I voted too!

TOP POLL
Here's how the rest of the people have voted so far.

Does David Cook need more personality?

Yes. He's missing something.

21.7%
No way! What is Nigel talking
about?! 78.3%
Looks like most people who read the article agree with us!

But who are the 21%? That's still one in five. Just who ARE these bizarre people. I say they're disgruntled Archie fans :-)
Or disgruntaled fans of any of the other contestants that didn't win. HOWEVER, to quote Mr. Cook himself, if you're either pleasing everyone, or pissing off everyone, you're doing something wrong!
Mom who loves David Cook
Don't get me wrong here, I LOVE Daughtry. But he does not have more charisma than David. I've seen him perform live with his band, I've seen him perform accoustic for our local radio station, I've seen countless interviews and behind the scenes footage with his band over the past two years. NO WAY he has more personality that David Cook, on stage, off stage, no where.

David has this thing that just draws you in...kind of like a politician....but better (its that acting talent he has). He's funnier, more well rounded, i think will be more successful in crossing over to different genre's.

Note to Mr. Cook: Just keep doin' wrong, you dull old thing!

No power in the 'Verse can stop David Cook.

I imagine that this is Nigel's version of 'charisma'. Cue Bucks Fizz, Eurovision Song 1981: wacko.gif

Men really, really don't get it do they? Simon C thought the word nerd confession would turn us off, instead it just made David even more attractive to us, especially with Hello following immediately after, Memo to the men of this world, women actually find highly intelligent men who aren't afraid to show it extremely sexy. Now Nigel wants more personality when he sings, excuse me, any more personality and mic fondling and the lot of us will expire - part of the reason we find David so god damm intoxicating is the personality he projects on stage, the CFM stare, the fondling, the half smile/smirk, believe me, any more 'personality' and the men in white coats will be coming to take me away. There's many reasons why David managed to seduce women of all ages, and the personality he projects on stage is a huge part of it.

Couldn't have said it better myself!

One more thing everyone, Nigel's opinion doesn't really matter, or count anymore. Although I do find it weird and in bad form for him to criticize his champ at all right now. Look at the great statement made by 19E/RCA when DC signed... I believe the phrases of praise went like this:

"David Cook is an extraordinarily versatile and talented artist with an impressive sense of musicality," said RCA Music Group executive Tom Corson. "He is a natural performer and a true star. We are thrilled to welcome him into our family."

That's what counts. 19E & RCA records know they have a gold mine in DC, and they know his performance skills are among the best.

Oh....ewwwww.....I personally don't think David should be compared to ANYONE (especially previous Idols!!). We've never had an Idol like him -and if we have - then, well, Chris Daughtry would have won his season! And he did not, therefore, there really hasn't been an Idol like David. David would have gotten a contract whether or not he won Idol, we all know that - this guy is just bashing for the hell of it. I'm a Daughtry, fan, sure, but you know something? Being a fan and comparing the music of Daughtry and say, David's last album - it's totally different, and shouldn't be even remotely labelled under the same genre. This guy is insane...

Nigel Lythgoe: "David Cook Needs a Personality"

If you thought Simon Cowell was blunt, how about this?

The Idol judge has nothing on his boss Nigel Lythgoe, who told OK! that this year’s winner David Cook could be as big as AI alum Daughtry – but only if he gets some personality.

The exec producer also revealed for the first time that the smash hit show had a run-in with the White House earlier this year over the President’s appearance on the Idol Gives Back special!

And he told us about hsi bizarre plans to turn America second biggest show, So You Think You Can Dance, into a tinned-food drive.

The Idol exec producer said yesterday that both of the finalists, Davids Cook and Archuleta, could have a shot at the big time -- except that they both suffer from a lack of onstage charisma.

Lythgoe said that he thinks 25-year-old Cook, who took the Idol title two weeks ago, could be “enormous for a long time” and even rival the success of fellow rocker Chris Daughtry, who came fourth in the show's fifth season.

“He can certainly sing – and I’d like to see a bit more personality when he’s singing,” he said.

