I would get there at like 12:00 just to be safe. But like the previous poster said there is no gurantee they will come out and if they do they might wave and be in a hurry. Totally depends.
Yeah, that's what has happened from my past experiences. Sometimes they just rush by and wave. Occasionally (though I doubt David would be one of these types), they'll completely ignore the fans, while walking past them, and even stopping near them. (I'm still slightly bitter from a past experience, if you can't tell)

Really? What do you think about 2?
I'm getting there at 2 and I know there's no guaruntee, but I'm going to the very first show.
I'm really wondering about that.
So, I'm calling the arena the day before to find out as much info as I can.
I would suggest that to everyone. Call your arena to find out! They're bound to say SOMETHING usefull.

Arenas won't be able to tell you much, I don't think. They definitely couldn't tell you the odds of the Idols meeting fans. The best thing to do is just to come early, figure out (by sight) where the buses will be parking, and the best place to stand to get you noticed.
According to my photos from last year (at the San Diego concert) the Idols began meeting fans at 12:30, so 12 is a pretty good time to arrive.
Also, if the buses go into a tunnel/underground, they're much less likely to go meet the fans (at least beforehand; I've no idea what the habits of meeting afterward are.)
I wonder, in the past, have many Idols come out before the first few shows? I know they come out after most shows, but I just don't know if they're into the swing of it at the beginning. Has anyone here been to one of the first shows in the past?
