American Idol 7 saw a great artist in David Cook who gave us many of most memorable covers and arrangements of other song originals (and covers). Mariah Carey said (or insisted
) that DC's version of "Always Be My Baby" should be included in his first post AI7 album. Lionel Richie liked his DC's "Hello" very much that there was a talk that DC would be recording this. Diane Warren was so elated when DC performed the song she wrote for Aerosmith, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." Even Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber praised DC for his "Music of the Night." Dolly Parton was surprised and liked the first male version of "Little Sparrow." Neil Diamond gave high praises to DC. and on and on. It seems that whatever David sings becomes instant hits.
Some are wondering will these DC covers end up in his first post AI7 album? Though, there's no news yet, it seems unlikely. As people love these DC renditions so much, most of DC fans have more or less downloaded (legally or illegally) these songs. Many would even like to have a DC album full of DC covers. While some said that there's no need to buy the album with the covers since they already have them. (see related discussion Will Any Of DC's Covers On Idol Be Released, Covers On Next Album http://www.david-cook.org/Will-Any-Of-DCand39s-Covers-On-Idol-Be-Released-t4940.html.)
As a David Cook, which would you rather want to happen?
A. Some DC covers from AI7 should be included in his first post AI7 album. Which songs?
B. DC should release an album full of covers done during AI7, after his first post AI7 album.
C. DC should not release a "covers" album at all.

I would say C. Most of us already have those studio recordings from AI that we downloaded from i-Tunes. Personally, I don't think David plans on doing that from what he said in interviews. I think it would be more likely to see him release something from AH or his unfinished solo CD. David already said this was not going to be an Idol album and I'm glad about that. I don't like the opinion of releasing an album full of AI covers in order to make just those fans happy. The goal to becoming successful after Idol is making sure you pick up fans who are outside of the fandom in order to sell records. Just the fans buying the records won't be enough. The goal is to move forwards, not backwards IMO.

I say A even though all of us have all eleven tarcks that he did from Idol, there is still so many more that I would love to have. And those include I still haven't found what I'm looking for, All I really need is you, Hello, The world I know, Dare you to move and Baba O'Riley.

I don't think he needs to put any covers on the album, but the idea of putting "Always Be My Baby" (or another one of the Idol "hits") on a movie/TV soundtrack isn't a half-bad idea.

He just needs to do, "Hello" that is the only one i think ppl want REALLY bad....i would personally if i was david cook put that one on my CD and make The Truth a single during the summer. thats what i would do. Of course though i would tweak The Truth to show that i have evolved in my style during the show
that's just my opinion of what he should do, but whatever he does i know will be amazing

I think that for his careers sake it is much more important that David keep the momentum with new stuff. Maybe one cover from Idol and I think ABMY is the one to go with. But we all know David can cover stuff and totally make it his own. That said, it's time for him to play HIS music. Idol is over =)

I don't want him to do a covers album it wouldn't be good for his career. He needs to have original songs to have a big career and be taken seriously in the music industry. I think it would be acceptable for him to have a bonus track with a complete version of "Hello", since he didn't do a full version on idol. The other ones mentioned for the most part were already on itunes and people purchased them, or downloaded from a share file. I think having him do a cover for a movie soundtrack or tv show would be more appropriate and acceptable. If mariah really wants him to put out her song, she has enough contacts in the business to get it in a film or something. She can always collaborate with him on a new song too.

David should make an album with his covers on AI...
I'm looking forward having one...

I wouldn't hold my breath. I don't think any Idol has ever gone back and done retreads. Especially this year when you could buy so many songs on iTunes

I don't think he will. As he said in the finale when he sang the last song, it's about moving forward.
Although, he could do covers of different songs than he hasn't done already. Maybe one or two (christmas album anyone?)

I would say C. No covers at all. None of the other successful idols have done covers on their albums, so it's not necessary, and I agree that the crazy fans like us already have all the songs he did on Idol anyway. I can burn my own covers album. It's a shame about some of them being too short. I would have really liked to hear a longer version of Baba O' Riley, but I guess we can't have everything.
I think he should do a covers CD for cancer research or some other charity after his first 2 cd's with new material have come out. He could do covers that the original artists and songwriters want him to do. It could also include other artists doing covers for charity as well. He would have established himself as an artist; and people would buy the cd just to hear him.
That said. I would buy a David Cook AI7 CD, DVD in a heartbeat to get better quality than what I have. I think AI is really missing out on revenue. They could release it with the tour promotion.

