Full Version: Thoughts On Various Happening In Cookieland
David Cook > David Cook > All About David Cook

First off, great news! David has been played on Z100. From what I hear, this is *major*. I really hope that more 40 stations follow suit and the song gains traction in airplay.

Second of all, I really enjoyed TOML last night. David was rocking it and he got the crowd enthused. However, if you saw "My Hero" on the NBC website, they were not into it, and this really, really bothered me. If David wants to build a following, he has to get the crowds excited, and that wasn't happening here. I don't really know what else he could have done, though. Other people say that they saw the Usher performance on the website and the crowds were pretty dead there, too, and Usher has been an established performer for years. Is this par for the course? Will this hurt Cookie? (Like I said, the actual TV appearance had a fairly enthusiastic crowd).

Third - and I hesitate to include this - according to LJ, apparently Archie has sent out an all-points bulletin on his MySpace that Cookie has more friends than him. I don't know who is behind this but it is not cool. It brings up the paranoia in me big time that 19 really wanted Archie, they will bury Cook no matter what, the MySpace discrepancies are this big CONSPIRACY, etc, and I have to talk myself off the ledge.

I have to be realistic that Archie will attract more of a MySpace following than Cook, anyway. Cook has a diverse and larger following, and many of them are people who would not be caught dead on MySpace. I also think MySpace may not be palatable to Cook's non-American fans, although maybe I am wrong about that. Cook is being interviewed in multiple magazines about his music and his philanthropy, and his real plans for his career are being discussed. I suspect that there is already a David Cook band in the works because I saw the initials DC on the drum set. And then there's the ESPN thing. There is absolutely no way Archie could have done the sports talk.

So they have Cook involved in all of these different things and most of them go way beyond the fanwars and are designed to appeal to a broader base than the HSM crowd, but I just don't know what to think with Archie participating in the fanwars. Shouldn't he be concentrating on the music? Why do I even care who has more MySpace friends? I hate MySpace.

ETA: I was just added as David's friend on MySpace after a week's lapse. The key behind all of this is probably to spice up the fanwars, then. I am going to have such a hard time explaining to my friends why American Idol is on my rarely-updated page.

I do not believe that this is true. I am a friend to both and have not received any such bulletin.
Thank you.

David was awesome last night.

One thing I did notice was that the girls seemed to be more into TOML. Not a surprise. Its another one of AI's sappy winning songs. Even if David rocks it up, its still going to appeal to the female audience more than the guys. The guys seemed to be more into Hero. I saw some head bobbing going on with some of the guys. Its a heavier song and I think that the Foo Fighters in general are more appealing to the guys rather than teen girls.

Lets face it, the two songs are geared towards two different types of audience.

If the powers that be are smart, they will continue to expose David's talent like this to draw the attention of the non-AI audience.

19 got a piece of both Davids in their partnerships, Cook with RCA and Archie with Vibe. There should be no complaints there.

And a quick comment on the Archie My-Space thing. I wouldn't worry about it. Archie is a kid, what you're seeing is typical high school stuff. I think DC and his real fans (like us) are too smart to get wrapped up in that stuff. Besides, I wouldn't be surprised if daddy didn't have something to do with it. He has the alleged history of doing things like this, even if the David's did defend him.

Oh, it's true. I got the bulletin from Archie this morning... or at least someone using Archie's official MySpace. I'm not going to sweat about it. And yeah, it does smack a whole lot of Jeff Archuleta's handiwork.

In the end, it's not the number of MySpace friends you have, it's the number of downloads/CDs you sell, and so far, Cookie is doing juuuust fine.

ETA: Looks like the bulletin has been taken down. Wonder if 19 was behind it, taking it down, I mean? That's okay, because that was incredibly tacky of whoever posted it in the first place (I refuse to believe that Archie himself posted it), given how supportive Cookie has been to Archie.

*ahem* I really loved it. LOL.

but I see what you're saying. TOML is sorta *eh* for me though.

