were one of numerous ancient cultures that practiced heliolatry.
Did you know?
The first half of "heliolatry" derives from "hēlios," the Greek word for "sun." In Greek mythology, Hēlios was the god of the sun, imagined as "driving" the sun as a chariot across the sky. From "hēlios" we also get the word "helium," referring to the very light gas that is found in balloons and airships, and "heliocentric," meaning "having or relating to the sun as center," as in "a heliocentric orbit." The suffix "-latry," meaning "worship," derives via Late Latin and French from the Greek "latreia," and can be found in such words as "bardolatry" ("worship of Shakespeare") and "zoolatry" ("animal worship"). A person who worships the sun is called a heliolater.

I like merriamwebster.com and belong to their word of the day. This was today's word.

Cookiolatry...Cookiolaters? Is that what we are???

Ineffable

David

Into our lives
You came by chance,
To steal our hearts,
To chase the dark
With ineffable radiance.

Is it acceptable to propose a new DC word? I caught a good one in a recent interview. I'm new to this thread and a lifelong, terminal wordnerd. Not to mention a shameless fangirl of David. Facility with language is a serious aphrodisiac!

Honey bees dance to direct the other bees to David Cook.

ineffable

I was not only delirious when David was announced as the winner, but also my feelings of exuberance were ineffable.

There is an ineffable quality and tone to David Cook's voice which mesmerizes me and leaves me yearning for more after each performance.

DC is really unveiling my inner word nerd. i've never been an avid reader... but i've always loved writing. i have a strong soft spot for alliteration... it's my favorite thing ever. i also love playing with long and short syllables and choosing the best words in a sentence so it not only makes sense, but has a melodically pleasing rhythm. i use thesauraus.com a lot searching for that perfect word. of course this anal retentiveness doesn't apply to my posting. I used to keep a personal journal. i threw all my writing out about two years ago and i haven't written since. maybe i should start a blog. hmmm. the only thing i would want to write about now would probably be Cookie anyway. haha...

anyway... one entirely too long post later,

I like today's word:

Upon the conclusion of my encounter with my favorite Idol, I stepped aside and stood shaking with shock and ineffable joy.

Baleful

With menace in his smile,
Simon heaped his scorn
And cast a baleful eye
At David.
Who slowly raised his brow,
Then raised his lovesome voice
And brought intoxication.

May I suggest a word for today?

Greetings all!

I've always been a bit of a word-nerd myself, always having excelled in English, particularly spelling. I remember switching schools in the fifth grade and the school that I moved to thought that they were SO advanced (especially since I was moving from a rural area to a suburban setting), so they tested me to find what LEVEL I was at. My math skills, sadly, were lacking (as always and they still are), but I was reading and spelling at an 8th grade level, to which they were a bit shocked. My parents weren't. I've always had an extensive vocabulary and was curious and inquisitive about the meaning of words at a very young age.

I love the fact that David's word-nerd-dom has extended to his "plethora" (his favorite word - according to the interview he gave with TV Guide? I think?) of fans. Not only is he entertaining the masses, but educating them as well. When he used the word "ancillary" during his interview on the Mike and Juliet Show, I was waiting for her to ask what that meant. smile.gif

For those of you budding-word-nerds, here are the definitions:

PLETHORA - overabundance, excess (archaically referred to a blood condition - too many red corpuscles in the blood or an increased amount of blood)

ANCILLARY - having a secondary nature, subordinate, subsidiary

Looking forward to more nerdy words,

~Kristen smile.gif

Simon's comments on Tuesday night eluded to baleful results, but in the end our hero's talent was vindicated by America's vote to name David Cook their American Idol.
