What do you guys think?

The "American Idol" formula will have a few tweaks and twists next week, when the show's top 24 compete.
That includes:
-- It will be a theme week. All of the contestants -- 12 men on Tuesday, 12 women on Wednesday -- will do 1960s songs.
-- Instruments will still be allowed. That began in the Hollywood round and will continue, producer Nigel Lythgoe said today.
The '60s theme is partly because of "some terrible song choices" last year, Lythgoe said. But it's also because it's tough to quickly get clearances for 24 modern songs.
That happened during the Hollywood rounds, he said, when three singers did the modern "Crazy." Approval wasn't available and none of them could be shown.
Lythgoe also said he'll continue the effort to tell personal stories. There will only be four mentors this season; none have been announced yet. And each results show will be an hour, to give more time to focus on the contestants and to look at ones from the past.
That history is important for a show with strong, 16-year-old contenders, he said. "They were 9 years old when the show started here, or 10. They've been watching the show for much of their little lives."

I don't get the "theme night", they don't have to change everything too show they've changes going on so... However, I'm excited to see the top24 performing live cuz these finalists are the one the best groups ever on the show(Season 5 were still the BEST for me)!!

There's alot of great rock music from the 60's, he'll be fine. Hendrix or Cream would be excellent choices.
What did they mean by "Crazy" approval?

some contestants sang "Crazy" but the song wasn't approved or available so they weren't allowed to show them on TV

Nigel was referring to the Gnarls Barkley song "Crazy." I don't care what the theme is really because I am sure David will find a song in which he is comfortable and the fact that he will be able to play his guitar is a plus too. It will showcase not only his voice but that he is a talented musican too. David has experience and I am sure he knows what songs suit his voice best. I worry for the contestants that aren't as experienced or don't have training on an instrument because I think having those 2 things behind them are nothing but an asset.

I was pretty anti the whole idea and theme itself because I'm sick of it, but Bprov has a point: we could get some really awesome rock music from David etc. I'm just awaiting the vast array or Stevie Wonder covers and my head is already hurting. As if we need yet another version of "Signed Sealed Delivered".
But themes for the semis are totally bad anyway.. this is when people get to show who they are as an artist and themes can totally restrict that.

I'm not really liking the whole theme thing. Yeah, it's ok once it gets to the top 12.. but that's what I love about the top 24. The contestants get to pick whatever song they want... in any and every genre. And now they're taking that away.. too many changes. I like the idea of instruments still being used though.
Oh and I don't like the result show being extended to one hour. I thought a half hour was bad enough.. and now we have to wait even longer to hear the results? Lame.

I know this message is a few weeks after the others were posted...but I'm just wondering if you guys changed your mind about the themed music.
Clearly David C. picked songs from each era and was awesome at them. He just needed to pick a good song and make it his own.
Saying the songs are part of one decade doesn't hurt the performers, it challenges them.