I'm confused - what is "My Hero" on the website? Could you post a link?

What got me about the whole thing was how un-Archie it seemed. The bulletin supposedly referred to Archie's Army of Golden ArchAngels or some other such nonsense, and when has Archie *ever* talked like that? The whole thing reeks of Dadcheluta even more than it does 19's manipulation. And if it's been taken down, I'm thinking that it wasn't ever a 19 creation in the first place.

I think the my space friends this has to do with this. I read somewhere that these recording companies can tell who is gonna buy albums based on how many my space friends artists has. the number that they are talking about is 100,000 friends. Well, DC doesn't even have that yet, but at least he is moving upward, but Archie has even less. so I bet he is just trying to increase his numbers because of that. Unfortunately, his age group demographic isn't allowed on the computer without their parents supervision. And if they are like adults in my family, they won't let the little girls even get near archie, because Mom's are stealing the computer to look up DC stuff. So, i think that is it, in a nutshell.
Meg
One of the most beautiful things about this AI season to me was DC and ARchie's friendship, brotherly relationship. I bet you anything that ARchie himself had NOTHING to do with that bulletin. I wonder if a hacker could even do it.

19 couldn't have dreamed up and manufactured all the warm fuzzies that the brotherly relationship brings out if they tried. It reflects positively on both DC and ARchie. They couldn't buy better PR.

I sure hope they took it down whoever put it there.

While MySpace is a good promotional tool, by no means is it an accurate measure of how many records someone will sell. There are plenty of people who will buy Cookie's (and Archie's) albums who would never dream of "friending" them on MySpace. In the grand scheme of things, the record company cares a lot more about radio play and units sold, and we know who has the edge *there*.

Based on the amount of vapid Internet activity the Archies are responsible for, I do not think they have much of a problem getting online. MySpace is primarily a youth-oriented medium, and while Cook has a lot of young fans (hi, Abby!) he also gets a lot of attention from people who are both too old for fan wars and live in other countries.

What I meant by the ESPN thing was David's interview in the ESPN magazine and right before the anthem, which is exactly the kind of stuff that's meant to appeal to a male audience. It's a marketing strategy that's intended to move beyond hits on MySpace.

The competition is over. rolleyes.gif

Cook was a very humble winner and you could not have asked for a more gracious and supportive runner up than Archie.

Even if Archie or his PR people or his Dad or whoever did post something like that ...so what? They are just trying to motivate his fans and if they want to use Cook's name and success to do it, I say let them. I don't think DC would mind and neither do I. In fact, more power to them.

I am a 1000s of votes per Tuesday die hard Cook fan, but I wish Archie all the success possible. If I wasn't already a friend of Archie's, I would go add him now.

ETA: z100 is HUGE. Been waiting to see if that would happen. I wish they would interview him and promote him to their massive audience. This is something other idols have gotten that David hasn't yet. Thanks for the update!

He did the Foo's as well as The Skittle Song. They only broadcast Skittles but you can see the other and a really good interview here:

Cooked by Cook
If the wars are deliberate planned by promoters and what not, they won't last. True fans stick around, the fickle ones move on. Whether its Archie or Cookie. That just how it goes. Younger fans are louder they scream, and show up with all sorts of posters, more mature fans, buy quality material, and stick around a lot longer ( and should also show up!!!). I keep telling you that the audiences for this late night shows, are kinda lame, but ladies, if we want enthusiastic fans lets start showing up...they post all his appearances far enough in advance. Let's focus on how wonderful he looked and sounded last night. Have you seen the pictures...Yowza.....

The bulletin is down... I checked it this afternoon.

What gets me is that it was even there in the first place. I don't believe for a minute that 19 had anything to do with it. Why try and promote one popular artist at the expense of another who is proving to be even more so?

Now, I'm all up for a little friendly competition, but the reference to the ArchAngels and the general tenor of the bulletin was very un-Archie like.

The whole thing just smacked of Daddy Archuleta to me.

