How David Cook Put Me Back In Touch With Music Again
By Word Nerd # 2490

Until American Idol Season 7 came along, I was {Livin’ on a Prayer’} as far as music goes. Songs and artists that could touch my soul were few and far between.
However, when David Cook came onto my screen with a song and his smile, I felt as if he was telling me {Everything I Do, I Do It For You}.
I thought, “{I’ll Be} voting for him definitely!”
When he made it to the Top 24 I knew that we would be {Happy Together} for a little while longer.
I would sit through the weekly episodes anxiously anticipating DC’s performance and then I could sigh, I’m {All Right Now}.
I was already investing in him as an artist, but like most viewers he had me at {Hello}.
His Top 12 song haunted me so much that entire week that I began to think my name was {Eleanor Rigby}.
I knew David was no {Day Tripper}, because with his perfomances he took me all the way there.
Just like in {Billie Jean}, my eyes dreamed of being the one, David Cook was singing to each week.
But just as a {Little Sparrow}soars high in the air, I knew David’s path was much different than mine and I would be content to watch him soar.
His {Innocent} heart was made obvious by the ‘AC’ on his guitar and the ‘orange bracelet’ on his arm, so who would not be inspired by this man to ‘Give back.’
It was clear after each successive week that although I would never know him personally, he would {Always Be My Baby} through his music.
In the daytime, his songs playing in the background would help me get my work done and in my dreams{The Music of the Night} would touch my soul.
Each Tuesday when David sang I would feel like {I’m Alive} again, because music began to mean something to me once more.
I had to then admit that {All I Really Need Is You}, David, to keep singing songs which move me.
It was getting hard to make it through Thursdays to Mondays, because I was {Hungry Like the Wolf} for more.
{Baba O’Riley} put his back into his living, but I was putting mine into downloading his songs and searching the internet for more David Cook information.
I came across internet videos, interviews and articles which reminded me of {The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face}, David, and how your voice and smile lit up the room and stirred up my emotions.
I wanted to {Dare You to Move} me again like you had on the last song.
You met my challenge and {I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing} you do, whether it’s a song, an interview, or anything else.
As far as music lifting my spirits, my previous feelings that {I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For} was a thing of the past.
With David Cook’s artistry on the horizon I could now {Dream Big} about music again.
{The World I Know} would not be the same without David’s music bringing a smile to my face, a tear to my eye, touching me on every level.
I give many thanks to American Idol for showing David Cook to the world and to me, because now I am having {The Time of My Life}and enjoying music once again.

He got me from the moment the word 'Missouri' came out of his mouth.

I live in a suburb of St. Louis, and was pulling for him the whole time.

Musically, he had me from the moment he began the chorus of "Happy Together." Downloaded it the moment in was available on iTunes.
kycook
I for sure liked him from the very first audition. But honestly there were too many people for me to have my favorite until Eleanor Rigby. After that, i never looked back!

Thanks, Christina! I hadn't read anyone else's when I wrote it. I just saw the title of the thread and tried to think of a response and couldn't choose, because it was a process for me too. I grew more firmly attached to him with each song he sang and interview he did. I just had to put it on paper to release all my excitement about his win. But thanks for giving me the cake! rolleyes.gif

I liked his audition, but I melted at his rendition of Everythign I do (I do it for you) during Hollywood week. He had me there... my altime FAVORITE romantic song!!! I voted every week at least 10 times for him and even got 3 votes in during the finale

Let me start off by saying I am not an Idols fan. Don't like pop and hate the glitz and commercialisation that goes with Idols. I usually watch the auditions for a good laugh and then tune out. however this year was different - him and Michael Johns interested me from the beginning, found myself switching to Idols more and more during commercials trying to catch a glimpse of him. Then I switched over during Hello - that made me sit up and take notice. (even my 11 year old son, who has VERY strict metalhead musical taste left his computer game and came over to listen). I now started watching Idols for real, jsut to see what he did next Missed Eleanor Rigby due to circumstances outside my control, then saw Day Tripper. Very funky and great voice. I couldn't wait for next performance. Then came Bille JEan. OMG - I was hooked. Started surfing the net, downloading songs etc and listenting to them OVER AND OVER AND OVER again ( I think 'All I really need is you got over 30 listens in one day.) From there on he just hooked me more and more. ..... Went into work on Sundays and public holidays just to get to the net (home connection too slow), watched performances over and over etc etc.....

