We've had threads dedicated to almost every single part of the man's body that is humanly possible, but not as many to the one asset that first drew us all in -- David's singing.
Now, I want everyone to close their eyes and listen to his songs, and tell me your favorite vocal phrasings... NOT the favorite song or performance, no CFM looks that made you go THUD, no incredible re-arrangements. Just the little notes and phrases here and there that really wowed you and made you think, this dude can sing. Is it a favorite big note that he hit on a particular song? Or a specific transition? Or maybe a particular falsetto or growl...? And since this is audio only, please be specific if you're talking about the performance version or studio version if applicable (or AH or any concert performance if appropriate). No limit ('cos it's hard to pick just one

)
OK I'll start --
1) I'm a sucker for the big notes. Two of the best -- on The Truth, at the end "any other waaaaaaaaa-aaaaa-aaaaa-aayyyyy!' and on the studio version of Billie Jean again at the end "not my soooooooooooooooooooon!"
2) On the performance version of Music of the Night -- he sings "where you want to be.." then sort of pulls away the microphone so that the last note echos and dies out quickly, that was cool.
3) On the studio version of Music of the Night -- the way he holds that last "niiiiiight" but not loud and big, just long and pure...
4) On Hello, the transition from "let me start by saying...." then belting out "I LOVE YOU!!!!'
Your turn....

The list is just way to long... but this afternoon at work I was listening to a playlist of DC's AI performances, and still today the slow crescendo of The First Time just gives me shivers up my spine and goose bumps. It also made me cry the first time I saw the performance.

My list might be a little long...haha
1) Have to agree with the performance version of music of the night. When he hits the "be" note. Chills.
2) This one is kind of silly. But on the performance version of day tripper, I love when he says a little "yeah", after the "I found out" line.
3) During the first time ever I saw your face, when he says "rose in your eyes. and the moon and stars..."
4) First few lines of Still Haven't Found. Especially "highest mountains"
5) The World I know performance on Ellen. When he says "while the tears roll down". Also the last note of that song.
6) His cover of creep when he says "your just like an angel."
7) Studio version of innocent when he sings "every calories a war". Also, I'm quite partial to the first few seconds of the performance version of innocent.

8) The very ending of the studio version of Don't wanna miss a thing, starting with "The Sweetest Dream will never do..."
9) Harmonizing on the Hero duet with Archie.
10) Walmart version of time of my life when he sings "as close as the beat of my heart". Love the crescendo.
11) In Fall Back into me when he says "fist clenched swingin"
12) The truth, "cause you don't want me anymore, I hit the ground"
13) Makeover, "no surprise, no need to pretend that no one really cares", and "are you prepared for what you'll find"
There's so many more, but I think that's enough for right now.

His long notes in Axium cannot be beat. Callout, Incarcerate, On the Floor, Clean Break. If I were forced to choose an AI moment, I would have to go with FTEISYF for first then Billy Jean for second.

I'm going to start with the moment he got me hooked: Hello. "i love youuuuu--uuuuu"
billie jean live: ...she said IIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii (wow!)
first time ever i saw your face: the whole rise into the final "your face"
the world i know: "...while the tears roolled down............"
still haven't found what i'm looking for: most of it.
day tripper studio: the "she's a big teaaaser oh-oh..."
music of the night: "...where you long to beeeeeee...."
clean break album version: "let you goooooooo-ooooohhhh-ohhhh"
...i can go on forever!

I'm gunna stick to AI performances and studio versions of them... There might be kind of a lot hahah....

1. All I Really Need, "To say, what you wanna say-ee"
2. Eleanor Rigby (studio), "Father McKinsey(sp?)" the way he says it all harsh and... David-y lol. Actually, scratch that, the whole song in general is amazing lol
3. Of course the classic notes in Hello, but especially "Or is there someone loving you?"
4. Still Haven't Found - the entire first verse and then "And it buuuurrrned like a fire.. This burning desire" and then "It was waaarrrm in the niiiight. I was cold as a stone." Lol... that's got to be my favorite performance of Davids lol.
5. All of Music of the Night lol... Especially his last note, and the "be" line.
6. The "calorie's a war" line in the studio version of Innocent.
7. Hungry Like the Wolf, studio version - when the bridge hits and he actually says, not sings "hungry like the wolf."
8. I reeeallly enjoyed I'm Alive especially "The sun to keep you warm.... yeah it's allriiiiiiiggght!" lol
9. Little Sparrow - "I am not... a little sparrow." "Oh the sorrow never ends.."
10. ABMB - The second verse, especially the "but inevitablyyyyeeee, you'll be back again." line lol...
And I'll just mention that I really like the Don't Wanna Miss a Thing arrangement, and I liked the quick solo thing in All Right Now lol.