Hey guys!

I get a lot of questions asking if this is really my personal MySpace page. I want to let you know that it DEFINITELY is. The people at 19 help me maintain it, but I read your comments and try to read some of the emails. I'm pretty busy right now and wish I could read every one, but it's impossible with everything going on for tour rehearsals, making a new album and everything else. I'm sorry I can't get back to you all individually.

Speaking of comments - we can't have HTML in the comments, and they told me people that abuse the comments by taking up a lot of space or spamming stuff will be blocked. So let's not do that! I want all of you to comment though...and get my friends numbers up too. Cook has over 60,000 friends!! He deserves it for sure. But we can match him I bet.

Thanks again everybody! Talk to you soon. The video of your questions should go up next week!

Here is the bulletin. As I said above - so what? He does not sound disrespectful to Cook or like he is trying to start anything. He has been so supportive and gracious to Cook, ALWAYS. And, he is a kid, and a very sweet one by all accounts, who is just trying to find his way.

Also, remember that Cook sent out a bulletin asking his fans to go add Archie. These guys support each other and I am sure they would both like it if the fans could let the competitiveness and jealousy end. They can both be successful and there is no need to compare them any longer. smile.gif
WordNerdATL
Hmmm...doesn't sound outright disrespectful except why even bother to mention the number of friends DC has on MySpace? Couldn't he have just asked everyone to get the word out w/o mentioning David? Things like this just make me want want to laugh. So if he's lucky he *might* end up with more friends on MySpace than DC and somehow that is relevant to his success?!?

That's not the one. There was one that went out this morning (but has since been deleted), that calls on the the ArchAngels and GoldenArches to get their friends to add Archie as a friend and beat Cookie to 100,000 MySpace friends. The tone was way more competitive than the one you posted above. The one you posted, I have no problem with.

I'm all for both Davids having mad success, and I will not put down one to boost the other. It's just too bad that a lot of the ArchAngels and Mom and Pop Archuleta don't feel the same way.

Well, if the goal was competition, it certainly worked. David Cook's My Space has passed the 2.5 mil mark and added 12,000 friends since this morning. I am deeply ashamed that I am aware of these facts.

And the second bulletin is totally Archie: the first ---> not so much.

At any rate, what does it mean? Nothing. It doesn't mean all these people will buy records in six months. Even if they did, both of them would have to sell more to remain respectable. The important thing to me is that the label info was corrected. That was getting really annoying.

Now don't take this the wrong way, but why did you feel the to post such a thread? The completion, as others have stated in their posts here, is over. For the record, Archie's MS is ran by his record label Jive. I have a hard time believing he posted such a bulletin and if he did post a bulletin, I don't think it was meant as mean spirited. Cookie posted a very similar bulletin, or I suppose the label may have, last week on his page. Honestly, the paranoia about Archie needs to stop IMO. I'm thinking possibly Jeff may be involved if there is any "weird" stuff going on but honestly, this is no big deal.

Now THAT right there is the important stuff. I am glad I am not the only detail oriented perfectionist who was irritated by that. When he was searched on the MySpace music pages he did not sort as an artist with a major label record contract. I was compulsively checking that little detail every time I looked at something on his page. LOL

I must not have seen that one before it was deleted. Still, why be upset about it? David Cook won American Idol by a comfortable margin. Yet even in his winning moment he wanted (insisted even) on sharing the spotlight with the other idols, especially Archie. Let's make David proud by being as gracious as he is. If Archie or his PR people want to stoke the competitive flames to rally the Archie fans - I hope it works for them. I wish Archie success.

LOL. Here is the other reason to be gracious, if the above didn't work for you. Archie has much more of an uphill battle than Cook does, for many reasons. Have a little heart for him, he's just trying to make it too. wink.gif

Yes, much success to Archie, indeed! I know that Cookie wishes him that, and that Archie wishes the same for Cookie.

Have you noticed that each has the other as their #1 Top Friend? That's so cute!
