First off, great news! David has been played on Z100. From what I hear, this is *major*. I really hope that more 40 stations follow suit and the song gains traction in airplay.
Second of all, I really enjoyed TOML last night. David was rocking it and he got the crowd enthused. However, if you saw "My Hero" on the NBC website, they were not into it, and this really, really bothered me. If David wants to build a following, he has to get the crowds excited, and that wasn't happening here. I don't really know what else he could have done, though. Other people say that they saw the Usher performance on the website and the crowds were pretty dead there, too, and Usher has been an established performer for years. Is this par for the course? Will this hurt Cookie? (Like I said, the actual TV appearance had a fairly enthusiastic crowd).
Third - and I hesitate to include this - according to LJ, apparently Archie has sent out an all-points bulletin on his MySpace that Cookie has more friends than him. I don't know who is behind this but it is not cool. It brings up the paranoia in me big time that 19 really wanted Archie, they will bury Cook no matter what, the MySpace discrepancies are this big CONSPIRACY, etc, and I have to talk myself off the ledge.
I have to be realistic that Archie will attract more of a MySpace following than Cook, anyway. Cook has a diverse and larger following, and many of them are people who would not be caught dead on MySpace. I also think MySpace may not be palatable to Cook's non-American fans, although maybe I am wrong about that. Cook is being interviewed in multiple magazines about his music and his philanthropy, and his real plans for his career are being discussed. I suspect that there is already a David Cook band in the works because I saw the initials DC on the drum set. And then there's the ESPN thing. There is absolutely no way Archie could have done the sports talk.
So they have Cook involved in all of these different things and most of them go way beyond the fanwars and are designed to appeal to a broader base than the HSM crowd, but I just don't know what to think with Archie participating in the fanwars. Shouldn't he be concentrating on the music? Why do I even care who has more MySpace friends? I hate MySpace.
ETA: I was just added as David's friend on MySpace after a week's lapse. The key behind all of this is probably to spice up the fanwars, then. I am going to have such a hard time explaining to my friends why American Idol is on my rarely-updated page.