All time faves from IDols:
The world I know
The first time ever
Bille Jean
Thereafter it's a toss-up between
Baba O Riley/ Always be my baby / All I ever need is you

Actually I find it hard to choose between the rest - I love all of them (except Hungry like the wolf - done well, but I hate the song).

Okay, First thing first.... I'm new... in fact I never bother to go to any forum let alone about an artiste. But I was hooked. I only tuned in to AI for a good laugh during the audition. And I too tuned out. (Except for season 3, that's the first time AI was in Malaysia... Want to see what's the hype is about) During audition... I look at him... And hear him... Man he's good... And they put him through... YAY!!! (I'm a big rocker fan). Then I tuned out. Then come Dolly Parton week.. Is that the same guy??? So I keep tuning in thinking he's just a seasonal rocker... Then I watch some clips on you tube.... I am absolutely kicking myself for missing AI for too long.... angry.gif and come his always witty interview, and hello... and ABMB, and... and... (good song overload)... rolleyes.gif Completely nervous when I need to wait like 12 hours for the results to come halfway around the world.... sad.gif But I'm glad he won... Cant think of a better idol.. laugh.gif Now I'm officially Cookified. Cant live without hearing his voice even for a day...
Valkyrie
I watch all the audition stuff of every season of AI...I tend to watch up til the Top 12, then if no one jumps out at me I turn it off. Before this year, the only season I watched from beginning to end was season 3 (I think?) when Fantasia won. Her voice was so different...since AI? Not so much.

I immediately noticed David in his audition. The song caught my attention...I love Bon Jovi, and he did it amazing justice. I remember telling myself "He'll be in the Top 24." And then he was! When he walked on that stage and ripped off "Happy Together," I fell off the couch. I knew he was good, but damn! By the time he did "Hello," I was hooked completely. As each week went on, I found myself waiting for his performance. I was the only person I knew who had Chris Cornell's album and knew that version of Billie Jean...and when David sang it, I was slammed back in my seat. "Holy Crap! He's can really win this thing."

Every week got more and more amazing. By Always Be My Baby, I was in love...I couldn't remember the last time a performer made me smile before he ever opened his mouth to sing.

Music of the Night was a revelation for me...I am a HUGE Phantom fan...seen the play a few times and MOTN is such an iconic, powerful, sexy song and I honestly admit to being worried when he said that's what he was singing. Very few people have the ability to sing that peice and even fall in the realm of worthy...but when he hit that note on the word "be" in the middle of the song, I literally fell over sideways on my couch. "And David Cook walks away with Idol." Seriously, I told my friend that after watching the show and she laughed at me...said it was all Archie. Pfft!

I have never, NEVER invested myself in a singer like I have with David. I can't make it through a day without listening to him and just talking or thinking about him puts this goofy grin on my face...and it's not just the voice, or the looks, or the genuinely humble sweet personality...it's the whole package. Whatever that "it" factor is? David has it in spades and I can't wait to see what he does with the chance he's been given. And it kills me to know I won't get to go to the AI tour (broke college student)...but I impatiently wait for his album and the inevitable tour to go along with it...that one I WILL NOT miss.

I had the same worried feeling when he said he had chosed MOTN before the performance. After all, the song is a musical seduction. The Phantom is trying to win Christine with the power of his voice. I don't think there are alot of singers who can really pull that off!

But David just blew me away. What he accomplished that night was the musical seduction of millions of women! Pretty amazing stuff. And when I listen to the audio studio version I realize he could have performed with the Phantom mask and still have been awesome.

