You know what I love? I love that because DC's a word nerd, DC fans the world over now have an obsession with words...and if they were already word nerds prior to DC, well, it's just makes people more outspoken about it.

Heyyy!
I love this word. I used to use it all the time, until I just got weird looks.
BUT! Now that David Cook is famous, being a word nerd is popular.

I'm the same way. I've been a word nerd and had an extensive vocabulary for years. I've often had to simplify or define what I say because I'll use a word that the person I'm talking to doesn't know. And I still have to, but at least I know now that I'm not alone in this!! David is a fellow word nerd, and I've found a ton more here!!

It goes the same way for me. I have always had a larger vocabulary due in part to my stupendous English teachers that placed me into advanced classes. I guess you could say I have always had slightly above average linguistic skills. I am delighted to see that there are many others out there like me, especially one that is now so immersed into the public eye.

For those of us who grew up with an extensive vocab, this idea is a magnanimous gesture! I, for one, am tired of having to talk down to the general public so that JohnQ can understand what I'm saying! ( My mom was declared "The Walking Encyclopedia" as the validictorian for her senior class at a prestigious midwest university.) Consequently, my introduction to language was high-brow verbage. However, it was never viewed as "Nerdy" because she was also anything but a four-eyed bookworm, she was gorgeous, and became an accomplished pianist!
Any hooo... thanks for the attempt to polish the utterances of the masses! (Now, if we could just get them to use these lofty communicatives in proper context....ahhh well....I'll save that for still another day!:)

This is awesome! I'm one of those pre-cook word nerds and I freaked when i found out he was. I've come out about it now, I often use my big vocab when I'm nervous and it turns people off or when I use it normally people always look at me weird or ask me what the heck I'm talking about. Now I really don't care and do it anyway.

I'm one of those MAJOR word nerds who can't help but look up the meaning of new words when they were 13. My Mum isnt great with English, so I have to explain myself if I go into wordy mode [usually when I've been reading Hawthorne] - I've been on DoctorDictionary for a while now.

During David's inaugural performance as the newly crowned American Idol, a plethora of his fans jumped for joy while others wept along with him.
(I did both)...
The Word of the Day for May 28, 2008 is:
heliolatry • \hee-lee-AH-luh-tree\ • noun
: sun worship
Example Sentence:
The Egyptians, who personified the sun as the god Ra, were one of numerous ancient cultures that practiced heliolatry.
Did you know?
The first half of "heliolatry" derives from "hēlios," the Greek word for "sun." In Greek mythology, Hēlios was the god of the sun, imagined as "driving" the sun as a chariot across the sky. From "hēlios" we also get the word "helium," referring to the very light gas that is found in balloons and airships, and "heliocentric," meaning "having or relating to the sun as center," as in "a heliocentric orbit." The suffix "-latry," meaning "worship," derives via Late Latin and French from the Greek "latreia," and can be found in such words as "bardolatry" ("worship of Shakespeare") and "zoolatry" ("animal worship"). A person who worships the sun is called a heliolater.
I like merriamwebster.com and belong to their word of the day. This was today's word.
Cookiolatry...Cookiolaters? Is that what we are???

DC is really unveiling my inner word nerd. i've never been an avid reader... but i've always loved writing. i have a strong soft spot for alliteration... it's my favorite thing ever. i also love playing with long and short syllables and choosing the best words in a sentence so it not only makes sense, but has a melodically pleasing rhythm. i use thesauraus.com a lot searching for that perfect word. of course this anal retentiveness doesn't apply to my posting. I used to keep a personal journal. i threw all my writing out about two years ago and i haven't written since. maybe i should start a blog. hmmm. the only thing i would want to write about now would probably be Cookie anyway. haha...
anyway... one entirely too long post later,
I like today's word:
Upon the conclusion of my encounter with my favorite Idol, I stepped aside and stood shaking with shock and ineffable joy.

Greetings all!
I've always been a bit of a word-nerd myself, always having excelled in English, particularly spelling. I remember switching schools in the fifth grade and the school that I moved to thought that they were SO advanced (especially since I was moving from a rural area to a suburban setting), so they tested me to find what LEVEL I was at. My math skills, sadly, were lacking (as always and they still are), but I was reading and spelling at an 8th grade level, to which they were a bit shocked. My parents weren't. I've always had an extensive vocabulary and was curious and inquisitive about the meaning of words at a very young age.
I love the fact that David's word-nerd-dom has extended to his "plethora" (his favorite word - according to the interview he gave with TV Guide? I think?) of fans. Not only is he entertaining the masses, but educating them as well. When he used the word "ancillary" during his interview on the Mike and Juliet Show, I was waiting for her to ask what that meant.

For those of you budding-word-nerds, here are the definitions:
PLETHORA - overabundance, excess (archaically referred to a blood condition - too many red corpuscles in the blood or an increased amount of blood)
ANCILLARY - having a secondary nature, subordinate, subsidiary
Looking forward to more nerdy words,
~Kristen