OMG there are sooo many. But I know what you mean, there are little pieces of songs that make me go "ahhhh..."
Like:
1. The Truth - "I hit the ground"
2. Stitches - love how he sings "found what I always WANted..." also like how he sings "aground"
3. Makeover - love how he sings "are you" (as in are you looking for something more). Oh and "she swore she knew a friend"
4. Fall Back Into Me - "or at least I can pretend, that we didn't lose it all again", also "fist clenched swinging". But the best line of the song? "congratulations, you left me a little jaded and rejected..."
5. Silver - "an open sky of redemption, the kind you always burn from"
6. Better Never Than Late (Optimistic to a Fault) - the WHOLE song, but if I had to pick..."This is the moment where I tell you that I'm falling apart" and "And I would give anything if you would only pick up the phone..."
7. My Hero (Leno performance) - Every bit is sexy, but my favorite is this: "Use that evidence, race it around" (love how he pronounces the d in evidence so forcefully!). Oh and in the beginning - "let's go, come on!"
8. Innocent - studio version - second verse, and also "one day, you'll have to let it go, you'll have to let it goooo...nooo..."
and so on and so on!

Ooohhh, this is gonna be fun
1. Hello - the live perfomance where he just shouts out to my hormones - I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!
2. Little Sparrow - the studio performance, acapella part - all yea madens fair and tender, never trust a handsome man etc., omg, it gets me every single time

.
3. Hungry Like a Wolf - the studio version where he says hungry like a wolf, omg the whole song just gets me in my neather regions.
4. Billie Jean - the last chorus where he just looses control and totally blurts it out.
5. Music of the Night - there at the end, where he just keeps going, of the niggghhhhht, of the nigggghhhht (this must sound stupid).
6. Day Tripper- She's a big teazer, omg, I'm at a lost for word ....
I might just stop now and confess that I love every single note he sings, every breath he takes, every sound he makes, everything he does is just magic

To try and put it down to certain songs is so hard.
I love the belting on Always Be My Baby and also the grit in his voice on Porcelain off of Analog Heart.
I can't get anymore specific than that. I am trying to maintain my sanity.

I love how he sings "you" and once you start to notice, you realise he sang it an awful lot.
Of course, the "or is someone loving you" bit of Hello
Dare you to move - "lift yourself, lift yourself up off the floor"
The Music of the Night where he says "Touch me, trust me" ......ummm........yes please
The World I Know - "So I walk upon high and I step to the edge and see my world below and I laugh at myself as the tears roll down" - this makes me cry every time I hear it because David's right, it does sum up the whole AI experience for him and it's how I see him, it's such a beautiful lyric.
There's also a note he holds on the group song on Idol Gives Back Shout to the Lord and he holds it so long that Carly is about 4 or 5 words into her part before he stops
But my complete and utter favourite
Baba O Reilly I can feel his voice on the slow section at the beginning right down to my womb, his tone is so rich and deep especially on "Don't cry, don't raise your eyes". OMG, I can have an orgasm just listening to that song (did I just say that out loud?

Here are mine, that I can remember!
In no order of course!
1. "Innocent"- every high note that he hits.
2. "Makeover"- when he sings "her broken legs won't let her walk away". he sounds so real about it.
3. "Little Sparrow"- whe he sings "I am not a little sparrow, I am just a broken dream".
4. The ENTIRE Jay Leno performance when he sang TOML. I loved how he altered some of the notes.
5. "Baba O'Riley"- I have the performance on my iPod and I melt the second he sings the "teenage wasteland" lines.
6. ALL of "The Music of the Night" (both live and studio).
7. When he sang "Hero" with Archie
8. "Shout to the Lord" on Idol Gives Back. He did SO well on that song. Even though it was a group performance, he managed to shine. He was amazing with his voice and I cried hearing it.

