Topic: Simon Cowell often gets it wrong....

Here is why I say this.....

Simon Cowell is not a musician, he is a business man and doesn't have an ear for American Music. Randy and Paula are and often get it right more times than Simon ever did.

Look back at your tapes, the proof is there.

Let's start with Kelly Clarkson

You can clearly hear him at Hollywood rounds that he did not like her. Paula and Randy did...they put her through. Simon wanted Tymra....ok, where is she now?

Clay and Ruben. Everyone felt Clay Aiken should have won.....but Ruben won because Simon liked him. Clay was more successful than Ruben selling more records. Ruben gets dropped by label.

Fantasia versus Jennifer Hudson. Simon wanted Fantasia, but Hudson became more successful winning every award out there including the Oscar. Fantasia's record sales have been moderate.

Daughtrey should have won American Idol. Simon thought this too, however, early on he said NO to Daughtrey at his audition. Daughtrey has become more a success than Taylor Hicks (who won on the popular vote) and tours with Bon Jovi. He was also nominated for 4 Grammy awards.

The same with David Cook. Simon said NO at Hollywood rounds, and Paula and Randy said YES. David Cook is the most talented male performer to grace American Idol's stage in seven years with such an incredible tone and vocal range. He will be the most commercially successful out of all the idols this year. I have never been wrong yet in my predictions in all seven seasons. He is beginning to receive National Attention and receives the most media coverage of all the current idols. My opinion, if Archuleta wins, it will be only on the Popularity vote of the 10 - 14 year old girls.

The only one Simon got right was Carrie, but that is only because she was pretty and Country music was a very hot market when she won. Simon was following marketing trends. She is technically a good singer, but she doesn't touch people like Kelly. Kelly is also currently more a national success than Carrie.

So, maybe we should thank god for Paula and Randy because they seem to know BEST.

So David don't feel bad if you don't win....even though we all know you should. Love you

Good post!

I think Simon is hilarious and I appreciate his honesty. And I even agree with him on quite a few things (Carly's wardrobe, for example.) But sometimes he seems severely out-of-touch with the record-buying audience. I think that there are a lot of musical styles that Simon doesn't "get", and he thinks that if he doesn't like it, no one else will either. I think he misses the mark a lot of the time.

Randy is definitely my favorite judge; he seems like the true musician out of the three, and he is always the most objective.

I agree with your post but take exception with the above paragraph. Simon got it right with Carrie, period. Carrie is a one woman national phenomenon currently selling out arenas co-headlining with Keith Urban. She is the biggest name in country music right now, and she is a cross over sensation. I would argue that Carrie is the one reaching more people right now with her music.

David Cook will have national success in the same way Daughtry has, which is darn good!

I haven't watched much AI before this season so I don't remember his comments from there, but this season.. I must say that usually I agree with him. biggrin.gif Really. NOT always, but quite a lot. Me and my stepmother sometimes laugh bacause Simon always says the things just like he thinks and it can sometimes (well.. usually) sound a bit rude, and we think like ''omg how can he say like that haha : D But let me think.. He is absolutely right''

I am talking mainly about the beginning stages of the audition. If you rewind your tapes of prior seasons, it is loud and clear that he said no to Daughtrey, almost Clarkson and Cook. He wasn't crazy about Hudson either. I am not talking about the comments he is making on the show. That is after the fact. Without Paula and Randy Jackson, Cook, Daughtrey, and Clarkson would not have made it on the American Idol stage.

And as for Carrie, you need to understand what I am saying about marketing trends. Her timing on Idol when Country was hot is what helped her at the right time and with Simon's pimping. Some people in the music business still can not warm up to Carrie although she is technically a good singer. I just read on article on it. No one is saying she is not selling out arenas, but Simon's guidance to making that call was the country charts and trends at that time, not to mention Carries image. It's not like Simon has such an incredible instinct.

The funny thing is that Simon is the only judge who has ever had something negative to say about any of David's performances! I think that's proof enough that he's not quite as savvy as he thinks he is!

I agree w/ y'all, Simon is hilarious! but he's not a musician like Randy, and he's waaaaaay off most of the time...but hey we love him anyway smile.gif

Well, here is my top ten list of things we all love to hate about Simon:

10. He does not have any background or relevant experience in the music industry, and his opinions are based on what he likes and who he likes PHYSICALLY rather than if the person has ACTUAL talent (Chris Daughtry and David Cook being perfect examples, as they are super talented and EVERYONE knows that!)

9. He says most things for shock value ("You sound like Dolly Parton on helium"- to KLC) and just to get reactions out of people.

8. He is harder on the contestants WITH talent... (and I think that is because he expects more from them)

7. He favorite phrases (at least this season) are: "If you ask me that sounded very Karaoke" OR "That sounded like you are should be performing it on a cruise ship"

6. He enjoys playing the part of the "bad" judge and plays it up for the cameras.

5. He promotes people like Kellie Pickler and KLC and puts them into the top twelve and once they are up on the big stage and aren't really that good after all, he just can't seem to figure out why they are there and why people keep voting for them.

4. His bickering "act" with Paula is getting to be annoying.

3. His bickering "act" with Ryan is getting to be VERY annoying.

2. Whether he wants to admit it or not, he has a final say in who wins American Idol.

and finally..

1. When it comes down to it, he will want the contestant that is the most popular to win, even if they are not the most talented since he just wants to make money off of them. (We all know the show is about making money) This is why it could be possible for little david to beat BIG DAVID this season. But I sure hope that is not the case... we'll just have to see and keep on voting on butts off for BIG DAVID.. wink.gif

P.S.

This is just my thoughts and opinions on the subject... and one other random thought I just had..

Do you guys think he is sorry he promoted Taylor Hicks?? - Sure he was entertaining, but he cannot sing and his label just dropped him and he is currently touring in the Philippines to make money.. all I can say to that is WOW...

Actually, Simon did not promote Taylor Hicks. He gave him a no at the very first audition. And then pretty much bashed him the whole year. Only at the finale when it looked like Taylor was going to win by a landslide which he did, did Simon say something like "with that performance you have just won American Idol" and Paula and Randy made sure everyone knew that Simon had voted against Taylor to begin with. Whether he is doing well now or not I just wanted to clear up that statement. Simon hated Taylor Hicks.

Is that why Taylor Hicks is missing from opening credits (or if he's on them he's on for a millisecond!) - I though it was strange all the idol winners were there except him
