There's a video of David singing this floating around on youtube so I figured I'd post lyrics for it. Correct me if i'm wrong!
Any second I would sing you to sleep
With kind words in mind and hearts on the sleeve
Leave nothing to chance and everything behind
Second chances pave the way to broken hearts
This is the moment where I tell you that I'm falling apart
And I'm stuck in reverse between the same damn lies
Oh no, there I go, optimistic to a fault
Go home, you can never go again
When anything at all is anything but you
I want nothing my dear
This always ends in tears
You were my everything in all
And now my everywhere but here
This always ends in tears
Second chances pave the wasy to broken hearts
This is the moment where I tell you that I'm falling apart
And I'm stuck in reverse between the same damn lies
We're tossing pennies, making wishes to make it right
Another lonely day another lonely night
And I would give anything if you would only pick up the phone
Oh no, there I go, optimistic to a fault
Go home, you can never go again
When anything at all is anything but you
I want nothing my dear
This always ends in tears
You were my everything in all
And now my everywhere but here
This always ends in tears

Thanks for posting!
"optimistic to a fault" is not the title:
It's pretty much common knowledge by now that David had been working on a second solo album before Idol. He said so in an interview and there's even been snippets from his old myspace blog posted in this site with a working list of songs that would be included in said album.
We all know this song is not on Analog Heart.
There is no song called "optimistic to a fault" on the song list (working song list...i know) for the second album.
So...what's the real song title? The choices are (as of Novemver 2007, see:
http://www.david-cook.org/index.php?showtopic=5237):- A Daily AntheM
- Chandeliers
- The Downfall
- Debutante
- Elizabeth
- Better Never Than Late
- We're Only Honest When We're Sleeping
- Eta Carinae
- A Dirty Shame
- Precious Decline

I love this song. If the title is really 'Optimistic to a Fault', then it's a great and fitting title. if not my guess would be... The Downfall

My guess would be "We're only honest when we're sleeping" because of the first line.

This song is absolutely AMAZING. Thank you so much for posting this! I really like his solo stuff.
I wonder if it's about anyone in particular.

I hope not. He sounds so sad.

This is one of my favorite non-AI songs of his.
Love the lyrics and the way he sings them.

I'm pretty sure this song is called Better Never Than Late. I love it, it's an AMAZING song! I have a question though, does anyone know the guitar chords for this? Maybe tabs?