Yeah, that note on the word "be", held and then cut off spectacularly, and then he looks down for a sec, then looks right into the camera with that awesome closeup, and in that tender voice sings "only then can you belong to me"....

On the night of the performance my husband and I were sitting there watching, me mesmerized to the screen, and when David finished singing, I said, let's rewind and watch that again.... LOL

Hmm... I was able to watch AI when they were down to top 24, and I noticed DC then.

At first I was in denial that I like this guy, but eventually gave in to the truth during top 6.

I remember when Phantom first came to LA. I wondered what the heck all of the excitement was about. Then I saw Michael Crawford perform MOTN on a TV show with Dale Christien. Whoa! I GOT IT! I GOT IT! Talk about seductive! Ended up seeing MC in Phantom a number of times.

Fast forward to David singing MOTN. Wondered - Hmmmm, how will this work out? ALW had, after all, originally planned on having a rocker perform in the role. Well, DC sang it straight and blew me away! Given more time to prepare and he'd be fantastic in the role. It's important for the Phantom to be a sympathetic character and not just some crazy maniac! We'd all be aching for Christine to want to be with DC's Phantom!

Anyway, it's one thing to see him do MOTN with those soulful eyes mesmerizing you. It's another to be totally entranced listening strictly to the audio without that darling face to distract you. I could - and do! - listen to him sing MOTN over and over again. <sigh>

!!!!!!!!!!FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!!
it wasn't his looks, hell, it wasn't even his singing that had me, it was something else............?
unlike many, he didn't have me at HELLO, he had me at "for sure." i was not watching the auditions. i was just listening. i like doing that so appearance does not influence my like or dislike of a sound. i was studying for biochemistry, and concentrating on it so a voice really had to stand out in order to make me look up at the screen. since i had sort of tuned out the intro parts, i didnt know it was DAVID COOK singing, all i remember was hearing this strong masculine voice and thinking, hmm, NICE. but i still had not looked up to see the person singing. since he had a bit more of my attention, i heard the judges comments and heard them refer to him as David. they all liked him, i did too. then randy starts telling him to work on some persona and david responds "for sure." i don't know what exactly it was about that, its still kind of a mystery to me. there was a distinct tone, an honesty, sincerity, and gentleness of his speaking voice that so contrasted his powerful living on a prayer rendition. yet that soft "for sure" was more powerful because it compelled me look up to the screen on my computer (mex airs episodes 2 weeks behind , so i chose to download this year.) without more delay, i rewound this scene so i could watch and pay attention to his intro part as well. i found out this guy was DAVID COOK, promising to "bring something a little different to the table", claiming to be "versatile vocally" and a "personable guy." I made a mental note to follow David Cook.
so there you have it-- he caught my attention with his singing, but he really dug that first hook into my heart with "for sure", took me on a pretty awesome ride, and proved his introduction right. congratulations Mr. Cook.

From the time I saw the initial audition, I thought DC was great and would go far...but I would have to say that besides numerous performances on AI, "Music of the Night" did it for me! Such an authentic performance of a classical theatre song, not everyone can pull off the vocal talent!

I guess when I first realized that he was gonna be "IT" was when he sang "Heaven" during Hollywood week. That's one of my fav songs--LOVE Bryan Adams-- and when Simon said the thing about being lost without the guitar, I got all defensive for him and yelled, "The guitar doesn't have ANYTHING to do with his voice, you S*i*head. If you don't put him through, I'm gonna come out there and throttle you!". I was SO relieved when Paula and Randy put him through and when he showed up in that black shirt and pink tie, I knew I was in love. I was SO happy he got into the top 24, I almost peed myself.