Although I personally would love a covers album from him...for most artists it becomes a setback in their careers. The new music momentum stops.
Of course, if anyone could pull it off, it would be DC!!!

Although I love the covers he has done, I am anxious to hear more of what he will do independently. Therefore, I would vote no covers...but i like the idea of ABMB in a movie soundtrack aka paula!

Absolutely not....
I think that would be a total mistake as far as his career goes.
He's on his way up.....fast....and I don't think covers would do him any good.
We want new stuff, things we haven't heard before. (Well maybe something from Analog Heart, but I think being two years later, he might tend to rework even those songs.
I think "Don't say a word" could be a huge hit right now. It has everything, the guitar riff in the beginning to get your attention, great lyrics, a catchy chorus, and just the right amount of "edgyness".....If I had to pick just one to put on his new album, that would be it.

I say no to a covers album, maybe use them as B sides for single releases or on a charity album but other than that leave them alone!
I would love to have a covers album, I even asked about it on another thread and was informed that it probably won't happen. But I would realle want to have a hard copy of the songs on CD even though I already have the videos of his performances. (I want to listen to the CD in the car lol)

The only cover that I would like on his CD is "Hello" the way he did it on AI7 a full version and the rest should be new songs in a Rock/Pop genre. I'd love a couple of ballad's too.

Thank you! I love it so much - actually I put in an order for a siggy and got this one back, it was a total surprise because I hadn't requested anything specific. It was just perfect!

Definitely C for no covers!
Although his AI stuff was great, DC is so much better than just putting a new twist on others' material.
Must be all original stuff for the new album...

I think a few covers (not from Idol) along the way, AFTER he is settled in his post-Idol career, is a good idea. But a COVERS album will turn him into Westlife (who seem to do nothing but covers even when they are doing originals).

Either choice C or a derivative of A, in that it would be one or two maximum covers on his album.

I vote NO COVERS,
sorry... I was saying NO TO COVERS, it would be a waiste of David's talents. We all have his songs from AI, that period is over. Maybe if he is asked to record Hello or ABMB for a movie soundtrack in the future after winning awards, but not now. He needs to focus and put his original material in the new album, he is so awesome, he needs to build on his integrity, credibility and talent.

I think that option B would be best.
I would love to hear some of David's original material first, before we jump into listening to a lot of covers done by him.
If he made both albums though, that would be totally amazing!
I have a feeling that both would go far too!
I hope it happens.

I think he should make a cover CD- and add it as a bonus when you buy his debut CD.
Or, perhaps release it digitally (or in stores for us diehards who like hard copies) and donate the proceeds to something like the American Cancer Society.
But a cover CD on its own for anything but charity or the fans who beg for it? Nah. He's David Cook, not Weird Al.

A/B; I think he should bring out a new album with new material, but also include the covers featured in AI7 as a bonus CD, Limited Addition. Unfortunitly being in the UK we've only been able to download David's single release 'A time of my Life' through iTunes. Would be great if he was to include the following, when the albums released. I think he would be surprised how many followers he has here in the UK too.
- Billy Jean
- Hungrey like a wolf
- Music of the night
- Baba O'Reily
- Day tripper
- Happy together
- Little sparrow
- Eleanor ribgy
- Innocent
- Always be my baby
- Hello
- I don't wanna miss a thing
- I'm alive
- Alright now

Nope......no covers at all, IMO. Time for him to do originals and, when you hear one on the radio, you will say..."that is a David Cook song". IMO, it is fine for him to do the covers on the show, but, once the show ends, it is time to move on. And, I agree with others here who have said that most people have downloaded the covers on the show already. Why rehash things?

Not only me, but im sure alot of fans here would prefer his own songs. Which means, no cover songs!! It's time for Cook to show his originality by having his own, or better, his self-composed songs! But on the other hand, I prefer Always Be My Baby to be in the list!

Personally, I will be shooting for a no here, because we've seen what he can do with other people's songs on AI, but now I think we're all itching to see what he can do on his own. I know I want to hear some of his own stuff that he's composed. That, my friends, is a true test of a musician.
