Barracuda Nixed

Remember that trio for the tour David Cook mentioned in his EW Idolatry interview? It had Carly Smithson singing “Barracuda” with Jason Castro on drums and Cook on guitar.

Sounds pretty sweet, doesn’t it? Too bad! According to some Castro insiders on Idol Forums, the entire number has been pulled. Also, a request for a Brooke White/Jason Castro duet (Jason said on Larry King Live that he’d like to do a duet with Brooke) has been denied by TPTB.

There are lots of rumors swirling around about why the song was nixed. The prevalent feeling is that TPTB don’t want to bring “too much attention to certain Idols” at the expense of others. Who knows? One thing is for certain, some of the Dreadheads are kinda pissed and sending out emails to everyone they can think of. Whoops!

David Cook to play for the Walmart shareholders on Friday

Like Idols before him (Jordin Sparks, Taylor Hicks and Carrie Underwood), I’m hearing via the AI forums at TWOP, that David Cook will perform a private concert for shareholders and associates on Friday. The concerts usually start around 11 am CT, and are streamed live on the Walmart website.

I don't see anything there for us to be paranoid about. Cookie is the winner and Archie is the runner up. It's as simple as that. The way I see it, TPTB don't want Jason to get too much attention from what I'm reading there.

i don't see how david and jason playing instruments for carly takes away attention from anyone else.

I don't either honestly, but if you back and read the first post here, 2nd paragraph, it's obvious to me that this is directed at Jason because Jason was supposed to play drums on the with Cookie and Carly and then Jason's duet with Brooke. It looks as if it's all about Jason not upstaging the others from the way I'm reading it.

Here is a scoop I got from one of Jason's fans. It's so obvious this was directed at him as far the comment of not outshining the others. Apparently during the Baracuda number, Jason was going to be be playing the drums shirtless and that was supposedly why the number was nixed and of course you see what happened with the Brooke duet that I finally edited in the first post.

Sorry, I honestly don't mean to step on any poster toes but ....

1, I imagine that the tour peeps have been tinkering with the set list as soon as they knew the Top 10 singers, which was a long time ago.
2, Great idea on paper for Barracuda number, but ... could be it just didn't seem that good in reality. There's the rest of the band to consider, too.
3, I don't see it as a dis to Castro. He was gonna be behind a drum kit. It's Carly out front singing lead, so it's her who would get the "attention" mostly on that song. It's coming across as a Jason Thing because it's his board talking about it ... not very objective, y/y? It seems the Castro fans are reading too much into the set list decisions and taking it personal, when it's not. Jason only told Larry King 2 weeks ago "he would like to do a duet" with Brooke - that doesn't mean it was talked about for the tour, it was hypothetical musing.
4. Concerts are pretty tightly wrapped, with time and sequence - cuz you have all the crew and setups and venue stuff to think about. ----- Could be they just couldn't fit it in the set list and still give all Top 8 3 songs each, Archie 4 songs, and Cook 5 songs, which is the drill they said on Larry King Live.
5, You figure full songs @ 3-4 min. Top 8 is 8 singers x 3 songs x 4 mins = 96 mins. Then Archie 20 min and Cook 30 min .... Plus a 10-6 group number and a 5-1 group number. You're over 2 hrs now, and it will probably be timed to @ 2 hr show, y/n? Thus, something's gotta give, and I wouldn't take it personal to any contestant.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't do even further group # cuts once the tour begins. Last year at the first show in Sunrise, FL, Blake and Melinda did a duet of the Fugees version of "Killing Me Softly". After the first show, it was cut and the fans were outraged. I got a chance to see the vid on youtube and it was incredible. So basically things like this do happen. Very good points you made there.

im super upset that the number was cut...it sounded like it was going to be amazing!

I'm a little upset about the Wal-Mart thing. I'm only upset cuz I work at walmart and im not going. I wish I would have signed up to go the shareholders meeting. If I would have known at the time that he was gonna be there, I would have went, just to see him. It would have made the last 4 years that i have worked at walmart finally worth something to me. Oh well i guess i will just have to find out who is goin from my store and see if they can get me an autograph or something...

Personally , I wish they would cut all of the large group numbers and allow time for trios/duets even if shortened versions of songs. Most of the large group numbers on idol were not good this year. As a group they had a difficult time with harmonies. Some of the contestants looked uncomfortable during them, and David himself said he was not fond of them, it's not his thing/style. It would make more sense to incorporate some smaller groups/pairings with performers with similar styles/tastes. They would enjoy it more, which means ultimately the audience will too. I hope they change their minds and allow Baracuda to happen, it would be fun to see/hear.

so...have him wear a shirt and play anyways...i really want to hear what these guys can do with their instruments.

I was really excited at the prospect of David on guitar and Jason on drums while Carly sang.

But I replayed Barracuda and I was NOT thrilled with that being the song they played.
Sure, Carly could sing it well, but there must be hundreds of better song choices for that "band," maybe even something where David could duet a little.

I sure hope they can still do a threesome, but with Jason wearing a shirt or tank.
Jason IS awfully cute, another heartthrob, but why not embrace that?
I do like Jason's mellow voice, but he won't and couldn't overshadow David's powerful rock voice or Archie's smooth/whatever his fans love so much.

yeah i would love to see that! im dissappointed that they're not letting them do it. and yeah, Barracuda probably isn't the best song for them to do, but it's a popular song kind of right? lol.

I don't know, but if all three of them performed topless it would certainly be interesting. If that was the threat, I can certainly see the head honchos freaking out