sweetie, don't know if anyone has brought this to your attention yet, i haven't read past your post, so im sorry if it was already mentioned. i'm sure it was a simple mistake, cuz you got everything else right. however, David Cook sang Everything I Do by brian adams when simon made that comment about the guitar. then he sang "i'll be." it was David Archuleta that sang Heaven, which was also very nicely done.
lizajd
I liked DC's voice at the audition, he really grabbed me. But I thought he was so quirky looking. Kind of cute, but I really noticed his voice. When I saw the audition that Simon said "no", I thought DC was cuter, AND he had the voice. I liked him, but wasn't grabbed yet. I like It's All Right Now when I go back and watch it, but I didn't quite like his look that week. Then came Hello. OMG! I thought I would melt into the couch! Eleanor Rigby was amazing and Day Tripper, too. But when he sang Billie Jean, that is when I seriously wanted to only see him each week. And when he did Little Sparrow, I just thought I would die from his hotness! He looked so good. Of course, every week I wanted him to win even more. But my "obsession" for him didn't really take over my life till the night he won. I dreamed of him that night, and the next day I looked up everything I could on the computer. That was when I really knew I was Cookified! From then on, I have been madly crushing on him! I can't get through a minute now without thinking of him, or listening to his music, or watching a video, or reading an article about him, or being on this board! I have been soooooooo seduced by him. He is an amazing man with mega talent. The funny thing is that I hadn't watched Idol since the first season, except for a random show maybe once a year. But, for some reason, I caught it from the beginning with the auditions, and I was hooked this year. I am sooo glad, because I think this was a very special season. Not just because of our David, but there was a lot of talent this year, and they all seemed to really like and respect each other. It was wonderful to watch. But the coolest thing is that I got to see David from the beginning of his AI journey and watched his whole progression which turned out to be a subtle seduction of the female masses!

Anyway, I think Billie Jean was when I really started to want him to win.
ADS1259
From his first performance, not only his voice but it's his eyes, confident and sexy. Rock on David!
Frosty
He had me from his audition, usually I don't watch the audition episodes--but luckily I did this year!

Wow, I've just loved reading all these posts! I came into this season with very low expectations, since I'm a huge Daughtry fan and was certain there would never be anyone better coming out of AI. I didn't WANT to like anyone better than Chris. Boy, was I WRONG!!
Have to admit I didn't dig the red hair at the audition, but the voice was good and I was glad he made it into the top 24. I actually had Archie picked to win from the start, but Cookie caught my interest with the Word Nerd thing, because I'm one, too. Then we got to the top 12 and he did Eleanor Rigby (which I'm listening to on iTunes as I write) and blew me away. Loved the voice box on Day Tripper . . . and when he sang Billie Jean I texted my daughter: OMG, I think I'm in love! (This from a 56 year old married woman.) The last straw was The First Time Ever, which totally sent me over the edge. WOW! I knew there was no turning back after that. My family and friends think I'm nuts but, honestly, I can't help myself. Please, someone, tell me what it is about this guy?????
StitchMeUp
Well, he hooked me with his voice during Hello.

He hooked me with his looks during Little Sparrow.

He hooked me with his sexiness during Always Be My Baby.

But he didn't cause me to fall head over heels in this crush until watching his interviews after he won the show. Seriously, when it all came down to it, it was his personality that clenched it.

There was something intoxicating about him and when he sang Bon Jovi, the expression on his face was like 'OMG, I HAVE DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN AND AWOKE TO AN ANGEL SINGING TO ME'......I know Im obsessed, sorry, but it really is David's fault..lololololl

I would like to know when he got YOU...

Honestly I was hooked on his voice from the first auditions, but the look with the voice came together for me with Dolly week when he did Little Sparrow, and knowing now that he was feeling bad that night impresses me now even more that he could pull off that performance then go to the ER. But, as many others have said, the night the really sealed the deal for me was MOTN. We've all heard the AI contestants try to sing broadway songs and rarely do they hit the bar set by the Broadway stars, but I was blown away by DC's performance. When he said in an interview that he wanted an Oscar, and Emmy and a Tony I think he could do it. When he belted out that last section I literally caught my breath. I had it recorded and replayed his performance over and over. Last but not least was "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". That was the most heart melting performance of the entire season...by ANYONE!

I was hooked the first time I saw him and found out he was from MO, cause not many people from my neck of the woods make it on reality shows. And then I heard him SING in his audition, and that was the end. Rooted for him ever since. smile.gif
