I think the "mystery people" are his step-sister (the one who subsequently had a baby) and maybe her husband.

Does anyone have a more complete video of David singing "I'll Be" during the 2nd Hollywood round? They play a small portion of it during the prepackage video before David sings "Happy Together". I would love to hear as much of the song as they let him sing. Simon said it was a "terrific audition".
