OK, so I love to travel and see new places around the world. I was curious where you guys have traveled to and what some of your top places to visit are and why. Even if it's just in your hometown, I'm curious what cool sights there are to see. Tell me what you think!

I pretty much love everyplace I've ever visited, but I do have some favorites. Here they are in no particular order...

1) Monhegan Island, Maine - so peaceful and tranquil. Could never survive the winters but summer is beautiful!

2) Urubamba Valley, Cusco, & Machu Pichu, Peru - this was my 2nd trip to South America and fell in love with the people and culture of Peru. Drank a lot of Pisco Sours!

3) Maui, Hawaii - just park me near Hana or on Hamoa Beach and I'm set.

4) Istanbul, Turkey - just got back from here and was fascinated with the blend of east and west.

5) Guatemala - the culture and handicrafts are amazing! Been there 3 times now.

New York City - needs no explanation

Asheville, NC / Blue Ridge Mtns. - beautiful! talk about nature at her finest...

I love California. Its beautiful. I love Santa Monica, Venice and was surprised that Laguna Beach wasn't over rated. Its gorgeous!

Seattle - I fell in love with this city when one of my best friends (and boyfriend for awhile) was living out there. Its an incredible city and while it was 3,000 miles from home - it still felt homey. smile.gif

Vancouver, BC - Just gorgeous. Waking up in the hotel room and seeing the mountains was just....amazing.

Denver, CO - Being a New England girl, I hadn't seen mountains until I'd seen the Rockies! Unbelievable. One of the things I did while I was there was go to Red Rocks - this amazing outdoor amphitheater - I've said that if the right person performs there, I'm absolutely going to get myself there. The acoustics are supposed to be incredible. Denver itself is a great city too -- I would like to go back - 3 days there wasn't enough!

Niagara Falls, Canada --- I had never been until 2 summers ago, and wow. I couldn't get over the power and beauty of the falls. Nor could I stop taking pictures of them. I hope to go back there soon.

Boston - If you're a history buff -- Boston's a great city - I love to get in there whenever I can! Between the history, the food, and the shopping - its just fun. smile.gif

BOSTON!! Mostly for Red Sox games but for visiting friends and shopping and eating and sightseeing. I used to live there though, so I've seen most of it!

Blue Ridge Mountains in western NC. One of the most romantic places I've ever been... that's all I'll say wink.gif

Outer Banks of NC - best during the off season

Blairstown, NJ - my bf's hometown, one of the only decent places in jersey wink.gif (he hates when I rag on his state)

Paris

New Orleans - my birthplace.... so many memories (some aren't there anymore sad.gif )
miss.gee
Ow...i never been anywhere outside this country! sad.gif but i recommend Bali to visit...it's beautiful, peace but awesome too..whenever i got enough money & time, i'd go there. I'm thinking to move out to Bali, Jakarta is too hectic to have a life. biggrin.gif

I love traveling so i'm liking this thread! biggrin.gif
Some of my favourites:

Amsterdam Not the seedy side next to the Central Station... but on the outskirts near the Rijkmuseum. Walking along canal's and drinking coffee in a chilled out, friendly atmosphere. Whats not to love! There are some fantastic art galleries too.

Paris Possibly my favourite city in the entire world! Yes it is the city of romance... but its so much more than that! It has amazing food (the steak!) amazing architecture, beautiful men and the best crepes i've ever tasted. Touristy areas can become quite crowded, but I could walk around this city forever and never become bored. It's also the best city to get lost in on a night, because no one bothers you.

London is fun! It has some great bars, fantastic shops and amazing art galleries. If you go you have to do a musical!....

Thailand I spent a month backpacking around this wonderful country. Rich in culture, It has some of the friendliest people in the world. Beautiful temples, beautiful beaches and the food is sooooo damn good! If you go I suggest a trip to Lampang in the North for an Elephant ride through the jungle.... bloody brilliant!

and the lastest place i've visited:
China By far the best holiday EVER!!! A country steeped in history and tradition with the best tourist attractions in the world. The Great Wall is something everyone should experience and it becomes extra special if you take the plunge and walk up via the steps!! The Forbidden City is a good place too, but get there early or the place will be packed. I think the reason I love this place so much is that i'm Euroasian and it really gave me a sense of my ancestry! for example, participating in a traditional tea ceremony in Shanghai! I just loved everything about this wonderful country.
Note, don't bother queuing because the locals will push infront of you!!