“And that was the only thing that I think our finalists lacked a little bit this year, was more charisma.”

He said that the pair should use the American Idol Live tour this summer, which starts in Glendale Az. on July 1, to learn to put a unique sparkle into their performances.

Nigel, 58, also spilled that during the planning for the second annual Idol Gives Back fundraising special, which aired in April, America’s biggest TV show had a spat with no less a power than the White House!

He said that the show’s producers were so disappointed with President Bush’s efforts to combat the very poverty that the show was trying to relieve that they were embarrassed to have him on their TV show.

But Nigel said that Idol relented under pressure from the Pres's people, and allowed him to speak during the star-studded broadcast.

“The President is always saying ‘I want to be on [Gives Back],” said the Brit.

“We didn't ask the President this year to say anything because we are all a bit embarrassed about him, and the office insisted that, because the [primary] candidates were on it, the President would like to come on and say ‘thank you.’"

So far Nigel says, Idol Gives Back, has raised some $142million for projects in the US and Africa. But that hasn’t stopped him for developing some far more home-grown ways to help the poor.

The exec, who is also on the board of the after-school program LA’s Best, said that he is going to make the studio audience for So You Think You Can Dance donate canned goods for the program in exchange for an admission ticket.

"So if you want a ticket for So You Think You Can Dance, all you have to do is bring a can of fruit or vegetables or something.

"And I'll come and collect it each week and just take it away.

"And how sad is this? How sad is this in Los Angeles. I get angry with it,” he said.

So You Think You Can Dance airs on Fox on Wednesday and Thursdays at 8pm ET/PT.

Tickets for the Pop Tarts American Idol Live Summer Tour 2008, featuring the final 10 contestants from season 7 of American Idol, are on sale now.

OMG NO! God help us if he had any more charisma I couldn't stand it! I would have to quit my job and follow him around like a cookie junkie. I think I have already embarressed myself enough as it is.

No, the criticism came from AI producer Nigel Lythgoe. The praise came from 19E/RCA's Tom Corson, Exec VP & General Manager. Lythgoe is with Freemantle, the production company that produces Idol, not 19E! Just to clear up the confusion :-)

Not according to Wikipedia:

"After working his way through the television industry, Lythgoe held the post of Head of Entertainment and Comedy at London Weekend Television, where he commissioned and produced shows including Gladiators and Blind Date[1].
He moved from London Weekend Television to Bob Geldof's television company Planet 24 to executive produce the UK version of Survivor. Lythgoe then joined Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment group. He came to UK public attention when he was a judge and an executive producer for the ill-fated ITV1 show Popstars. During the show, Lythgoe earned the nickname "Nasty Nigel" for being tough on the competitors. Most significantly, the show led the way to a host of other singing contests such as the Pop Idol franchise, the template for American Idol.
Lythgoe is now president of 19 Television, where he has brought to the screen, in both Britain and America various "reality/talent" format of Idol; and is producer/judge of So You Think You Can Dance, on the FOX television network."

AH, this is actually a little clearer to me. They're all sister companies under the 19E/RCA umbrella. What you have is Nigel on the TV side contradicting the guy who runs the Music group. Well, that's sort of typical. I stand by my earlier post that Nigel is trying to get it out of peoples' heads that AI can't be topped now. And he may just have that opinion about DC... I join all of you in strongly disagreeing with it, but he may honestly feel that way. I guess there's no accounting for taste or people's perceptions.

Oh please. Nigel, change your meds. David has lots of personality; you should be thanking your lucky stars that you've got him! He's gonna make you millions. Go home and sleep for a while, Nigel! angry.gif

I totally agree with you. I've never met him, but I've heard lots of things about how he's a big stick in the mud. Simon Cowell and Simon Fuller are lovely though, I got to meet the two of them when I auditioned for Pop Idol back in 2001 wink.gif

I think that Nigel's comments had to have been Pre-Finale. Because David did have a metamorphis the last week's of the show. I was out of the country Mid-March and then when I finally got back to watching the show again, i was like OH MY GOD, who is this guy. He did get a new stage persona and I think that it showed on the air. David was performing and all the others were just singing. I think it is going to be evident on the tour that the other singers are not even in the same league as our DC.