Gosh, there's loads... but heres a few that stand out from AI.
Billie Jean, studio version - the anguished cry of 'she called me to her room'
Hello, when he first hooked me in with the snarled 'I looooooove you' and then finished me off with the almost vicious and threatening '...or is someone loving you...'
Little Sparrow - studio version, the divine and unbeatable ending, how on earth can a man sing that song and sell it so beautifully.
I don't want to miss a thing - live version 'Yeah, Yeah, Yeah' just kills me for some reason
And I'll stop now as I have to pick up my skirts and run off to youtube

Alli - I've noticed the way he sings 'you' as well, love it!

More:
Innocent: "Ooone daa
aaaayyyy, you'll have to let it go..."
The Truth: "...i would have it any ooootheeeer waaaay."
Stitches: "Iiiiiiiiiiii found what....and Iiiiiiiiiiiiii fell aground..."
Better Never than Late: "...pick up the phone." (something about how he says phone gives me a funny feeling in my stomach).
Baba O'Reilly: "...it's only teeeeenaaaage wasteland..."
and I have to agree with the following:

For me, I relish every song David has sung, but here are some note-worthy notes that I dig lots:
Innocent: The way he stretched "one daaaay~"
Music Of The Night: When he emphasized on the word "night~~~".
Always Be My Baby: "But inevitabbbbblllllly" and "Ooooh! Baby believe me it's only a matter of time" and "you will always be". He pulled these lines like a rocker with powerhouse-vocals.

This is a great question!! I have alot of favorites but the ones that really stand out in my mind are:
1) "Hello".. "Or Is Someone Loving You." Just the way he says it makes me feel all tingly inside.. and THAT is the sign of an amazing vocal artist!!
2) "Always Be My Baby"... "Now you wanna be freee... yeah." Cold Chills.. it's brilliant.. perfection.. he made me cry.. it was that amazing!!
3) "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".. the end where he sings, "Your Facee... your face.. your face.." AWESOME!!
4) "Billie Jean".. "Be careful what you do before the lie becomes the truth " .. just love his delivery of that line.. also, the "Iiiiiiii" at the end.. DAMN!!!!
5) "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing".. "I Just want to hold you close." I tingled.. all over.. again!!!!

wow there are so many I can think of but I will only post a couple...
1) the studio version of Always be my baby when at the end he says softly "always be my baabbyy" that kills me every time
2) when I listen to Eleanor Rigby just the way he says "Eleanor Rigby" in the beginning with a kind of growl in his voice, I love that.
3) in the studio version of hungry like the wolf when it gets to the part where in the background he says "hungry like the wolf" the way he says that *THUD*
4) when he sings Don't wanna miss a thing (studio) when at the end he says "Don't wanna close my eyes" just the way that is said..OMG
Those are just a few of mine. I could go on for days lol so I better stop now.

A couple more --
during the audition Living on a Prayer "baby it's OK, someday"
on I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For the very end where he does what Randy called the scoop up note on "looking foooooooo-oooooooooor"
On the Walmart Concert Time of My Life -- the little up and down on the "time of my lii-iii-iii-iii-iiiife"
The end of "All I Really Need is You" -- what a sweet note...
On Porcelain, I really like the phrase "the cracks in your smile make it impossible to decipher something legible"

I want to add more..lets see:
the studio version of Billie Jean when he says "She called me to her ROOOMMMM!!" loved it
in the truth when he sings "Any other WAAAYYYYY" and how he holds that long note it is like wow
at the very end of Innocent when he says "we are we are all innocent" and the way he draws out the word innocent as long as possible!!

Oh jeez. I'm gonna have to listen to all of these...
1. The bridge of "Me" right before "Shh be quiet there's no sound." It kills me every time.
2. "This is the moment where I tell you that I'm falling apart" from Better Never than Late.
3. "No touch to calm my hating(/head and) everyone around" and "I hit the ground" from The Truth.
4. "I LOVE YOU" from Hello.
5. When it builds at the end of Incarcerate.
6. "So go on and rest your head, 'fore you lose it again." At the beginning of Fall Back Into Me.
6. Any part of Makeover.
7. "This white line" in Let Go. I just love the way he says it.
8. "Bleeding, forming scars in vain." and "Keep finding pieces of myself in yesterday" from Clean Break.
9. "But its ok to say, that you don't feel that way." from Thought You Knew, on the second verse.
10. All of Pecking Order. Just the whole, freaking song is made of amazing.
11. "You were my everything in all, but now my everywhere but hear" and "this will only end in tears" on the first chorus of Better Never than Late.
12. "She took me half the way there" from Day Tripper. The fact that he's singing about something relatively dirty is awesome, in itself.
And a LOT more. lol.

