As he prepares to kick-off the American Idols Live! Tour 2008 on July 1 in Glendale, Arizona, AI winner David Cook chats with MySpace about everything from competing with pal David “Archie” Archuleta to stealing Sinatra’s coolness!


What exactly was going through your mind right before your name was read on American Idol?
That I hoped the silver medal would look good on me. I thought Archie had it in the bag. In that moment you can’t really think. Your mind goes between “it’s not me” and “oh my God, what if it is me?” I just didn’t want to make an ass out of myself, and to remember to be gracious. And to thank Archie either way.


If you could choose anyone in the world to collaborate with on your upcoming album (due this fall), who would you pick?
I would have loved to work with someone like Sinatra, just in case I could steal some of his coolness. But I’m excited to work with hopefully many people that inspire and drive me to be a better musician. This truly is the time of my life and I’m going to run with it!


What are you looking forward to most as the new American Idol winner?
For me, the chance to pull out all the stops on a record is paramount. That trumps everything else for me. Doing a record, working with the top producers/writers in the industry, recording at the best studios--this is really what gets me going. I’m excited to put out a great record that reflects the real me. Oh, and the tour is going to be rockin’!


If you had to be stuck in an elevator with Paula, Simon or Randy, who would you choose?
Simon. I think it’d be hilarious to watch him squirm for a change. And you know it would be a great conversation--he definitely has an opinion about everything.

Nice little interview! I guess studying Sinatra really made an impression. I loved the inspiration he drew from how Sinatra approached a song, as David described it in the Idolotry (EW) video interviews.

I'm glad he's so grounded. Even though I keep coming here looking for news each day, the important thing is the music he will be able to record now, not the celebrity or interviews.
Go make some great music, David. We are so eager to hear it.