Yes, I've heard nothing but very nice things about both Simons, especially Cowell. I think a lot of fans really like him... it's sort of a game for the studio audience to boo him. His apology to Cook was in keeping with his fairness and honesty. And I think, even though DC didn't feel disrespected, Cowell wanted to take the opportunity to clear the air and let everyone know that he really was in Cook's corner, and has been for many, many weeks. Those early run-ins over rules, smugness, etc ended when DC dialed it back a little and came out week after week and proved himself. From Billy Jean on Cowell was pretty supportive of DC. Sometimes a little critical, but always implying that DC raised the bar so high that he expects so much from him.

Scott, I think you've got it exactly right. He can't exactly come out and say, this is the best AI will ever be, can he? He's got to make it seem like there's a reason to watch future shows and future seasons. It's all PR crap.

Yep, David proved that he could take criticism well, and I think Simon recognized that. Watching DC's uncanny ability week-to-week to not only self-correct, but continue to evolve and realize his full potential was amazing.

David Cook has no personality? Yea and later monkeys might come flying out my ass.
David is fine the way he is.
He has enough personality to last for decades if you ask me.

I think that everyone should email OK magazine and tell them what a joke that Nigel is and also write Nigel at 19 Entertainment and do the same. Ask him if he saw the Finale or the aftermath of all the people for David Cook. I am not sure, but was there this craziness when Jordan Sparks won last year. NOT!!!
Also, go to www.okmagazine.com and take the poll, asking if David needs a personality. Currently the poll is 85% no way!!
Hopefully this is just a ploy by Nigel to get the ground to swell for David, because this guy has got to be on something.

That quick little glance at the audience, and sh*t as* smirk at the beginning of "Hero" on finale night .....

I don't think it's a good idea to send letters to 19E about Nigel. He made comments like this about Jordin and Blake last year after the finale was over. He's done this before and he will do it again. He has no stake in David's career folks! He is just saying this stuff to boost the ratings for next season and SYTYCD. I don't want to do anything that could hurt David by writing them an angry email or letter. I would strongly advise anyone that is thinking of doing that to think twice. I think we honestly need to let it go and let the sales of the single and the CD speak for themselves IMO. Writing those letters won't change what he said.

I thinking writing letters to 19E would backfire in our faces. Trust me, it would not help! I'm not participating in this. I would hate for any hate mail to somehow ruin David's promotion.

I agree. Winner by 12 million votes. "Sexiest Idol Ever" in the magazines. His NEW boss, the guy who runs the MUSIC division at RCA raves about his performance and singing skills. Smashed Billboard's charts. Dominated Itunes downloads. Pam08, you're right. It's what I put in two other posts this morning... Nigel does this crap and he can't go out and "ruin" future seasons by declaring season 7 & DC to be the best of the best. Let it go. What other entertainers - especially those who've only been known to the masses for less than 6 months - have fan sites like this? Our support speaks volumes. Bet you this doesn't bother DC one bit. As confident as he is, his humility and modesty probably has him thinking he's overrated anyway!

Yeah, it's tacky for him to bash anyone or anything about the show. But you know what, DC will probably get wind of this, and do what he always did when the 3 judges offered their constructive criticisms all season long: he'll say, "hmmm, thank you," think about it for a while, and then come out on stage with so much freakin' charisma and "chi" that he'll start a nuclear fusion!!! He ALWAYS rises to the occasion, and just when you think he can't get better, or that you can't love him more, he manages to kick it up a notch.