Places i'd like to visit:
Japan, Germany, America and New Zealand.

I've only ever been to places in my own province. But the places I have been are amazing:

Algonquin National Park, Ontario - Lots of trails and wildlife from moose, black bears, wolves, loons, and so much more.

Tobermory, Ontario - Another National Park. Lots of wildlife and amazing trails. The water up there is so clear and it's turquoise. Really neat for a lake.

Toronto, Ontario - So much to see. Theatres, sports, and TONS of shopping. There are underground malls!!! It's amazing!!!! You can't see it all in one day!!!

Places I'd love to visit - Finland, Germany, Egypt, England, Scotland, Japan, Australia!
albacookie
Well I'd like to see the whole world but so far my favourite places have been

Eygpt - standing in a building that is 5000 years old and still has original colour on the walls is the most surreal thing ever!

New Zealand - beautiful scenery, friendly people and loads to do - swimming with dolphins, whale watcing, any adventure sport you can think of was probably invented here.

NYC - what can you say!

Places I'd like to go - Cuba, Russia/Mongolia/China via the trans siberian express, Italy, Jordan and my number one, must see before I die destination is Antartica.
WordNerdATL
Definitely adding Boston to my list! I've been wanting to go for a long time but never made it.

Some of my other picks to go are some of the places you guys list too: Bali, Egypt, Thailand
Another place that I really want to go is South Africa.

Like I said in the "Get to Know You" thread, I haven't been many places, but I visited colonial Williamsburg, VA and the Outer Banks, NC in summer 2006 and I had a blast. Williamsburg was fun for me because I love history, and while I was in there, I also visited the other points in the "Historic Triangle" - Jamestown and Yorktown. smile.gif

I'd like to see Boston, Nashville, Savannah, New York City, Texas, Alaska, England, Ireland, Italy, and Australia, among others.

I've travelled a fair bit. Europe is nice but I prefer non-Western countries (my money goes a WHOLE lot further). Have travelled little in America.

As for my faves:

Edinburgh, Scotland will always hold a special place in my heart...lived there for the better part of six years and found the beginnings of my tribe there.

India -- pure chaos...or so it appears, puts you through the ringer and you come out better for it on the other side.

Australia -- if I could live anywhere this would be the place...the land is very strong here. Byron Bay another very special place.

Guatemala has been calling to me for a long time but I've yet to make it even after thinking I was going to TWICE. After I finish my mission here in America hopefully that's where I'll be heading.

For the city, or "urban" vacation:
London
New York
San Francisco

For the relaxed vacatoin:
Outer Banks, NC (northern part, Dare & Curatuck counties)
Palm Springs

I'm still waiting to take an adventurous trip. Dying to go to Barcelona. Could use a week in Hawaii. Always seem to end up in Las Vegas - it's cheap (not counting a run of bad luck), and close.

When you make it to Barcelona you must check out Gaudi's architecture. Phewww!!! Amazing! I only spent, like, 24 hours there but I fell in love with the city immediately and can't wait to get back.
Sandra
Australia really hope to move there too

Earthfairy, definitely worth a trip to Guatemala - even though I haven't strayed too far from the Guatemala City, Lake Atitlan, Chichicastenango, Antigua circuit, the parts that I've seen are stunning! India is on my list of places I want to go to as well.

Scott's suggestion, Palm Springs, has been on my list for awhile too (but need at least a 3 day weekend coming from the east coast). I love the mid-century mod architecture in Palm Springs. One day I want to live in a modern ranch house - there are so few in Atlanta where I live. Most of the homes here are traditional-style.

I really want to do that one too....

I've from the East Coast so I enjoy taking trips to amusement parks like Kings Dominion, Hersher Park and Busch Gardens. I do like to fly so I haven't been too far away and never out of the country, but I have been to Florida twice when I was in my teens.
YankeeCookie
My favorite places:
Venice, Italy-I am so sad that this city is sinking. Probably the coolest city I've ever visited.
New York City, NY-what can I say about NYC. I go once or twice a year and always find a new place to visit.
London, England-just an amazing city. I spent a month there while I was in college and if I ever moved overseas, this would probably be the place.

I'm going to Greece this October, just put my final payment down. I'd also like to visit Africa, the Galapagos Islands. As for US, I realized the other day I've never been to Chicago or Las Vegas, so those two have been added to my list.