I though of some more too -
1. Always be my baby - In the studio version where he trump's out BABY BELIEVE ME IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME.
2. Billie Jean - Everytime he sings The kid is not my son.
3. Don't wanna miss a thing - In the studio version when he sings When I kiss your eyes and thank God we're together, with so much emotion that tears starts welting up in my eyes.
4. Eleonor Rigby - The beginning of every single verse is so sexy it should be illegal.
Omg, I'm just getting goosebumps from playing all this moments through my mind.

No limit ('cos it's hard to pick just one

)
Oh, I agree about Billie Jean!!!
"Not my soooooooooonnnnnn, yeah!!! (just love the ending of that song!!)

Great thread! God, there are so many moments, but I love stuff like:
The acoustic/live version of the Truth...I love when he gets to the end of the song and he softly sings..."any other waaay."
For AI stuff, there are so many moments...I really dug his version of "All Right Now".
Of course..."Hello", especially the end where he does, "is it me you're looking for?" I love the way he kinda drowned out the "for".
Little Sparrow was just amazing all the way through. His falsetto is beautiful.
Music of the Night...the highlight was the note he hit on "be". AWESOME. I was thrilled when David picked this song to sing.

Always be my baby- what DON'T l like about this? LOL.
First time Ever I saw your face- Loved this performance period, but especially, "I thought the suuuuuun, rose in your eyes" was great and of course the build up w/ "your face" at the end. The last note ROCKED.
I freakin loved Eleanor Rigby/Daytripper. I just love when he can really use the "rock" side of his voice. Don't get me wrong...I luuuuuuuuuuuuuuurve when he sings ballads, etc., but I really appreciate a good "rock" voice. He's got one of the best.
Billy Jean...OMG. What didn't I love about this one? Holy crappers...just amazing.
The World I know...."love is gaaatheriiiIIIIIIIiiing."
Oh man, the list just goes on. There are just TOO many songs to list here(including Analog Heart/Axium stuff). All of his live performances lately are great, because although he's singing songs that we're all familiar with, he still finds a way to change it up a bit and make it a bit newer/fresher. I recently watched the 'Living on a Prayer' that he did live at a benefit, and he really put feeling into it and sang it with a sincerity that is greatly lacking in today's music. That's why I love listening to David.

I agree with every one of the posted vocal bits...but one that really gets to me is: in every performance of "Hello", he gets all rough when he sings "or is someone lovin you". OMG!

I'm glad this got bumped back up. I missed it the first go round.
I liked All Right Now the first few words of the first and second lines... "There she stood...." "and I said, Hey..." It's in the low end of his voice, I really like the tone of it.
Hello had all kinds of good stuff. The big (and unexpected) I LOVE YOUUUUUU!!! and I liked the ending too.
Billie Jean is hard to beat. The show performance ending with that looooong high note was spectacular!! I had never heard Cornell's version before. I liked it much better slower than the original version .... and then came the studio version with the build up of ..."it happened much to soon...she called me to her rooooooom" that was good too.
and then he does it LIVE...OMG this song is just sex on a music note.

My favorite live version is from 7/29 in Pittsburgh the whole video is good but get the fan blasting from about 2:40 through 3:40.

The way he sings called me to her room and then wails "Billie Jean" in a higher way than normal. WooHoo. (this is off topic but at the end of the guitar solo David starts stumming his guitar so fast OMG talk about a major thud moment. STOP !! YOU'RE DRIVING ME CRAZY !!!

) Whew that's a good song. haha
The finale version of TOML. "Now I'm comin alive 'body' and soul, feeling my world start to 'tehrrrnnn'

His long notes in Axium cannot be beat. Callout, Incarcerate, On the Floor, Clean Break. If I were forced to choose an AI moment, I would have to go with FTEISYF for first then Billy Jean for second.
I LOVE his long notes in Axium too! Very underrated.

Me too -- I enjoyed re-reading everyone's comments. Now I can't wait to see what little bits we're going to add to this list when the new album comes out!