I agree, no need to send hate mail to Nigel, he isn't worth it. The best thing we can do is support David by attending his concerts and buying his music and future merchandise. David was above the criticism on idol, he will deal with this too. "David Cook is a remarkable talent and is a worthy winner of American Idol," says Simon Fuller, creator of the popular TV series and chief executive and founder of 19 Entertainment Label Group "he has an astonishing voice, and is capable of truly memorable performances as he showed throughout the season. He's mature, well grounded and knows what he wants. It's this quiet determination that sets him apart from other singers; I honestly believe that David has the potential to go on to become one of the most successful Idols of all time". -Simon Fuller

I hate to be the devil's advocate but on some level I agree with the article. I mean, think about it, David comes from a small town, had a typical upbringing (as far as we can see), went to college, played in a band, etc. He walked into American Idol with this mind set, typical guy. But for the music business outside of Blue Springs you need more. David just doesn't have enough experience with the big music industry and the press etc to have a personality designed to appeal to the masses. His personality appeals to the small town people. What David will learn is how to use that small town appeal and make it work for the big boys. (I'm sure you can think of actors/musicians who are small town but movie stars nonetheless).

In short, he just needs experience to build on his personality and make it appealing to mass culture. That's why Nigel said the tour will help, he just needs to build those skills.

Hopefully this is just a ploy by Nigel to get the ground to swell for David, because this guy has got to be on something.

In other words, he will learn to develop that "larger than life" rock star personna. I kind of see what you're saying "davidcookielove." It's not an insult. It's an observation. You know, he will probably pattern himself after one of his own idols, Jon BonJovi, who is the ultimate, charismatic "bring the house down" rock star who has never lost his charm and good manners. Bon Jovi is, and will always be, a sexy "class act," but his experience over the years has put that rock star facade on him. He proves it can be done without compromising integrity. I believe DC is just as capable of achieving that balance.

IF YOU HAVE FULLER, YOU'RE GOLDEN. HE'S THE BIG BILLIONARE BOSS MAN WHO RUNS THE WHOLE SHEBANG!

Yup he manages Carrie, Daughtry and Kelly

I respectfully disagree with just about every assumption you made in this post. 56 million votes did not come from only "small towns" and David was not in the Blue Springs Music Scene. Try Tulsa. Frankly this whole post has me wondering just who you were watching on that tv.

21% think that Davi Cook needs "something????? Ok lets see:
Great voice
Awesome musician
Drop Dead Gorgeous
Smart
Compassinate
Family Man
Emotional
Nice body
Going to be RICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly what do they think he's lacking???????

It has to be a bunch of DA fans....................poor losers(LOL) Us winners! rolleyes.gif

Nigel really caused a firestorm! DC can say for sure that NO ONE has a more fiercely loyal fan base. We're so protective! I think this is the start of a beautiful relationship. A two-way love fest between celeb and his fans.

Exactly Scott. I totally agree 110% with everything you just said wink.gif

i'm so tired of people bashing him on his apparent 'lack' of charisma.......the man exudes charisma in everything he does. just because he's not arrogant / pompous, which they didnt want him to be, or annoyingly shy and quirky...doesnt mean he doesnt have a personality. he's been showing all the sides of him since the beginning. david. DONT CHANGE FOR ANYONE>
bat-chen
I don't get it. How much more personality he need?! David have a great personality and he doesn't need to change for nobody ! He is who he is and we love it smile.gif

Gee... talking about lack of personality, try to look at yourself... Nigel!
dreamer
Does that guy even know the David we know?! If he had any clue who David was he wouldn't say that because he has a friggin sweet personality. just look at the thing he did on best week ever lol.
As if anyone even cares what that british fool has to say anyway lol

I too respectfully disagree. I am a born and Breed NYC girl, Can you get any more Big City then that. In no way does this give me stage presence. I love David as do most of my friends. I have heard this Small Town, Mid West, assertion before. David is from a City not a rural community. Blue Springs, is as I heard, 20 minutes away from Kansas City. He lived on his own in Tulsa. He is young but not a babe in the woods
He excudes personality. He embraces the camera. He needs some time to allow himself to be himself without every word and move being jumped on. I believe this is just Nigel's way of making himself part of the story

Agreed! Kansas City and the entire metro area (wich includes Blue Springs) is not a small town by any means. No, its not a BIG city like NYC, Chicago, LA, etc. but its not exactly a hole in the wall either.
